I've seen something similar with a person about to get hit by a car on a bike and when you are too far away to do anything about it you are just frozen watching hoping they make it. That's what was happening with the announcers.

I remember Julian Wilson crying in an interview soon afterwards and explaining that he actually tried to get TO Mick Fanning to help him, just he with his surfboard, because he thought that Mick will actually die now and he is the only one that has any chance to get there fast enough! I never heard anyone talking afterwards about that Julian Wilson is a Hero.

I saw that as well. I thought it was really wholesome that Julian Wilson would try and help Mick Fanning, especially since most people in that situation would probably worry about themselves first.

Much respect for Ronado or whoever owned this competition for taking a shark attack and the surfers safety so seriously! They need to be applauded!
I don't think the shark was trying to attack Mick initially. This video shouldn't be called shark attack it should probably should be called 'shark gets stuck and freaks out'. I agree with other people (and even Mick mentioned) that it probably was just being inquisitive and got stuck in his leg leash (hence the thrashing). There's no way an actual shark attack would've begun by thrashing crazily above water like that, most either leap and grab or come from underneath and pull down. If that shark wanted to eat Mick it would've and DEFINITELY would've have done it like that. We wouldn't have even known he was attacked until he was attacked and blood was in the water.

@CLOUT you're right in a way. Many species like white sharks are not really interrested in humans as good. But they can take it as a feeding opportunity and eat human. We are way from being their primary preys. But it can happen. I'm from Reunion Island and I worked on the shark issue in Reunion for 8 years. I can definitively tell you that shark not eating human is a myth. It happens very very rarely. But it does. White sharks, tiger sharks and bull sharks are opportunists. They eat what they can and sometimes they try human. I think what Mick Fanning experienced this day was a territorial charge or attack. And yes at this moment, the shark can try to taste. The situation in Reunion is very special as the rate of attacks with feeding motive is very heavy compared to the normality anywhere else. But yes, we can be their preys. They are apex predators and have a great adaptability. They can change their preys easily and that's how they survive for 36 million years. They capability of taking almost anything as food must not be taken away for the good sake of shark conservation. No lies. A predator is a predator.

I believe the only thing that stops them from doing it immediately is them trying to figure out what we are, we are rare to them. Hence, why they circle us so much. The minute they figure it out, and figure out how to attack us, they will without hesitation, and I LOVE Great Whites. But, I’ll never stand here and say we aren’t on their menu.

5 years later and still watching this... unbelieveble
I love the moment he's holding his cut leash and just staring at it in disbelief. HOLY FUUUUUUUUUCK!!
THIS IS NOT AN ATTACK... Let me start by saying that I'm happy Mick was Safe...thats the important part! That being said, as a surfer here in San Diego, I hope that we can educate the media and the rest of the world on the difference of an "Attack" and an "Encounter". It appears that this shark was snooping around, got caught in his leash and did what anyone would do...thrashed around to get free. If it had been an attack, the shark would have come up from behind or below with mouth wide open, teeth showing and hit Mick. Im not discounting how frightening this was...i just hope that people recognized that there is a big difference in an attack and an encounter.

Often an attack begins with a 'friendly' nudge, esp if the shark isnt used to humans.
@RennersPT-C

rahowhero the shark also circled back around. Mick put the surfboard in between himself and the shark too which is a spot on move. Unless you watched this unfold at the time, you don't get it. That wave that pops up felt like it took forever and the only thing u were preparing to see was Mick gone. So to us who watched it unfold, to the emotion of Mick and all his friends as he made his way back to camp, it was an attack.
Guy just got attacked by a shark: 'This is why we are here, right? This is why we are here. This is why this is here, right? This is exactly why this is here. Everyone is ah, we're all here. We're all cool.' WTF is he on about? 2:59

Imagine being family watching this unfold on live TV. Those fews seconds they couldn't see anything would had been the worse all you see is splashing.
I was watching this back then & his friends/crew were very emotional, as they thought there for a sec, that he was harmed. Very scary but his friends reaction was sweet. Glad he's ok!
I was so happy to see that Fanning and all the other participants came out unharmed. Kudos to our Australian brothers and god bless them all because he did.
so glad hes okay! Grew up in Melbourne FL and there are a lot of sharks around there so when i saw this my heart kind of dropped. I've seen this sort of thing happen before but you never think its gonna happen to you. Just reminds the global surf community to be aware of whats around you as best you can. Be safe guys! Remember you are a guest in their home, respect it.
The way we dont see him for a few seconds before the wave breaks...
1:27 "yeah.. that's one of the dangers of professional surfing, I guess You're Gonna Need a Bigger Boat".
He's said it himself: The shark got curious (surf boards look like seals from below), got caught in the leg rope and panicked. All it wanted was to break free of that rope and when it did, it fled immediately. Would people please stop hating on sharks? They were in the ocean millions of years before humans decided it was a fun sport to ride on waves... -.-
@ilan9588

The "surf board looks like seal" statement is actually a myth. If the shark thought it was a seal, Mick Fanning would be dead. Sharks approach seals at very high speeds in an effort to tear them apart, so that the seals can't hurt them with their claws and teeth. In this particular case, the shark saw the surf board and instinctively thought "That could be food and it's similar in size to my usual prey, so let's go check it out". That's why the shark approached so slowly, usually they bite in order to verify if that object is edible. Fanning's reaction was great, by punching the shark, he let him know that he wasn't easy prey, and the shark skedaddled.

I haven't read anything about anyone hating on sharks. The over all feeling associated with the comments has been thankfulness that Mick didn't get hurt, how scary the situation must have been, and how this is the risk of being active in their world because guess what? Like it or not, sharks are dangerous, but nobody is blaming sharks for that. They are just in the ocean doing what sharks do.

People who say that sharks should be removed from competition areas should realize 1. The sharks were there first, we randomly decided to go into the waters. 2. It's the beaches fault technically speaking since there are fences that goes around the swimming areas of beaches to prevent sharks. 3. Sharks don't really know what they're going after so they can't be considered blood thirsty.
Great work by Julian you absolute legend. Sharkie hoping for a selfie with Mick. I think he won at J-Bay 4 or 5 times in total (???) including the year before and after this. Balls of steel. Luvs the place. Even the local wildlife wanted a closer look.
The commentator excusing himself after saying “holy shit” 😂😂😂 pretty sure that would have been the most polite thing said be any of us who were watching that live
Nice reaction of the safety crew. Awesome Job!!!
"Holy shit. Excuse me." Lol. You're excused, dear commentator.
Who would ever think you get the play by play of a shark attack. hahahhaha
Commentator: you can see a little splash Mick: I’m dying

The hi-light of Shark Week 2016
There was around 35 seconds from when he first got attacked, to when he got on the back of the ski. Scariest 35 seconds of his life...
i was sitting on my board in the lineup and as the wave rose up a shadow about the size of a vw bus rose below me. it was a tiger shark. sucked the breath right out with my heart through my ears. I paddled with tiny fingers to shore. a few months ago and I've been spooked ever since.

... So, there are still shark in the oceans... That's a very good news. Better for the earth that sharks remain alive than... surfers. I'm ok with surfers, they know the risk. but each time an attack happens, many people think sharks are "bad", "bloody"... etc. That is crazy.

Good job safety crew! Fantastic planning event coordinators! Great response time!
I don't think this was a shark attack. It just seemed like an awkward encounter between Mick and the shark because they both didn't know what the f*** was going on. The leg rope obviously got stuck in it's mouth and it freaked out. In reaction, Mick then freaked out. Thank God the shark didn't react by biting him though, this could've very easily been horrible footage

hi
That's pro surfer Mick Fanning, from Australia. In 2015, at the J-Bay open in South Africa. It was a great white around 12'-14' I believe. He didn't get bit at all. And retired like 3 years later after this incident. He's been really successful he made a beer company with a few friends and then sold it for an awesome amount later.
I have a question I'm wondering can they keep a drone in the sky during this competition to look out for sharks and possibly alert before any injuries might
look like someone playing Farcry 3
Страшно представить, что испытал этот парень, находясь в воде, после нападения... Он грёб руками, понимая, что его руки и ноги под прицелом акулы... Супер, что он выбрался целым👍
I was watching this live in 2015 when this happened and I said "Holy Sh!T" as well. Crazy!!
