My late partner had brain cancer and too much color would confuse his brain and actually caused physical side effects. It's been a 2 1/2 years since he passed and Im finally changing the grey walls, grey furniture, grey ceilings to color!! My style is kind of like if Dr. Seuss and Willy Wonka had a love child so Im planning a Turquoise FOCAL wall and creating my own artwork ( painings and pottery and stained glass). Cant wait and thanks for your candid opinions. ( btw I agree with 95% of everything you stated). Ive figured out my design is BOHO I think..

My controversial design opinion is that you don't actually need cohesion across spaces - i like a single space to be cohesive, that's good, but i also have two kids who have different tastes, and when we move to our new home i will let them pick whatever dang wall paint colour they want. Our front sitting room will look a bit different to our bedroom, and different again to the kitchen. For us that won't be in an extreme way, but we have four different people living together so getting a totally cohesive house is not reasonable because we have different tastes and opinions.

Totally agree on the accent walls - not sure why they are getting so much hate all of a sudden unless it is just part of the “have to move on to some other fad” movement. 🙄 I have only used the concept sparingly in my home but I like it - it can give a focal point when there isn’t an otherwise obvious architectural feature to highlight, or it can allow you to play with color or pattern or texture without going overboard. 😊 Thanks, as always, for another fun and informative and real video!❤

I am remodeling my home, and my designer has asked me to find pictures of rooms that I like. When I show them to my mom, she says "That's boring." She loves a ton of bright color in her house, while I prefer neutrals and desaturated colors. Some designers make me feel bad how much I actually like being surrounded by greige and taupe, with just spots of color in flowers and artwork. I'm so happy to hear you say that lots of color isn't for everyone. Also, I currently have kitchen cabinets that don't go the ceiling, but I don't like them. The dust that collects up there is terrible and hard to reach. I think the cabinets that don't go to the ceiling are lovely, especially the ones with varying heights, but they're not for me. My new ones are going all the way to the ceiling primarily for ease of cleaning purposes. Also, I love accent walls.

  • @FleurDeCersier

I'm not against accent walls in general but my problem with accent walls is that they oftentimes feel like an afterthought. Like "oh I need a little bit of colour, let's do an accent wall". And then they choose a random wall in their otherwise white room and paint it a fun colour. When accent walls feel intentional and fit the space, I really like them. In fact I'm planning to do a floral wallpaper accent ceiling in my hallway and paint the walls in a colour that goes with that wallpaper.

We recently lost about a third to a half of our major furniture pieces in our 3200 sq ft home that we’ve lived in for 29 years of our 37 yr married life due to a broken sprinkler pipe flood (not nearly as serious as those who have lost everything in the Maui fires, to be sure!). Most of these pieces had been “curated” and either saved for over many years, or cherished for many years, like our teak bedroom set, so it’s been quite the grieving process to let go of them and to try to find new pieces all at once that we might love just as much. I understand where you’re coming from; a lot of people have said “oh cool, you get to pick out new stuff!” But I actually liked my old stuff and had put a lot of effort into choosing it in the first place. Guess I’m just weird that way LOL.

@@kristinapreedy7069 not weird at all. I'm still grieving. When it first happened I would talk about it and people would say things like,, "don't worry you'll replace it" and "don't worry you'll get it back." Most of it was purchased in other countries during my travels and being in my 60's I won't ever get back to those places again. If I may suggest, try not replacing everything at once... only the major and necessary pieces. Hopefully over time you'll come across other things you can love and you'll want to save room for those. Blessings

I am an interior designer and agree with you 100% 1. accent walls : you can also play with the spatial feel ( I live in Australia and we generally don’t have high ceilings and spacious rooms ). Painting only one wall in the right colour could dramatically change the perception of a room .. it’s like moving the wall front and back , same with the ceiling. Using the same treatment on all walls it’s not only an overkill but a “ one size fits all “ solution that does not work in most cases .. 2. Kitchen cabinets to the ceiling … I think many online recommendations are out of context . If space is something client needs , you utilise every square cm but if they have high ceilings and lots of storage space elsewhere, you might want to bring the space down to a human space by lowering the cabinets ( ceiling will feel lower as well)… 3. Marketplace is the best : some people don’t understand the value of the things they have , others are just in rush to sell ( moving interstate, moving house ,etc) I found amazing quality with pieces that sellers recently bought , or bought and never used in their spare room

Those 3D walls are awful! You would have to spend your day off dusting the wall! I just had my kitchen remodeled and yes, I got rid of the stupid soffit and put the cabinets all the way to the ceiling. I have a really nice step ladder that goes into a slot beside my refrigerator. That extra storage space is priceless for things I rarely use but need to hang onto for the occasional time it's needed. I don't want to purchase a punch bowl every time someone is getting married or having a baby, LOL

i think the accent wall is ok, but it has to relate to something in the room. i guess cabinets up in the sky are better than the soffits, is that not a thing any more? the empty space above is a dust and grease magnet to me. the all white, god bless those who can do that. i try to keep it toned down, in my small space color can be too much, but i can’t live without it. i get the sentiment of spark joy, but so true, in staple furniture, esp if buying new, it’s just that, nice but a backdrop and hopefully comfortable. marketplace is wonderful, they don’t want it, you do. easy. yes, entryway needs to be functional first. there isn’t a person who does not at one point change shoes there. my one big opinionated no is tv above fireplace, shudder.

  • @kristinapreedy7069

YES - this last one - I don’t have a “fireplace” per se in our great room/living room (we have a wood stove) but my pet peeve is a visible/on display television, especially in a living room, so we’ve always had ours in a cabinet where we can stow it when not in use. It’s getting harder to do that with the size of the televisions getting so large, but I keep working on ways to keep them hidden LOL. The frame TVs and/or mirrored TVs are decent alternatives if they HAVE to be above a fireplace, but luckily I don’t have to worry about that.

I’m super short, so I can’t reach beyond the second shelf of the cabinet anyway. Just put a panel across the front or something…. Anything to keep the goo from getting up there.

I agreee with you! The sudden disdain I've been seeing online for other people's homes that are neutral and have a more minimal design style has been really confusing and off-putting. They're saying they have "no personality." Not everyone can and wants to live in a maximalist home and that's okay. I have a (too many) hobbies and interests but I don't want to display them all over my tables and walls. I feel better when I live in a clean and simple environment and that's okay!

Totally agree 💯 with you on color overload, entryways, and the 3D walls, but to each his own. Some people do make it work. What I can’t get behind is designers not liking matching living room sets, but to me it looks cohesive and practical. Sometimes, these mismatched groupings in living rooms or dining rooms with mismatched seating just look sloppy, even though they are said to be “curated.” I think designers use the term “curated” to euphemistically mean “whatever.” 😂

✨💖✨Such an evil little laugh in the best possible way. KB delivers her nuggets of design wisdom in the most grownup and relatable way. It is so true that comfort and functionality have to come first. When my husband and I bought our 1st couch (in the 80s, ahem) it was all Scandinavian and teak and sleek. We were both young and fit, and we didn’t need much padding for our old bones. Pregnancy and age can and will change your perspective. (I can’t believe what we could sell that torture device for now.) When we bought our next couch, we took turns sprawling out on it, sitting together, sitting by ourselves-yes, right there in the store. We brought our 4 year old son back and all snuggled up. We had the sales rep open the pull out bed, and we sprawled out on that too. It was the most comfortable couch and served us for many years. Comfort and function, baby. It needs to be a movement with tee shirts and everything. 😂"If your your pillow is speaking to you, your house is haunted."😂.

I like accent walls but I'm not a fan of the 3 D walls also. I keep my walls relatively neutral. The ONE THING that I can't stand is a lot of stuff on your kitchen counters. It makes me fidget. During the Holidays, I do put a few groupings out and I will put them away the first week of Jan. I keep a 4 cup coffee pot on, a drying mat, a small lamp in the corner on a timer, paper towel holder -that's it, because that's what I use daily.

All white everything is anxiety inducing bc the level of cleaning that you have to do to maintain it. Also bright. That picture you gave as an example seems incredibly bright. Maybe this could work in a room that doesn't get a lot of light, but darker white and natural/muted color should be added if you get a lot of light.

In the early 60’s I lived in a small town in NM, I was driving down main street one day and saw a truck being unloaded at a furniture store that sold both new and used furniture. I noticed that there was an iron bed, so I pulled over, went and talked to the owner to find out how much he’d take for that full sized bed, he told me I could have it for $14.50. So I put it in lay away as a gift for my Mom. When I finally got it out of lay away my Mom and I spent countless hours scraping the many layers of paint off of it. When she was ready to paint it, she painted it white with gold embellishments, which is exactly how I thought she’d paint it. It would not have been my choice but it belonged to her and she did make the bedroom with the iron bed look lovely. As I type this, I’m sitting up in my antique full sized iron bed which is now painted a bronze (y) color, and I’m trying to figure out how I can take it with me when I go, because no one else would love it like my Mom did and like how I now love it. 😊

Before I even watch the rest of the video, I have to say that I absolutely love accent walls! I have a charcoal gray accent wall behind my TV in the living room. It helps the color to pop. I took my BM Pale Oak dining room and painted one wall burgundy. Awesome! And I have an ocean blue accent wall in my bedroom which is extremely relaxing but not overwhelming. I love accent walls and will probably have at least one somewhere forever!

In our old house, we hung the top cupboards at normal height above the lower ones and just got taller uppers. I put seasonal dishes and little used cookware/bakeware up on the top shelves. I really, really miss my to the ceiling cabinets in the new house. I had to get a shelf unit to put in the spare bedroom for all the stuff I used to be able to keep in the kitchen. I'm hoping we can save up enough soon to redo the kitchen with new cupboards. Oh! And we keep our 2-step stepladder next to the fridge. I use it every day as I'm under 5' tall and need it to even reach the middle of the 2nd shelf.

If I have been paying attention to you since I found you on KZread, if I were to hire a designer of your caliber, pretty sure we would have a discussion about my style or how I see the space design. We have one accent wall in the lower lever of our home, done in a deep terracotta the rest of the space is a light cream and we love it. So, yeah, personal style. Just like the art you talked about. Individuality!!! 🌹

When I remodel my 1970s kitchen (soon, I hope...but I updated appliances and countertops when I moved in 13 years ago but kept original cabinetry, flooring, and layout) I will put cabinets to the ceiling....even though I have no intention of using that space for storage. I don't need it (and my ceilings are only 8ft), but I assume future owners might want that extra storage space to store rarely used items. I think it's better to make efficient use of ALL the kitchen space than to have the wasted space above and have to clean the dust. I would never increase the space between lower cabinets and counter because I don't want to have to stretch to reach my coffee supplies in the morning. LOL!

  • @colbyreader

I like accent walls. Even wood, it might be old but if you have a well lit room it can be so comforting. If you’re a KZreadr then having the 3D walls could be nice. I think hexagons is the best pattern. I like tall cupboards for holding memories and keepsakes. It’s hard to find tote storage when you have kids and those tall cupboards can be perfect. Color is up to you. If you want your living space to be welcoming then less color is better but if you don’t have people over then make it a space that brings joy. Office spaces should be minimalist but decorated in your personal colors. I have figure drawings and minimalist art of women, women of many ethnicities and cultures in my space because it’s interesting and speaks softness. People love looking at it and feel peaceful. I don’t use Facebook but I have a few friends who send me things to look at and I have to agree. It’s great. I agree with the entryway lol. That was so interesting to think about and hear your thoughts on. I think it’s good to think about what we’re putting into our spaces and why.

Love the list! My controversial opinion is it is ok to make changes to your house that aren't good for resale value. It is your house and you are living in it. It needs to make you happy. If you are planning on moving then yes keep that in mind but if not make the changes that make you happy. I have bold green cabinets, very aysemetrical library shelves, an "adult" themed bathroom. Are these choices going to work for the masses no, but I laugh every time I wash my hands using my penis faucet and flower basin sink so the changes work for my family.

I HATE the idea that you should consider the resale value when you make design choices. When I get a house, I'm going to live in it until I die. I refuse to have any landlord white walls! My house is going to be clearly MINE and I don't care if that hurts the resale value. It will make me happy for decades.

It took me a long time to embrace this idea. Building a house now and got what I wanted. When I sold my house, the person paid my price and I changed nothing. Don’t worry too much about resale.

100% on the entryway opinion. I do my best to keep the practical things orderly, but I’m not going to pretend I don’t live in my own house and make the living part (my life!) difficult. Hall tree, shoe bench, cute chairs beside a cute hutch… whatever. Rolling top desk for mail? There are ways to style that practicality up or down. But at the end of the day my house doesn’t have a coat closet for some reason, but I still have traffic going in and out and people who need a place to put their stuff so that it doesn’t spill into the rest of the house, just like you said.

  • @BB-re8mw
    @BB-re8mw10 ай бұрын

Thank you for the entryway comment...it needs to be functional and clean and not tacky or outdated. BUT if one is budget limited they should focus on the main room or rooms of the home first and get them right. Upgrade the kitchen and bath(s) also but don't necessarily 'decorate' them until the rooms where you and your visitors spend the most time...and yes sometimes that is the kitchen...then go for it! For me my front entry is a 3.5x10 ft galley with no windows and literally just a pass through and a buffer to the interior share hallways of a mcm highrise condo. It is not visible from any of the living areas...so it has a mirror at the end and that's it. The shoes, purse with keys, and outerwear go in the closet at the end of the hall. The 5x10 entry space as you enter the kitchen/LR area has the large impactful artwork. That's it.

OMG, THANK YOU! I am/was one of those people who, if the item does not illicit some kind of glorious feeling within me, I am very hesitant to buy it. This is why I hardly have anything lol. I will be shopping for new furniture for my new home in a couple of months and will stop waiting for some kind of sign from Heaven that a certain couch or vase is the one I will fall in love and grow old with. I believe it's partly anxiety based, but I promise to get better with it lol.

You can put the tv above the fireplace. Use a traditional style rug in any room with any other style of decor. Skip the coffee table & use side tables instead. If you can find decor second hand it’s better than brand new 99% of the time. Your dishes don’t all have to be from the same exact matching set. Sometimes a nearly empty room looks better than just trying to fill it with boring decor. Just a few of my unpopular design opinions.

Ok, very inspiring video! And I totally agree that everyone has a taste and problems with different things. BUT I only want to share one of my unpopular opinions: If your house is 99% white (or any other color tbf but white angers me most) do NOT invite me in. White to me speaks of absence, hospitals, sensory-deprivation and the smell of bleach hitting your nose 5:00 in the morning. Of ALONE. White accents - yes, a white wall or two that's completely blank - I'm used to that, in our bedroom 3 out 4 walls and the ceiling are white with nothing on them. But if EVERYTHING is white I'd legit just turn and walk out. In general - everything has to be balanced I think - 2-3 colors playing around, yes to accent wall, I absolutely agree with the vase point;... but ye. no white box for me pls.

On the flip side of your cabinet opinion, I happen to LOVE cabinets that don't go to the ceiling for 2 reasons.....you can reach everything in them and you can decorate above them. While were in the kitchen my controversial opinion is I HATE kitchen islands. Lastly, another controversial opinion I hold is curtains should not necessarily go floor to ceiling and dress the wall rather than function at the window(that little bit of wall space above the window between the panels KILLS me!.....I get the idea, make space look bigger/taller, yaddi yaddi........but I accept my space as it is, I just need it to be pretty and functional

Im a fan of yours and I use to work at a vintage store.Facebook marketplace Sometimes people don’t know what they sell but sometimes people don’t know what they buy. The vintage store won’t carry replicas or cheap made stuff And also a vintage store won’t lie to you just to get rid of something cause their business rely on reputation..A person that sells on FB marketplace has nothing to lose if they lie about the piece the are selling they are not bound to any type of guarantee…. On the other hand you recommend to take advantage of people who don’t have the knowledge of their possessions for your own benefit..that’s low And I’m sure you would not like someone doing that to you. I prefer to let them know the value of their stuff and ask for a better deal ..thank you for all your beautiful advice (besides the one I just mentioned of course).. Good luck
