Shaping & Glassing EPS Asymmetrical "Fish" Surfboard // Start to Finish

This time I'm going for it! Follow along while I shape an asymmetrical surfboard. I already knew I had a lot to work on but after watching Zack Flores's videos - I feel like I have A LOT to work on. I'm still having a blast shaping and learning! The dimensions are 5'4 (stringer)/5'6 (tail) x 21 x 2 3/8

I always install leash plug after first hot/sanding coat is laid. I also wait until a sanding coat is laid to sand off tape on fin boxes. I've had a lot more success and cleaner glass jobs this way and it was the way I was taught. Steps as follows (normal clear board or foam stain with boxes installed): 1. Laminate bottom 2. Sand edges on top 3. Laminate top 4. Sand edges on bottom 5. Sanding coat bottom and top 6. Install leash plug 7. 120 grit the whole thing with a hard pad (plug, laps, fins, everything) 8. Hot coat 9. 320, 400, 600 grit and done! Hope this helps. There's always 99 ways to skin a cat but hearing other people's methods always helped me! Board is super sick!!!!

I always wondered how some people get such a clean finish! This must be how. Is the process the same for epoxy or poly resin? Does this add a lot more weight from the double layer? I will probably try this at some point with poly resin (due to how expensive epoxy resin is) for a pu board. Thanks for sharing your process! Going to screen shot it and hope to try it for one of my next boards.

That looks wild! Love the colours! Will you give an update of how it rides? Are you using a template for fin placement based on tail width/shape, and how did you decide on tail placement/where the two shapes meet vs "midline" ?

Yeah! I love the way the colors turned out! I was a bit worried in the beginning. I am experimenting with a lot of these concepts. I used two templates for the tail and cut it straight to where both of them naturally blend without cutting the actual outline of the tails (if that makes sense). The fins I am experimenting by putting a thruster set up on the non-fish side and put the fish side one inch forward as if it would be for a quad set up (minus the back fin for a quad) Not sure how that will ride, but I’m super stoked to try it out. I will hopefully have an update video on how it rides. I live almost 2 hours from the coast so, it might not be until after the holidays!

Quick update: first time out was about 3ft and not too powerful. Easy to get into waves and loose on the backside (as expected)! It’s not as skatey as previous fishes, of the same size, I’ve ridden (which is what I was going for). I found the real skatey fishes were hard for me to control on overhead days (out of my skill range).

4:51 That’s a sick looking assy! A few questions, please…. 1) Is that acrylic paint? 2) When you squeegee the paint from the center to the rails, do you clean off the squeegee after each pass? 3) Who is your source for the carbon tape? Thanks!🤙🏼🏄🏻‍♂️

Thank you 🙏🏽 Yes, that is acrylic paint that I’m using. Initially I cleaned off the squeegee after each pass, but after a while I realized I only have to clean it off after every few passes. If you want a really clean look you probably should clean it off after each pass. The carbon fiber roll (actually wasn’t a tape) I got from shapersupppy.com Are you planning to shape a board soon???

@@paulzeye_surfboards Thanks for replying. The suppliers here call it “tape” (even though it’s not sticky) but they don’t carry one that lols like that. Yes, I’ve been making my own boards off and on for decades so kinda cooking up a new one in my head right now.

@@joeblow1942 that makes sense. Are you in Aussieland? Just bc I know there are carbon tapes that are sticky. It’s crazy how many steps are involved with making your own board. Have you landed on which shape you’re choosing for this one?

@@paulzeye_surfboards Encinitas, which is in Southern California. Shapers always has super cool stuff that isn’t available in the States. I’m thinking an assy this time. Been wanting to make one for a long time. The way you did the color on yours with the dots of paint is a technique that I’ve never seen before. It has given me some ideas. Thanks. I had a board once where the guy applied blobs of paint randomly and then sprayed it with an air nozzle to make the paint spread out. Looked really nice.

@@joeblow1942 yooo I’m in Portland so you should be able to get it from shaper supply! I got that paint inspiration from watching this lady that does squeegee acrylic art. I figured I’d give it a go and it turned out great! I’d like to see how yours turns out when you’re done!
