Shanghai's top 10 anomalies: Rent-free office space; no one talks about traveling abroad...

#Chinainsights#Chinanews
Shanghai, known as China's No. 1 city in terms of economy, accounts for about 4% of the national GDP. Whether measured by the size of the city, GDP per capita, the share of the city's products in the domestic or international market, the scale of the utilization of foreign capital, or the city's popularity, influence, and innovation, it can be said it’s the No. 1 city in China. It is known by the Chinese as the "Magic City", that is, a city with a touch of magic. Now, how is the Shanghai economy doing? It’s showing a magical facade too. The views of the government and the public are completely polarized.
First, let's look at what the government is telling the world about Shanghai.

The last time i was here which was only a few months gap i noticed at least 15 businesses in the immediate vicinity of where i live had shuttered up. No sign of anything new in the months since. All that being said the Shanghai economy is still a goliath and it still has many things going for it not least of all its massive population. It can weather the storm but the boat will take a few hits.

You can get an idea by just modeling out conservative numbers: Foreign workers averaged at least $50K in spending. So, lowball number would be &5B per / 100K. That’s equivalent to 1/2 GDP point for Shanghai. Foreigners leaving on the low end is 1-2 GDP hit. Probably 4-5 point hit on the high end. Foreign tourism is lower. Companies have shifted to Singapore. Not even going to include real estate valuations, but the service / selling side. That’s way down. All these things add up to do real damage.

OMG, the econonmy is certainly not as good as before. Isn't that the same in the rest of the world? Post covid recovery, whatnot, we can certainly not just print money and hope for immediate recovery. However, i have heard that people are lining up to pay off their 30 year mortage in advance. Many people are spending more money on traveling since old Chinese tend to be savers instead of spenders. You could totally checkout bloggers who show tourist attractions in China and the major railway stations to see where people are. What can you do if you don't have time to spend in the future like in case of the Covid where people lose their entire family. It's only logical that people are in this kind of mindset. I've lived in Canada and China for many years. Just want to provide a second opinion for people before they judge.

He acts like this is just CCP blunder. The same property bubble hit the US w/ similar results in 2008. It took GIANT, prolonged stimulus & bailouts to steer clear of Scylla. PRC should do that & make meaningful concessions to win US back. It's a must given bind they're in.
