Shanghai's Street Food Scene
As profiled in "The Streets of Heavenly Dumplings," in the June issue of Condé Nast Traveler, when Jean-Georges Vongerichten craves something local and delicious in Shanghai, he heads for the vendors in the French Concession. Here, some scenes from the street show by Andrew Rowat for Condé Nast Traveler

I love it! There's so much care and attention to detail that's involved in cooking. It's fast food done right. The cooking style is like a well oiled machine it great to see how mankind can create new things and work together. Thanks for sharing!
This is so cool, I'd love to have my own travel show so I could witness this kind of thing everyday!

In my humble opinion, all the foods are cooked in extreme high temperatures, thus that man wears gloves, so it cancels out the germs , I know it's not the most sanitary looking place, but I would have my breakfast there while watching most amazing cooking skills right in front of me.

And have you seen him cleaning or changing the gloves? This is just the same basic batter that makes a crepe in France or a dosa in India or an identical pancake type dish all over the world. There wasn't even a filling to this one.

I just came back from Shanghai, this kind of view is not EXIST at all nowadays. The city developed quickly and the vision of ancient history and culture is indeed fading now in Shanghai. Nevertheless the Chinesefood culture is deeply rooted and profound in this world that we have to admit and respect. Streetfood is also a culture in ancient time in China, it represents people's wisdom and they way they enjoy their life. Over all i like China, i'm glad to see China's development and I really enjoy this video.
@psteinswy2864
8 жыл бұрын
+Charon Steven It's a pity that you have missed these views. As a Shanghainese, I'm sure that these vendors are still doing their business every morning near the underground stations, residential areas, universities and other areas for locals which are not likely to be your destination.
Cool thanks for uploading!
It is mindblowing to see what Shanghai looked like ten years ago. Today it is one of the, if not the, most advanced and modern metropolises in the world, jam packed with people, cars and skyscrapers. Look at that development O.O
@andrewrowat

It was back in 2010 as well - there were just pockets that were undeveloped at the time in different parts of the city. This particular area was adjacent to a high-traffic tourist site (Yu Gardens).

Roger Allagan damn right! people all crazy, think they can get aids from street food! and then they buy something in supermarket which price is 97% packaging and only 3% actual food... and it sucks!
@notmyname5439
9 жыл бұрын
Stefano Morandi yeah compared to a lot in the supermarkets these days this street food is way fresher and healthier. I just get a lot of bulk ingredients like rice and beans for example and do things with it from there, best you can do. I don't eat too much prepackaged stuff unless it came straight from the store kitchen and I'm lazy that day. I'm actually jealous of places that have all this cheap but good food prepared for you at some stand on the street.
@Retsgetiton

Not Myname sometimes street food isn't the cleanest exactly. go research 'gutter oil' and you'll find that it's preeeetty disgusting and unhealthy. not saying all street food is but making your own food is way healthier.
@notmyname5439

yeah I heard about that gutter oil issue too. I make my own food for the most part, once you get down the basics and how to keep things then cooking for yourself is easy and affordable. Don't gotta be some 5 star chef to eat well.
