Shamu Show Incident Nov. 15 2006

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

On Nov 15, 2006 one of the killer whales in the Shamu Show at Sea World in San Diego took one of the trainers on an unplanned "ride" under water. This happened two weeks before the more highly publicized accident that happened on Nov. 29, 2006. Watch the trainer who dives off of a whale to the right of the screen.
****Lots of people have stated in the comments that they didn't see what happened. First...when this actually happened, I didn't even realize I captured it on video--I wasn't zoomed in on any specific whale or person until I realized something was wrong. If you watch the trainer who dives in the water at the beginning, as he gets part way across the pool a whale comes up behind him and they both disappear under the water. And, if you watch the trainers on the stage, you'll notice they go into a panic/rescue mode. Yeah, it isn't the best video quality and doesn't show a lot of details due to the low resolution when I uploaded it.

This happened to the best trainer at a show and he was a diver too so he knew about breathing techniques. The whale would bring him up and instead of panicking he just calmly pet it while doing his breathing. Then it would take him back to the bottom. This happened like 4 times. He finally got loose and swam to the stage and got up to run as far away from the water as possible but his feet were so mangled, he couldn't stand and kept falling. But due to his diving skills, he survived it.

Exactly 25 second, from 0:15 - 0:40 he was underwater For the average person untrained in diving, you can drown in that time if you panic, 40 seconds is pushing the limits if you don't. A trained diver in shape can do 60-90 seconds if they don't panic.

They arent killers like that! In the wild, they NEVER attack humans! They swim right up next to people, but they never hurt anyone. These animals are attacking because they are psychologically unstable due to being taken out of nature and put into these small environments and forced to do tricks for food! Mentally, they break, and it only happens in captivity! It should be completely outlawed to take these animals out of the wild!

One of the orcas involved is Orkid, Seaworld's most intelligent orca. She was born in 1988 in Seaworld San Diego. Orkid is a Northern Resident, North Atlantic Type 1 hybrid. Her father, Orky, was Canadian, and her mother, Kandu V, was from Iceland. Orkid lost her mother in a tragic accident when she was only 11 months old. She was raised by Corky (Northern Resident) and Kasatka (Icelandic). Orkid has lost her father, mother, and best friends Splash, Sumar and Nakai. The trainers gave her the nickname 'rocket scientist.' She was involved in several incidents.

Swims towards stage. 0:13 Just before making it to stage, he gets dragged down into water by orca. Remains under water for a long while. Other trainers start calling and distracting orcas. 0:40 Dragged down trainer finally pops on left side of screen while orcas are still being distracted. He gets signaled and helped out of the water as he limps out of the stage. Conclusion: None of this would happen if orcas were not kept captive or trained like circus animals. #FreeTheOrcas

I was actually there on 9/11. Parking lot was massive and honestly didn't think it would be easy to find the beige rental car among the sea of other beige rental cars when leaving. Whole park got shut down for the rest of the day after the attacks and leaving was scary. We had been in some indoor acrobatics show when the rest of the park had emptied out, so there were only a few visible employees and no other members of the public in the park when we got told to make our way out. There were only about 20-30 cars left in the whole lot. Massive amount of empty space that, in hindsight, makes you realise how much space they actually had when creating the place and how much more they should have given to the animals.

I nearly drowned once, the adrenaline and your instinct kicks in. You stop sensing pain, you don't even think about breathing, you don't consider the water in your mouth and eyes, you have no concept of time, your entire thought process becomes linear and the only thought is the method needed to get you above the surface. Literally nothing else crosses your mind, it's completely out of your hands. I didn't experience it myself, but I can only assume the whole "life flashing before your eyes" comes after many, many failed attempts at getting to safety, when your subconscious mind starts to think you may not make it.

That’s the reason you must respect wild animals. They are extremely dangerous and unpredictable. Like my late Grandmother use to say. That wildness in them helps them survive in the wild. This is in a sense a domesticated venue and even though people hold wild animals in captivity for their own personal entertainment expect scenarios like this to play out every so often including lives being lost.

Anita Marie well said, Anita! Nonchalant is exactly the word that came to mind for me too when I saw the trainer limping offstage. This man is lucky to be alive! The orca held him underwater for sometime and the attack on Dawn Brancheau just 4 years later she didn't get to limp away. Also incredible that the man who is slapping the water here is Ken Peters, who himself is extremely lucky to be alive after being attacked by Kasatka! These whales are indeed not meant to continuously perform circus tricks in a tiny fishbowl. But they are big cash cows, so according to Sea World, the show must go on!

Yes! There many aquariums/sea parks that are thriving that do not have any captive orcas, dolphins or any other cetaceans. I'm holding hope that people will stop buying tickets to Sea World and force them to end their cetacean captivity! I just saw Sea World has a new tv commercial loaded with propaganda -- big sign of desperation. But hopefully people will educate themselves and see through it.

I find myself asking "why would I believe a paid SW trainer over two highly educated scientists like Dr. Visser and Dr. Naomi Rose who both agree that captivity is harmful. So what if you "love" the whales! If you did love them, you would do what's in THEIR best interest, not yours. That's what love is. Love does not equal captivity!

Thank goodness people are waking up. I'm hearing that people are leaving lots of comments on the SeaWorld commercial video on KZread and surprise, surprise....SeaWorld is deleting all the "negative" (read: truthful) comments and they're keeping only the postive comments that I'm sure 95% of which are written by Sea World PR staff or other employees.

@@johndoe-zi4ee You severely underestimate Orcas. They are easily one of the most intelligent species on the planet behind Humans, along with basically Elephants and a handful of others. Wild ones catch their prey and throw it back into the sea to catch it again for fun like a house cat does with a mouse. A group of only 2 Orcas can easily kill a Blue Whale, and they have been observed to do this and then only eat the tongue as it's their preferred part. A formerly captive Orca would have absolutely no trouble finding food. Their struggles in the open water would likely be more of a social nature (ie finding other Orcas, successfully coexisting with them without conflict, and breeding) as they have grown up in cramped conditions and without any normal kind of interaction with other Orcas. This is the equaivalent of a human being imprisoned in an area of around 20 square metres, never allowed outside and spending many long periods of time in solitary confinement.

Some might be too integrated to humans that they’ll stick around. They can still hunt and such. But finding a pod is a whole different story however still possible. Look up Luna the Orca, he was in captivity until they released him and he stuck around humans I believe because he couldn’t find a pod but did eventually die from a boat the poor thing. And then there was Springer (I believe was her name?) and she did manage to find a pod I think.
