Seaworld Killer Whale Show Goes Wrong

One Ocean killer whale show from 29th March 2018 which went slightly wrong during the 'Side by Side' section of the show when the whales starting fighting instead of performing as planned. As explained by the staff, the fight was a rise against the dominant whale, however, she fought back and fundamentally laid a bite on the tail on the other whale before the staff managed to intervene.
This small show of aggression from the whales just goes to show how powerful these amazing animals are!

Right? I'm honestly surprised that people are still into these kinds of shows. I saw another video on another channel where the comments were full of people expressing their enjoyment for such shows. I know they maybe don't know better. But it's worrying.

What you witness in the video-and countless others on KZread-is that killer whales behave largely _voluntarily._ If the killer whales decide to do something other than what their trainer asks, they do it. Shows are often interrupted (though not usually in such a dramatic fashion). Conflict happens in all social animals; intraspecific aggression is healthy and expected. We see it all the time in every killer whale population. Their societies are not democratic; the matriarchs keep everyone in line. In the wild, they have to do that or they won’t survive. At SeaWorld, they are free from the imperative of hunting for survival. All their food is provided _whether they respond positively to the trainers or not._ They are still social in captivity, though, and that structure allows them to learn behaviors from themselves and humans.

  • @darkprose

The other important point is that killer whales at SeaWorld are given a variety of stimulation and enrichment; they learn new behaviors often; these behaviors are often physically and cognitively challenging; they have unstructured time to rest, play and interact with each other and the trainers. Boredom itself is hardly harmful, and they undoubtedly experience that, too, in the wild, but great care is taken to give these animals a rich and healthy life. They are remarkably well-cared for; _Blackfish_ has lied to you.

It’s so sad to see such beautiful, intelligent, and majestic animals being kept in 50 feet deep pool and approximately 100-200 feet wide. When in the the wild they, can dive up to 1000 feet and swim miles upon miles(40-70miles) it’s very depressing I definitely think sea world should be shut down, or just not have orca shows as an attraction. There are places that you can go, and experts will take you to see orcas in the wild much happier then here. stop this! Edit: thx for the likes kind people

What they DONT mention is that Orca's develop behavioral problems while In captivity and can become aggressive to other animals and humans. They can also become depressed or bored and will swim around sluggishly while refusing to do their routine during a show, resulting in it becoming canceled. If this was a normal Orca family then they would rarely fight due to their social structure and social bonds, but it rarely is a normal family at Sea World. Many are complete strangers to each other despite being related while also being forced into close proximity with one another, which is why you are ACTUALLY seeing what you are seeing.

They also can decide not to take a next breath. For some of the whale groups breathing is voluntary which means that it is under their control and to keep breathing they need to decide to take a breath. It is essentially a suicide when a whale in these tanks decides not to take a next breath. It has been recorded as the cause of death in many occasions.

Tilikum, a male orca who was in seaworld orlando from the late 90's or early 2000's to 2018 was taken from the wild when he was just 2 years old and in his time at sea world, he attacked and killed 3 trainers (r.i.p dawn). but now most orcas are born at seaworld so they dont think anything of it. i am fine with that. but capturing orcas? no.

I’ve said many times how majestic it is to see Orcas in the wild, and I’ve had a few people say “why bother when you can see them in Sea World.” That comment makes me mad for two reasons. The first reason is that marine mammals do not belong in captivity, it is cruel, and the second reason is that seeing these incredible and intelligent creatures in the wild is a truly unique experience that cannot be topped. I have been blessed to see wild Orcas in Alaska and Antarctica, unique yet equally magnificent.

Actuslly these whales get play time with multiple enrichment and toys that can make them a bit more active in the day if they aren’t going to show, they get ice, jello, puzzle toys being put together for them to enjoy which most of thr time they do, the shows are basically their workout so they stay active and in shape, they get 200+ pounds of fish a day depending on age so you cant let them get unhealthy. The pools they are in aren’t actually really small, orcas dont swim too far unless starving or scaring away something which they dont have to deal with in captivity. Seaworld really does care about their killer whales and they learn more about them every day.

But I chose not to give my money to this amusement park that likes to brand itself as research facility. Hoping and being glad is nice....but the entrance fee they paid still contributes to these animals being kept in inadequate conditions. Blackfish came out in 2013, Seaworld has been controversial for quite a few years now.

Unfortunately, not all animals "can" return to the wild safely. Those who work in marine biology know that a dolphin born in captivity with a parent who won't make it well out in the wild is best off staying with the parents rather than separated--it won't be taught the skills it needs to survive (obviously for something like a sea turtle, bit of a different story). An animal may not be able to hunt well enough to prevent starvation, an animal may not get along well in a large group/pack, an animal may not perform well in its natural environment--there's numerous reasons. Almost all animals in captivity are not just there because people want to see them through glass, they are there because that "is" their chance to survive. Now--I'm not too well read-up on the situation with SeaWorld, all I really have heard about it is the controversy of the documentary "Blackfin" and I haven't even seen that. I'm not saying that I don't think the tanks should be a bit bigger or that they shouldn't be trained to do stunts or any of that, because as I said, I'd like to know more before taking a stance. I'd like to see these animals flourishing in the wild just as much as anyone and I mean it, but I also wouldn't want to see them hurting or in severe cases dying because they were put in an environment that they won't be able to adequately adapt to. Just, whoever reads this, don't go around shaming every person who works with animals--because most all of them are trying to help and give creatures the best life they can, and sometimes they do have to make the hard choices...

SeaWorld is actually planning on phasing out the orca show completely, so hopefully what that means is that they won’t allow the orcas to have anymore captive born babies (most of the orcas in the show now are captive born, they haven’t caught wild orcas for years now). The shows now are still being done but are focused more on basically just giving the orcas play time and stimulation rather than being a show. It would be great if they could just remove the orcas, but I think the difficulty thing with that is that most orca retirement centers are free range, usually meant for orcas who were caught from the wild and are being returned, aka orcas who already know how to hunt. Sea world’s orcas won’t be able to learn to do that (as far as we know now), so they’ll most likely need to stay in a controlled, and sadly smaller environment, for the rest of their lives, regardless of if they’re retired or still doing shows.

I just went to sea world today for a field trip and the whales didn't want to do the show and the host was trying to act like this was something that always happens and it was normal. Also they all had floppy fins. The reason for this is they have no space in which to swim freely, and they're depressed and anxious. #FreeTheWhales

We have those, they are called prisons. For those of you who think only bad people go to jail and/or prison, well you’re wrong. Most people simply can’t afford a good attorney and, therefore, can’t afford bail. Most people in jail haven’t even been convicted of a crime, yet they are forced to wait for months or even years in jail until their trial date, which is guaranteed to be one sided since they cannot afford decent representation. The prosecutor will then lie and tell the prison he/she could face life in prison and hopefully out of fear, he/she will accept a plea making it an easy win for the prosecutor. Now, the prosecutor may not even have evidence to prove the case, but the defendant (person being accused) doesn’t know his/her rights and likely can’t afford representation to help him/her out of it. Thus, millions of innocent lives are ruined. They are forced to live in cages when they have done nothing wrong in the first place. Take criminal justice classes in college kids, it WILL save your life one day, especially if you live in America. Please, do it for yourself.

Can’t believe people actually pay to see these Orcas trapped in a cage being forced to preform. I admit I went to a SeaWorld show before when I was younger and I didn’t know. Most of the people are full grown adults without children, like they should know Orcas are supposed to be in the wild? If I were trapped in like a literal pool for even more than like a day I’d go insane, imagine how these whales feel. THEY SHOULD BE IN THE WILD. If you want to help orcas with wounds then go for it, but after that don’t capture them, set them free again and don’t USE THEM FOR ENTERTAINMENT AND FOR *MONEY.*

So not only they are not free and with their family but also living a nightmare in a daily life basis - just for the entertainment of humans. Disgusting.

Actually the collapsed fin is caused most commonly by a change in the structure of the fins collagen. This can happen due to stress and lowered blood pressure. The most common cause happens when there is inadequate pressure on the fin (swimming great distances) and since they live in a bathtub they dont get that pressure from swimming in circles. I hope this helps :) btw I am by no means a professional I have just done some research on the subject so it isnt the most reliable info.

Machine à mouille if their fins are flopped over it means that they’re super unhealthy. Orcas are supposed to have strong fins like dolphins. If you imagine what a dolphin would look like with a floppy fin, it’s kind of sad. In the wild, orcas usually have very strong fins, but when they’re kept in captivity like this, they become weak and depressed, and their fins eventually start to flop.

Seriously, just think about it for a minute and realize how harsh that is. It's not like you're keeping a hyperactive dog indoors. It's an animal that lives in the vastness of the ocean and moves around in a way that humans can't imagine, and an aquarium of that size is the human equivalent of being locked in a one-square-foot cell for the rest of your life.

Off topic, but one time when I was at an aquarium, there was one guy telling his kid something. I heard everything he said. He said "This is the blood from a girl, a little blonde 5 year old girl. They fed her to the sharks and she was screaming so loud that you could hear her from the gift shop!" (the gift shop was at the complete other side of the aquarium) He was pointing to a blood-red splatter on one of the rocks. I'm still disturbed by what he said.

Poor child, to have a father like that.
