Shaman King: Ending Explained

Mappa Douji *is* included in volume 25 of the KZB edition between chapters 279 and 280. And the new Kodansha release has Mappa Douji in volume 27 in between chapters 239 and 240.

Oof can't believe I missed that, thanks for pointing it out! That takes a lot of criticism out of the Ohachiyo inclusion in the ending. I still think Hao's mother is too significant but Mappa-Douji's inclusion does give more reason to enjoy the ending. Thanks Jalekok!

My biggest issue with the final arc is that it completely leaves the original spirits out of the action. Yoh's relationship with amidamaru was so important at the beginning but got completely abandoned

12:25 While I mostly agree with this point, Hao isn't completely evil. There are moments in the story where he is poignant and can be reasoned/negotiated with. The coffee scene with Yoh is the biggest example.

If 2021 anime incorporates the prequels like Shaman King Zero, Mappa Douji well, then maybe some of your issues with the different character arcs can be assuaged. I firmly believe that the 2021 anime can give the Shaman King story a LOT of room to breathe and I’m super excited.

@denys vision I think Yoh's journey is more based on learning and growing than it is actually winning. The Shaman Fight itself is even called "an investigation of the heart." While he certainly wanted to win, sometimes you come up against things that won't go your way. Personally, I liked to see that take in a series. Something that bucks the trend of the shonen hero always finding the win

My main problem with the ending that I saw people would probably have is that It might feel anticlimactic for a final battle to end like that, but I also kinda like it. How there is no chickenly tic toe way around beating a omni potent god Hao was the strongest and that's really all there is to it. This ending basically sums up to instead of if you can't beat em join em to if you can't beat em change it or well them so you don't have to beat em. I also like how it's an ending where the main character does not became shaman king or gets the one piece or becomes the hokage which you know completely would catch most shows of guard.

a lot of the issues was because the series was cancelled before it could gradually reach that ending, I can only imagine how much trouble the creator had to go through just to give us fans closure but it did certainly feel rushed (likely b/c the creator had little to go off of in order to produce and publish the ending) like I expected more teams highlighted but we only rlly got to see the Gandara and then the tourny is cut short to crown Hao, none the less it's still my fav ending

I've seen this sort of thing before, this paradox of omnipotence defeating yourself. To those unfamiliar with Marvel Comics (not to be confused with the movies, which were far more concerned with resolving their own plotlines than representing their source material... and even that's being fairly generous...), this is essentially what undoes Thanos in the original Infinity Gauntlet story. I really like stories like this that depict power levels having some sort of Uncanny-Valley-like effect on your mind. That point where you become so powerful that you realize power is pointless, or that you don't deserve it, or the most rational use of irresistible force is to not use it at all. To pull from another western comic book villain, Lex Luthor, he had the following to say upon temporarily receiving the powers of Superman: "It's so obvious. I can actually *see* and hear and feel and taste it and... the fundamental forces are yoked by a single thought. [...] I can actually see the machinery and wire connecting and separating everything since it all began. This is how *he* sees all the time, every day. Like it's all just us, in here, together. And we're all we've got." One of the few things that can give me hope about the species is that some guy on the other side of the planet could come to the same conclusions about these kinds of universal truths. No one owns these ideas. No one invented them. We just find them at our own pace... or succumb in the attempt.

I don't mind the ending except for the fact that Matamune's story was not really resolved. I would be totally satisfied if it had ended at the mountain story arc, but they did tease that Yoh would resurrect/meet him again. And the fact that Amidamarugot short handed as I feel their relationship was one of the most important things in the story. Does somebody know if Matamune's was shorthanded because of the cancellation. The anime made it seem like his absence was a clear choice made by the author.

I really loved the ending! Your criticisms are 100% fair, and I definitely think it could be better! But I love that overall the ending stuck to the themes the series presented from the start. So many shonen series would've just given Yoh so crazy new power up to defeat the "unbeatable" Hao, but I love that SK didn't do that. An OP villain who actually doesn't get beat. I love that! From the very beginning Yoh beat his enemies by fixing their heart/spirit, so it was fitting he would do the same with Hao. I really think Shaman King is a beautiful story. Great video! P.S. While Takei's art was always incredible, my lord he went BANANAS with some of those panels in the KZB edition. That man is endlessly talented.

I love the ending The final villain in all shounens is usually a god, and usually the main cast get powered up to that godly level, to defeat that god, Shaman king is no different, except it is subtly, whereas in normal shounens that godly status is achieved through an individual's hard work, and Shaman king, the powers come from collective work, and by the end it's still not enough, so the conflict has to be resolved with negotiations and compromise. The fact that conflict isn't solved by force, just delayed by it (hao being killed, and then revived), and it's resolved by negotiations instead is what makes the ending good for me, also seeing the entire cast again sweetens it even more

If you're just venting, then I apologize (not trying to be condescending), but if you're looking for the real answer it's because the anime was being produced while the manga was and it caught up to it. The decision was made (according to the director) by Shueisha to have the anime come up with an original ending to continue. Funny enough the director of the original anime is also the director of the original Fullmetal Alchemist anime, so it happened to him twice! He didn't want to change endings, but it wasn't up to him. Thankfully just like FMA got Brotherhood, Shaman King will get it's reboot! And thankfully these days most anime follow the seasonal format so they never get too caught up to the manga and don't have a ton of filler either! But yeah, I agree that a good general rule is if you want the "purest" story, always read the manga! Cheers!

Hi, I just subscribed. I think that you’ve been really fair in your analysis. I love that. Horohoro’s story does feel rushed and it wasn’t the most impactful, but I’ve let it slide because he’s not the main character and the story doesn’t revolve around him. I think that it could revolve around him more but I’ve accepted it as is. Good job pointing out that the side chapter with Ohachiyo isn’t in the main story because that’s kinda bad. I think Shaman King is better than a lot of mainstream shounen. Can’t wait for the remake with a better designed Chocolove 😅

Assassination classroom also ends quite well if you havent read that either. Or if you're after something more episodic, the first three seasons of DICE the webtoon are really strong. That's fair, I definitely felt the same way for a long time. I get why people don't like the way this series wraps up. To it's credit, I think the series does a good job of setting up Hao as way too strong. He's had 3 lifetimes of learning and fighting which the intense training the main cast get still can't hope to match. So the plan changes to fight his convictions and win. ln the end they don't really "win", just opening Hao enough to buy some time to make a change. It's a hugely different take to how most series like this would wrap up and for me, I think it matches the tone of the rest of the series. Anyways, there'll always be the original anime to see Hao get sliced in half by Yoh!
