in Morocco it's called taktouka, the eggs are usually left out and it's served as a warm salad along with a tajine and bread
That looks AMAZING!
This is a perfect recipe for this time of year here in the US midwest. My tomatoes and peppers are just finishing up, and my ducks are still laying almost daily. Can't wait to do this!
I made this today for tea. My miss 10 loved it .. totally impressed that a 10 yr old would enjoy a veg and egg dish.. Cheers
Shakshuka is delicious. Perfect lazy day brunch.
Btw Hugh ! It was you who inspired me to make my own prosciutto! I made them and for a first timer and living in Los Angeles weather how i pulled it off was a miracle, all i can say about the whole affair was that it was torture waiting 11 months to slice into my prosciutto, the episode i was inspired was way back when you barely moved into your farm and there was another gentleman who helped you butcher your hams ( prep) them you were working outside and you made some salami and hung them up outside.
I reckon, that looks amazingly delicious!!!!
From 🇹🇳 the best shakshouka ever 🇬🇧🇬🇧😉
Beautiful... simply beautiful.
Thanks Hugh, the peppers are a sure fire hit. Brilliant recipe.
Looks delicious Hugh. thanks
What a treat! Perfect late night supper when I got in yesterday evening!!
In turkey we say "menemen" but instead of red pepper we just use green pepper. Mostly we eat menemen in breakfast of course with georgius turkish tea;)
Finally found some local duck eggs (not an easy task in northern New Jersey). Not so easy to find Romero's or Poblano's this time of year either; but the task is accomplished. This Sunday is the day of reckoning! I made this about a month ago with bell peppers and chicken eggs, and it was very nice; but somehow I felt we were missing something special. This time, we'll do it right!!!!!
I had this for lunch in Tunisia where it’s pronounced exactly like the man says in the video.
I made this for our evening meal tonight, it was amazing! Being in Canada at this time of year, I couldn't find a poblano pepper so I used orange, yellow & red bell peppers and a finely diced Thai birds eye chili (I keep mine in the freezer). It was great, fantastically smoky with a bit of heat and very filling even though it's a vegetarian meal. Oh, and I used regular chicken eggs too. Some nice Calabrese bread mopped it all up!
Use part of the shell to retrieve a broken piece of shell. Has natural affinity and easy to retrieve.
Looks delicious.
We make it in Malta too! But we add basil and mint leaves, olives and serve it as a side to grilled fish. I also like to place it on local bread called ftira, top it with cheese and oven bake the whole thing...
Thanks for Sharing Hugh
Nicely done again. Excellent addition of duck eggs. Lovely Brunch item. Please keep sharing these delicious video's. Blessings ChefMike
I made this for my mom and me and we both loved it
On a bed of crisp hash browns. That's what I'm thinking. YUM!
Like his shakshuka nice?! i want to try his.thanks for share.🙏

I think they're scores written for the TV show. I always love them, too.
A couple of tips, Hugh...cut a little cross in the tomato bottoms before scalding them helps with peeling. And to recover an errant egg shell from the dish, use the large shell as a 'scoop'. A very nice dish & vid nonetheless.
The Magyar (Hungary) have similar, calles "lecsó", spicy and sweet
It's called 🇹🇳TUNISIAN SHAKSHUKA 🇹🇳 Not Just med dish. It's originated from tunisia northafrica and sometimes we add MERGUEZ to it which is a spiced lamb and beef sausages 😊
Dear River Cottage Team, This is exactly the recipe for the so called "Piperade", an Belgian breakfast (exept the cumin and the smoked paprika). Delicious! Remaining good times :-) Thank you for your great videos!

it's all over the middle east too, it's just that some call it different names.

mkvali Moroccan Jews brought to what it's called Israel not to the whole Middle East. It's a simple dish eaten all over the Middle East despite it's also known in Morocco and other North African countries.

I'm jealous. I wanna live there and I want duck eggs!!
It's a traditional Tunisian dish (originated in Tunisia)...we even have people with last name Shakshouk/Chakchouk
Is it bad that for a second I thought his necklace was a millennium puzzle. XD love this channel.
Glad to have found ur You tube channel again, forgot your channel name and just stumbled on this vid! Btw its not a stew, Shakshuka is a North African breakfast dish, I know it well! grew up eating it every weekend . Great dish pronounced "Shack Shuka"
Cheer Hugh
Damn they cleaned that pan!
Poblano's are an amazing pepper, would love to see them more readily available
It has been all over the place in Central Europe.
Can anyone help me find the program he made bunny burgers and sold them at a farmers markets Thanks
I love Shakshuka, especially with some sesame potatoes
This is an old Persian omelette, though Hugh substituted duck eggs for regular eggs. looks delicious.

Actually, he was right, it’s a northern african dish. Also, he said that he uses chickens normally.
I just made it but after 10 minutes of baking eggs got hard like rocks, I love nice runny yolks so it was ruined, did I do something wrong? I used jumbo size chicken eggs

Originally it's a Danish dish called "blamblumblibbelibleb"
Shakshouka 🇩🇿❤❤
I noticed the use of what looks like a cast iron pan. Some regard the acidity of tomatoes absorbs iron and affects the flavor.
Even better with Italian San Mazarno toms.
The easy way to get rid of egg shell is to use egg shell. The bit that is in the dish will stick to a piece of egg shell dipped in next to it. i have made a similar dish but with fried eggs on top and always assumed it was Mexican!
Anybody know where you can buy Poblano peppers? I have never seen them in the UK.
@ArthurDent12

RedBear535 Just needs a bit of heat, you can substitute with a mild pepper such as habanero. Tweak and adjust.
@VietyV

Any latin american grocery stores near you? Otherwise you can sub other peppers as well. If you really want the poblano flavour then you can also get dried ones and rehydrate them.

+Arthur Dent Habanero isn't mild at all- it is probably the hottest chile that is widely available. It is delicious, though.
beautiful the way you made. but you said its north African dish I m surprised we have heard its a Egyptian !
Wowwww... I trying to go completely vegan, so I think I will do this without eggs, any suggestions dear Hugh F-W 🤔🤔🤔🤔 Thanks for sharing you're wonderful. I been an fan since for ever it seems 😝😂😜😝😜😂. I used to watch when I lived in Sweden and you had your tvshow on BBC Food if I recall it correctly, Scape to River Cottage, in the late '90's if not mistaken 😂😝😜😝😂 Thanks for sharing your wonderful tips, recipes and your little paradise on earth that is "River Cottage" 👏🏽👏🏽😘❤️🌹
Saffron at the beginning seems like a waste.
This is a Scottish dish. We invented it after discovering cumin plants growing near the main haggis hunting grounds. We normally add a dash of Irn Bru to give it a certain oomph!

no its an arab dish. they also make it in places in africa and in israel. if it was made by scotts why on earth would it be called shakshouka??
@malcolmscrawdyke1868

Tozmo M is correct. The Scots invented this dish as well as that other classic - chicken chow mien. Only to be enjoyed after two rails of skag off a hoor's bahookie.

Tozmo M i concur this dish was invented by the Scots. The haggis farmer named the now classic after a fleeting romance he'd had in Iran

British are much better in picturing and marketing their food to look delicious rather than serve a real good food. and that's after exploring London for 2 weeks with all those hip cafes and restaurants

It is very common in Israel, where it was brought by jewish immigrants from morroco and tunnisia. Usually we make it spicier though
@yitzchakepstein2142

There are different variations. Israel's style includes pita and sometimes meat. We also like it pretty spicy, although the best version is the Moroccan. (In my humble opinion)
Why would you take the skins of those lovely tomatoes, but leave the skin on your peppers?
mmmm tomato and duck period, my favorite
The camera panning and shaking is really making us dizzy
lol whos the single dislike??
Ur meant to use the shell to take shell from ur food Hugh, I have arabick blood that's not right, its a version on the theme but wrong, however I will let you off, as I love watching you

Well, it has different variations. I live in Israel, so we have different backgrounds cooking. So sometimes it's Moroccan, sometimes Tunisian, sometimes Egyptian, and at home I like to do the Israeli style, with some meat, and no peppers.

GOapeshit14 Anything you say, stupid. That's why you pick food recipe videos as the place to spew your risible religious idiocy? Because that's the only place you can think of for making "serious" comments? You're almost too stupid to be troll, which is quite an achievement. Props for that. Enjoy another flag for trolling and hate speech, stupid.
