Healer main since 2007, switched to BM hunter this xpac as a "starter DPS" and got decent with her, and now trying spriest for the last few days. This has been the best guide I've found so far! Just hit 70 and getting in the swing of things, noticing what I'm doing wrong and where I need to improve. Thank you so much for making such an informative guide!! Hey man, quick question. at 5:18 you cast void torrent but plague expires during the cast. Would that be considered a mistake because we lost mastery mid cast, or is it okay because the void torrent had snapshotted its damage and is still considering the target as "triple dotted" ? Also on a side note for videos like these (which are great, not complaining !) it would be a nice addition to have the details plugin showing the cast log so we can see what you're actually casting more easily. It's not always easy to figure out when you're doing a few instants in a row or spell queuing an instant between two casts, stuff like that :p

As long as it’s up for a few seconds that’s still okay to send torrent. It doesn’t snapshot but you kind of have to split the difference on the benefit to at least get the cast off. Also I am running the details integration, it’s right above my webcam frame :)

I'm curious about how holy nova and divine star fit into the rotation, are they just there as filler for movement or when there is nothing else to press or are they worth pressing over mind flay when everything else is on cd?

We do not press Holy Nova or Divine Star in the rotation. We take Holy Nova to path into the 3% magic defensive node, and we use Divine Star only in pre-pull to build up Insanity.

In an aoe aituation, would you recommend switching targets for DP or just spam it on prio? I feel likenhaving multiple DP dots rolling would he more damage overall, no? TIA

Good question. When using distorted reality spreading is a gain for overall damage. But if you are using minds eye that talent is for maximizing prio on one target.

If you are using Distorted Reality you should spread Devouring Plague and cast it on a new target each time you get enough Insanity for more overall damage. If you are using Mind's Eye you should funnel your Devouring Plagues onto a single priority enemy.

Good question, if you have procs of Deathspeaker you just use it over normal casts of Mind Spike/Mind Flay, not a very high priority with the season 4 set bonus.

I downloaded you castbar, and mine doesn't change colour when i use "Mind Flay: Insanity". What can i do to get the exact same castbar as in this video @publik?

That is Neltharion's Call to Suffering trinket that drops from the Aberrus raid! It is a great trinket for Shadow this tier, with a great visual :)

I'm super new to Spriest and I am having trouble doing damage in packs that involve much more that 8 targets, like say 16 targets or even in boss phases like RLP Melidrussa whelps or in AA the big pull before the boss and Overgrown Ancient adds. What do I do in these high target count situations? It feels like I fall behind a lot in damage compared to other classes here because shadow crash doesn't get everything.

what I do is, I have a mob combat counter so i know how many mobs were in combat with. then if it shows 8 or under then i just shadowcrash and will get everything. If for example it says 14 mobs in combat with. I know that SC will hit 8, so I would have to VT 6 targets before shadow crashing. On top of that you have to know which mobs are gonna die fast and not worth VT'ing. so if the mobs will be up for atleast 20s then id say its worth VTing, but if theyre just gonna die, youll just have to accept that other dpsers will pad off that pack.

So most of these are a case by case basis, here are a few notes: - On fights like RLP Melidrussa you just save Shadow Crash and simply are content with the 8 that it hits, and ignoring the rest to tunnel into the boss. Manually DoTing each add that doesnt get hit by Shadow Crash isnt worth, especially during cooldowns. - 16 target pulls are tricky, and rely on you being able to pull _with_ the tank using the aggro drop from Fade to cast Vampiric Touch's on as many mobs as you can while grouping, so that once they are grouped Shadow Crash can finish the remaining 8 mobs. In massive pulls that are grouped up quickly this becomes extremely challenging, and if you are rushed just manually DoT 4 of them, plus Shadow Crash to get 12 dots out. At that point you then full send cooldowns. As you run out of high priority spells to press (i.e. just left with things like raw Mind Flay/Mind Spike you can then DoT mobs you missed). Shadow Priest doesnt need to have everything DoTed to do good damage, you just need _most_ of the big pull and particularly the priority target mobs. Hope this was helpful

@Publikwow Yeah I think I understand a lot more now how the class works and these needs help with pulls that are gathered pretty fast and some bosses. I've been doing a lot more keys today to get a better feel of the class. Most of the time it really feels like just most things and the single target the prio and redot other things when necessary.

You basically only use SWD if you have a deathspeaker proc or you are in execute. And even in those cases you only slot it in above normal fillers except for things like movement or sniping a low health mob for death and madness

You always clip normal mind flay for something more important. Usually not worth to ever clip mind flay insanity but in really high pull AoE you could after a few ticks.

It makes upkeep easier in single target, but the spreading playstyle can be more complex in dungeon scenarios. This page has some info on that: www.icy-veins.com/wow/shadow-priest-pve-dps-mythic-plus-tips TLDR: for single target with void eruption Distorted Reality is 2% worse, 8% increase on AoE if you spread devouring plague, and 16% loss in priority target damage in aoe.

Is there any benefit to spreading devouring plague on a second target or just keeping it on one?

When you use distorted reality it is more overall damage to spread, yes. If you are using minds eye you funnel onto one target for increased priority target damage.

You only press shadow word: death when the target is below 20% or you have a deathspeaker proc in builds without inescapable torment. And this action is very low priority, only above normal fillers. Depends on your exact gear setup, both builds are very competitive. For movement scenarios voidform is typically the default suggestion but if you can afford to turret with good gear dark ascension can end up being slightly better.

Great question, Insanity does not _fully_ get reset, it just gets reset down to 25. So you are free to generate up to that amount.

im doing same rotation and at 490 ilvl and only able to do 130k dps single target with void build. not really sure what to do here. i saw you were doing 220k plus and thats a massive difference between my 130k. might be cause of my stats lol i have 36% crit, 32% haste and 7% mastery and 14% vers

Basically at that point it means if you have the Insanity to use on it, go ahead and use it regardless of how long is left on the DoT. Normally we wait to cast Devouring Plague until the DoT is about to expire OR we are about to cap on Insanity.

Part of that could be gear, keep in mind sims by default assume full buffs. Make sure are use the Target Dummy sim.
