Shadow City: Homelessness in New York | Fault Lines

Fault Lines examines New York's homelessness crisis and looks at the forces displacing many from their homes.
One in 30 American children is homeless, according to a recent report published by the National Center on Family Homelessness - marking an all-time high for the United States.
About 8.4 million people call the city of New York home, but more people in New York City are homeless today than at any point since the 1930s.
In just one decade the number of people living in New York's homeless shelters has nearly doubled, reaching 60,000 per night in 2014.
It is a homelessness crisis - unprecedented in any other American city.
Why are so many in News York homeless? And why has the city failed to address its homelessness crisis?
Fault Lines looks at the forces that are displacing thousands from their homes and investigates what life is like for homeless people in New York City.

What a blessing to have a place to call your own even if small as is mine too (11squares) for this temporal life, as you say - somewhere to lay your head at night. I often think about the hundreds of millions of people who do not have a place such as I have or food such as I can buy, or clean water, or even clean air. But there are times when we can give a little to some others who are in need.

@@pjay3586 It may seem a bit trite, but it may be more correct to read it as - "The love of many is A root of all evil." Pride was THE first root of all evil, which then found its way into the heart of mankind, and that first man didn't have money to begin with, but he became loaded with pride.. Pride comes before a fall, and such poverty is a tragic symptom of pride which is a father of greed. It is pride that exalts a man above his fellow man and refuses to bend low to help him when he is unable to pay his rent or whatever. Governments who ignore or refuse to alleviate the suffering of the poor have a lot to answer for. It is a mammoth task but it is fixable, with a good dose of compassion, mercy and tenderness, and political will.

They raise because they can. The market pushes the rent to go up. For a landlord, it makes to them to raise the price along the market because it will be filled anyway. Think about it, if you can earn $2,000/month by kicking out some strangers who is paying $1,500/month, are you going to do it? For most people, the answer would be "yes". That's exactly why we cannot let the Market decide everything. That's why the government should step in and provide social welfare for those people with lower income. That's why that "small government" concept is a bullshit made up by those wealthy people. Same thing goes to the health system in the U.S. What a shame.

My father became homeless in 2013. He’s always worked. He’s a taxi driver and drives every day except when he goes to church. I was homeless on and off and finally moved to another country to build a life, save money and help my father. I’m American. Born and raised in Brooklyn. Have a Masters and worked several jobs, but got priced out. It’s hard to leave home and everything and everyone you know and love, but it’s worth it to build self stability and roots in a new place. You actually become a pioneer and then your family has a place to visit or even live because you made the path. ☺️

That Latin woman that was on this video representing the city, when she said lets move on, made me cringe. That kind of pompous attitude is the same attitude rich landlords have when confronted with facts. That pompous state employee would sell her family to be able to continue making her salary. State employees, politicians and landlords are the read problem in this kind of situation. Why doesn't the state just build or buy buildings to house the homeless. It would be cheaper than paying landlords.

I was also homeless when I stayed in NY during '09. Rent was somewhat cheaper back then, but that all changed, because nowadays paying for rent + the first month's deposit is ridiculously insane to a point where you either have to be rich, or working OVERtime / seven days a week and save up every. single. dollar. which you earn, just to find a decent apartment! My heart goes out to those who got help and survived homelesss just like I did. For those who are currently homeless: Please, DON'T give up or let anyone turn you down- be strong and (YES) you WILL make it. Stay blessed 🙏

When you lose your house, the lawyer given you, notifies his friends and family and gives ALL the particulars for them to bid, because they (the lawyer) can’t... I can go on and on. The cost of renting is ridiculas. In Florida too. Raising children alone is extremly hard. It takes 2 + incomes in a household to just get by. In NY 2+ incomes wouldnt be enough unless one had a high paying job. More are becoming homeless because of extreme weather destroying homes and buisnesses. West coast fires and floods , tornadoes, and hurricanes in midwest and east coast.

She only see's green and has no mean to help others just the like rich guy from earlier and tries to skirt around the question when confronted. Greed is the big problem in the city and it has been spreading into Upstate. Agencies like Access-VR, Office of Mental Health (OMH), Office For the People With Developmental Disabilities(OPWDD), Northeast Career Planning and many others are just in it all for the cash and not the people they are serving. @@yvonnespearing Nothing is wrong, well there is but not what we think. I've said before that the people you served those sandwiches to need more than food. They need information and inspiration. The place you served those sandwiches at could also hand out packets of information about orgs that are willing to help. If we stop handing out money and food and just gave them information they would eventually use that. It's all they would have. Right now I'm involved with the Doe Fund, an organization that helps homeless men on two fronts: homelessness, and lack of skills. You have to pay rent there so they put you to work at 15 dollars an hour and drug treatment is a requirement. They also help a man acquire some skills and certifications along with job placement assistance to help you get and maintain employment and housing. How many more people know of these types of organizations? Let's put it out there and stop with the coddling and begging these no good politicians to do the jobs our taxes pay for them to do and do it ourselves. If every one of these landlords fixed the problems in those apartments their profits would go way down - you sign a lease and it's the landlord who is supposed to fix a broken pipe or broken toilet or cracked ceiling. And since they are the ones actually breaking the leases to these people they should lose the ownership of those apartment buildings.

It is about the money. Real estate in New York costs so much because the housing supply can't possibly keep up with the population. This makes it very expensive. There are cities that have artificial housing problems like San Francisco where people protest and try to stop apartments from being built but also complain about the cost of living. If you don't have the money to live at the epicenter of the world economy, then you should probably find somewhere else to live. I don't live there because it's way too expensive.
