F him for taking Knights Watch. George R.R. Martin writes gay characters. George R.R. Martin was asked why he included gay characters in his books, He said, "I noticed there were gay people in the world, so they should be in my world too."

For the few homophobic ASOIAF fans I've interacted with, it seems like they're fine with the way gay characters are represented in the series because their gayness isn't "a focus" the story. They're okay with gay people as long as we stay quiet, in the background and suffer in silence in a homophobic society and that's what ASOIAF portrays for the most part. As long as being gay is a joke and seen as perverted and immoral these people are a-okay with portrayals of gay people. They have no empathy.

@@boianko I don't think Martin portrays gays that way. They are princes. And literally one of the deadliest fighters in the book series. The viper died really quickly though. I don't remember Martin playing them for jokes. I haven't read them in years though.

@@antarchy1 I'm not saying Martin portrays them like that necessarily, the gay characters in the books are powerful, influential and driven. However when it comes to their sexuality, they need to hide and talk in allegory. Renly marries a woman he clearly isn't attracted to because he could never achieve his political goals if he came out as gay. Jon Connington has to hide his feelings his whole life and even after the death of his one true love because they would never be accepted. The world is hetero normative for the most part (Dorne is an exception) and gays aren't allowed to exist out and about in public society unless they burry that part of themselves deep down. I don't think it's a bad thing to write the world that way, it's realistic, and I don't think George is portraying homophobia as a good thing. The people who already have homophobic ideas read about this homophobic world and think "oh wow, that's so cool", the same way sexist ASOIAF fans appreciate the realistic portrayal of how women were treated in the olden days. They don't empathise with the plights of these characters, they see them as people who either got unlucky in the way they were born and need to suck it up, or as people who annoyingly struggle against a system that rightfully tries to put them in their place.

@@boianko Isn't that more him writing about political intrigue in a medieval setting. It's good Drama and it's realistic to the way those societies were. I don't think it was a conscious choice on his part. It just fits the world and story. But I haven't read them in at least 10 years. So I barely remember anything about it, and I wouldn't have been dissecting the way he wrote gay characters back then.

@@boiankoI am honestly always baffled by those kinds of people, the whole point of ASOIF is that its world is AWFUL in almost every societal way imaginable, George's writing is about pointing out every flaw possible about those societies and our own. Sure, it's realistic within the boundaries of a fictional effing world, so by agreeing on how those characters are treated, you are actually doing what the story is criticizing, it's never portrayed as how thing should be. I am honestly surprised these people enjoy something they don't understand, it's media illiteracy at its peak

It's called Kin Selection, btw. There are traits that don't help the individual pass on genes, but may help related individuals pass on genes, some of which they share. In this case, a social animal having non-breeding adults that are still able bodied and capable of gathering food is a huge evolutionary advantage for the group. Biologists figured out Kin Selection before they even knew how genetics work.

  • @SirRebrl

Pointedly, it reduces in-group competition for resources. As long as there's enough replacement of breeding individuals, concentrating more support for fewer young is more effective at keeping those young alive. The logic becomes increasingly clear in smaller groups - if food is scarce, is it better to have meager gatherings split between clusters of cousins, leaving everyone hungry, or to have parents and aunts/uncles working together to feed one group of siblings enough to grow healthy for competition outside the family?

I'd also like to point out that the evolutionary effort required to eliminate homosexuality would itself have far reaching consequences. Species don't actually have the ability to just selectively change their attributes at will. Changing a gene or two could lead to many other changes in addition to eliminating the possibility that some members will be gay. And since natural selection is the only method we really have for this, it makes sense that it stuck around.

I'm sure even the ancient Greeks and Chinese knew about kin selection. That's where both of these quotes from from: "A society grows great when old men plant trees they know they will never sit" -- An old Greek proverb "If you think in terms of a year, plant rice; if in terms of ten years, plant trees; if in terms of 100 years, teach the people." -- Confucius Even in ancient societies, it was recognized that you can contribute to society far more than producing children. People concerned with biological reproduction forget how much work and organization at a society level is required for us to maintain natality rates. "Gay" people certainly aren't a threat to human evolution and even might be a sign of a new socialadaptation that moves the responsibility of reproductive work OUT of the closed environment of thetraditional family, into a more efficient and healthy community based approach.

We didn't have "bedrooms" - or even permanent homes to live in - until agriculture made it possible to stay at the same place your whole life. Back then, when we were living in small groups, you couldn't be absolutely sure who fathered which children. So the nurturing was likely done by the group as a whole. In those circumstances, having 10-20% not procreate would be a great benefit for the groups survival.

Which implies they're somewhere on the spectrum of bi, which does range all the way from a step from het to a step from totally gay. So, it sounds like their system they live under, their believes they are grown to, all this, it forces them to a position where they hate that part in themselves, and effectively project it onto all others, because they refuse to believe that being different on that scale (or many other scales) is normal, being the same is what they perceive as normal. Everything's got to be very standard and singular without any variation, all things different are evil, scary, or otherwise untrustworthy (and they certainly couldn't be any more different than anyone else, thus all must have these feelings, and choose to actively pursue them, or deny them). ONE SICKNESS and your chances to survive is super low or you're handicapped for a long time leading to more troubles and starting a spiral. You would need to start a fire, find food and animals to get pelt from. All this takes so much time and energy for one person that it's basically impossible. You sprained your ankle ? Too bad, you have to continue hunting and gathering. Also hunting is super risky because you won't be able to get yourself fixed up or at least get back to your encampment if ever injured in any major survivable way. Crocodilia “the modern crocodilians” didn’t appear until 85ish million years ago during the late Cretaceous. Alligators have only been around for 35 million years, but the crocodilian body plan is so successful that it evolved multiple times in the pseudosuchian line (the line that would eventually lead to modern crocodilians), and even in non crocodilians such as early whales and amphibians.

Part of the reason I can't draw is because I can't describe or visualize what it is I am thinking. So I can use A.I. art to help me describe an idea and my brother can draw it up based on the idea, rather than the image itself. In other words, the A.I. art is a place holder and a jumping off point. No one is using the art and claiming it as our own. Since one, its not our art and two, it's essentially concept art in the earliest draft.

Biologist here: First of all, it can be an evolutionary disadvantage to have all adults breeding in a family or social group, as infant mortality can rise due to the high child-to-adult ratio and resources can become depleted. In these cases, non-breeding adults who participate in childcare strongly improve the fitness of the kids, on the whole making 'homosexual behavior' a win for the family and, by extension, the homosexual individuals own genes as well since their are bringing up siblings (50% similar genes), nieces and nephews (17% similar genes). 90% of giraffes mounting other giraffes is male on male, and they are seeming willing participants. This occurs even when there are females present. Lions are not as high of stats, but show similar behavior. First encounter of squid s*xual acts was both gay and interspecies, with the smaller species male topping the larger one. We've known of penguin homosexuality since the 1900s, but the poor Christian scientists where so aghast and befuddled they covered up their research by writing their findings in Greek, making it primarily inaccessible to general society - potentially due to the risk of being ostracized as well, since they could be accused of making up random stuff in Antarctica to then come home and 'spread their filth' to general society. Dolphins form pair bonds with the same sex, often between breeding seasons, and engage in s*xual behavior. Many parrots have same-sex couples as a first choice, too. None of that is by any means due to absence of Finally Bonobos shouldn't be held to human standards wrt p*do stuff. In their species it's normal and common, with youngs initiating things themselves a lot of them time. Further, they primarily participate in oral, both giving and receiving. In our species, a majority of cultures keep kids away from that sorta thing (side-eyes aspects of A. Greece real hard here) and kids rarely naturally engage in such stuff and form trauma around it. To Bonobos its an evolutionary adaptation, to humans it is not Bonobos are an absolutely wonderful species and I will take no slander of them. Meerkats, however, a totally a different thing.

Humans swivel between 1-2% depending on where we are in history. The average propensity to murder in mammals is about 0.3%, so even humans are rather staggering. The idea that only humans think is also wrong. We don't know if animals have a moral compass since that's something we made up, but learning pretty much anything about animals proves that they really aren't different from humans. Elephants apparently bury their dead (only the children, which are transportable) and are known to mourn and seek revenge. Ravens are working with wolves in a way that looks very similar to the idea of how humans domesticated wolves including hunting together and playing with the pups. Some whale species has been known to follow trends, like one will be seen wearing a "hat" and then most of the rest of the pod will start doing so as well, and like any other trend it dies out in popularity over time. Dolphins enjoy getting high. When introducing "money" to whichever primate it was studied, where the money could be exchanged for food, they started "paying for services". There was an animal in the rodent family that, when presented with food while another of its species was locked up separately and couldn't get any, would actively choose to share it. The best we've got now for how humans are different is that we're really, really good at tool making (fine detail work) and our spoken and written language has some features that allow for generational knowledge to be passed on for generations and even centuries. I also heard the whole "humans am smart, no infant-side (spelled wrong intentionally)" which ignores the entirety of human history from leaving infants in the woods after giving birth, to the need for laws to be passed in medieval europe to prevent parents from "accidentally" rolling over on their infant while sleeping, to empires like the romans removing any child who did not look fit and healthy because they would otherwise be a burden, to women being "accidentally" pushed down stairs while pregnant, to some of the drastic things done in china during the one child policy when the parents found out their one child was a girl. It's like they're talking about humans and how perfectly peaceful they are during a lecture on world war ii. It shows they are intentionally ignoring the facts

More we learn of animals, more we come to realize how much smarter they are than we thought. That is true nearly in all cases of research, with reasonable exceptions standing. Humans on the other hand, can revert into basic "bestial" behavior with a flick, if the circumstance, upbringing, or chemicals are the wrong way. The people that spout this stuff, they don't work off reality, truth, or research. They work off scripture, feelings, and preconceptions. Now, feelings matter, of course, but if you are unable to recognize reality around yourself, and allow emotions to drive you along the scripture and preconceptions entirely, well... Now i can't remember the video/source off the top of my head so i'd have to go back through my watch history to try and find it, but someone did a pride month video about how scientists do in fact find a lot of engage in homosexual behavior but that it's really, really underreported. And even if it's observed, it can be hard to tell the full story without doing experiment type studies what the actual situation is. For an example of what i mean, sheep were studied and there was a decent percentage that were distinctly labeled as gay. If a gay ram had the option of a ewe in heat or another ram, they'd still mount the ram. But the biologist had to conclude that ewes commonly do not initiate contact (they stand still and wait to be mounted) so there would be plenty of lesbian ewes that just don't get physically involved with each other due to that. Some rams would stand still instead of looking to mount and some ewes wanted to mount their partner regardless if they were rams or ewes. If there's one thing biology and evolution make abundantly clear, it's that there's variation in populations for everything. Height, sexuality, hair color, etc, are all on sliders at character creation

What Shad doesn't understand about evolution is that it doesn't only happen on an individual level, but also on the level of populations. It isn't only about the survival of the individual, but of the entire group, because a lot of animals are *social* - just like humans - and do not live alone in a vacuum. And when a group has a trait that makes a certain percentage homosexual and thus has a higher chance of survival (maybe because it lowers sexual competition - especially among males - without reducing group size) that trait is advantageous and gets passed on.

Hi guys! Gay Bio student popping in to say that they are actually starting to spot genetic differences between gay and straight men specifically. Nothing is really set in stone, of course, but they did find a cluster of about 30 genes highly corolated with homosexuality. What's funny is that those genes are basically always present and unlocked hormonally via epigenetics when in the womb. A current theory for this is something called kinship selection. Looking at factors that make men more likely to be homosexual (next male birth in succession is more likely and mothers stress/duress seems to make a boy more likely to be gay) its believed that they take on a general caretaker role unable to have children. And if im able to theoretically help my siblings produce more children through helping care for them rather than make my own, it becomes a beneficial reproductive strategy because there's more children in the next gen. And since my mother gave all of us our cluster of gay genes but only unlocked mine, all of my neices and nephews have those genes to continue the gay. Stunting parts of your bloodline also prevents overpopulation. Since we are a social species, it's easy to see us evolving biological fail safes to make sure we dont starve.

  • @malachitoler5789

    @malachitoler5789

I think what I wanted to put as a takeaway is that homosexuality doesn't have to be some defect in the human species just because it doesn't directly aid human reproduction. The principles behind biology wrap, warp, twist, and turn in many weird ways, but all life "cares about" is making more of itself. It doesn't care how it does.

Afaik, the best hypothesis for different sexualities in humans is hormone washes during pregnancy, with some evidence to support this. I promise this is relevant. Pregnant women with negative blood type start to have an immune response to the blood of their babies if they have a positive blood type. With every further pregnancy, the mother's body reacts more quickly and strongly against the babies blood which is seen as something foreign to the mother's body. This used to lead to higher and higher odds of miscarriages, until we understood this and started giving pregnant women in these circumstances immunosuppressants. Now, studies suggest that the more male babies a mother has, the higher each subsequent son has of being gay. It is believed to be similar to the previous case, in that the pregnant woman's immune system recognizes the hormones of male babies as foreign, and starts suppressing them, leading to each further pregnancy to have less of the hormones involved in developing a male baby.
