Shader nodes: compositing in Toon Boom Harmony

Фильм және анимация

I keep meaning to make this video about shader nodes.
Toon Boom Harmony is under-rated as a compositing program.
They're not scary, I promise! You can get some really cool, dynamic lighting in just a few easy steps :D . polish up that animation.

    This video totally blew my mind. I've been doing super simple lighting with tone and highlight nodes combined with applied peg transformations for a while. I always just assumed that anything other than that would be super complex, but this doesn't look too complex at all. I'm definitely going to be playing with this on my next project.

    Hey! Wanted to say I’ve been learning a lot from your channel so thank you so much for putting out videos! Also, do you have a version of Jammy that is demo animated like you have in this video? I’m not an animator but I wanted to play around with some compositing things so I needed a demo animation of the walk cycle :)

  • @StylusRumble

    @StylusRumble

    5 жыл бұрын

    I never thought to keep any of the animated stuff. For compositing tests at work I usually just throw the rigged character in the scene doing nothing. With a character like jammy you probably wont see many of the biggest issues we get in shows. Usually the biggest comp hurdle is dealing with the animators using the Z axis to level the characters. So the arm is 4 miles ahead of the body, and once the comp flattens them out everything gets messy. :/

    Oh ok yes I see how that would be cray! I’m building my portfolio to apply to animation company’s in Toronto and wanted to showcase some compositing techniques like lighting characters so I thought maybe showcasing a lit character in a walk cycle might be good.

    If I was vetting a comp position, I wouldn't hold it against you if there wasn't any animation in your reel. Just having a pre-comp, post-comp comparison is fine. Often in 2D, fx and comp are one job. So rigging up some simple interactive lights or shadows are good to see. The character doesn't need to move but the prop light can move to show what your set up does. Remember, a job-reel isn't the same as a show reel. It doesn't need to be super cool or flashy to show you know how to do the job. :)

  • @StylusRumble

    @StylusRumble

    5 жыл бұрын

    Yes, it will still work. More complex designs sometimes get a bit of weirdness, and you may need to paint in some mask overlays if you want shadows within the silhouette (like arm over body for example).This can just be another drawing, and use any colour to isolate pieces. You may also be able to use colour-selectors, if the item is a unique colour. It's a little easier with cutout, since you can isolate any of the pieces.

    This only works if you have selected a node that has special camera-window controls. For pegs, it only works if it's set to a 3D path. To show the handle that looks like a little camera you have to select the "light-Position" node and it has to be connected to the setup.

    the easiest way is to use a colour scale. If you have something that has a lot of specific colour changes- like the line art needs to stay blue, but you want the grape to turn green, it gets more complecated. I would probably make 2 versions, use a colour override for the new colours and a transparency to fade between them.

    You can just draw the stuff, with none of the techno geekary. The complex stuff is for setting up complex series pipelines. Hand drawing lighting masks for a little short or a personal project is doable. For a TV project, I just had to composite 116 scenes in a week. so building a kit like this and just dropping it into every scene is the only way that can happen.
