Shabby treatment of the dead!! This mausoleum contains lead coffin underground

Rotting smell from within, disrespectful use of a mausoleum
Hidden Crypt, with coffins, is this the stench of death?
Find a Grave
Edward Charles Sackville-West, 5th Baron Sackville (13 November 1901 - 4 July 1965) was a British music critic, novelist and, in his last years, a member of the House of Lords. Musically gifted as a boy, he was attracted as a young man to a literary life and wrote a series of semi-autobiographical novels in the 1920s and 1930s. They made little impact, and his more lasting books are a biography of the poet Thomas de Quincey and The Record Guide, Britain's first comprehensive guide to classical music on record, first published in 1951.
As a critic and a member of the board of the Royal Opera House, he strove to promote the works of young British composers, including Benjamin Britten and Michael Tippett. Britten worked with him on a musical drama for radio and dedicated to him one of his best known works, the Serenade for Tenor, Horn and Strings.
Sackville-West was born at Cadogan Gardens, London, the elder child and only son of Major-General Charles John Sackville-West, who later became the fourth Baron Sackville, and his first wife, Maud Cecilia, née Bell (1873-1920). He was educated at Eton and Christ Church, Oxford. While at Eton he studied the piano with Irene Scharrer, his housemaster's wife, and became highly proficient, winning the Eton music prize in 1918. His partner Desmond Shawe-Taylor said of him, "not many boys can have played at a school concert the Second Concerto of Rachmaninov. He even contemplated a pianist's career, but was deterred by poor health." At Oxford he made many literary friends, including Maurice Bowra, Roy Harrod and L. P. Hartley, and literature began to rival music as his chief interest. He left Oxford without taking his degree and embarked on a career as a novelist, writing a series of autobiographical novels.
Father Nicholas Sheehy (1728-1766) was an 18th-century Irish Roman Catholic priest who was executed on the charge of accessory to murder. Father Sheehy was a prominent and vocal opponent of the Penal Laws, which disenfranchised and persecuted Catholics in Ireland. His conviction is widely regarded as an act of judicial murder amongst supporters of the Irish rebellion.
Sheehy was hanged at Clonmel on 15 March 1766. Others accused were also convicted for the murder of John Bridge and executed (3 May 1766), including Edmond Sheehy, cousin of the priest, and Ned Meehan, a prominent Catholic farmer who refused to bear witness against Sheehy when offered his liberty in prison. Sheehy was hanged on a scaffold in Clonmel opposite St. Peters and Paul's Church, where there was a plaque to commemorate his death. His head was then severed and stuck on a spike over Clonmel Gaol, as a warning against agrarian violence and remained above the porch at Clonmel jail for ten years.

So disrespectful to use a mausoleum as a shed! Surely they are not allowed to use it for their own purposes? Beautiful plaque and as you say, it is very sad to see it in such a poor condition. I too would have been so tempted to go down into the crypt…

Well, the groundskeepers seem a practical lot, don't they? I can hear it now... "Here's a nice mausoleum to store our kit in. We won't have to drag it 'round in our lorry all the time." There's so much personal history here. Mahalo for showing us, your Hawai'i subscribers, this beautiful place. Aloha to you all.

My Great-great grandparents were Rice from Ireland. They were disowned from the family fortunes when they came to the United States. That's how it was back in the day. Family legend also tells of them fighting with William Wallace. I know it was all Hollywood but I remember the guy in the Braveheart movie that said he came from his island to fight with Wallace and find a bit of truth to that since the family tale goes back 100 plus years as told to me by my Great-grandmother back in the 1960s (she was about 93 at the time). Way before the movie. IDK but would like to find out.

What a glorious setting for such a beautiful graveyard. What a shame about the mausoleum. It really would not take such a lot to restore it to how it was when it was built. SO TERRIBLE about the priest who was executed for his religion and in such a truly BARBARIC way. I do wish that people would respect the religion of others who are not of their faith and let them live in peace. I was MOST interested in the Sackville West grave. In the village of Withyham, East Sussex, England, which is in our part of the world , within the village church is a GLORIOUS tomb to a Sackville West. The tomb is to the thirteen year old son of an English knight of the 17th century. The son died in Italy and his parents had the tomb erected for him. It is all marble and cost about £300. An effigy of the son reclines above the tomb and on one side is the figure of his Father (in armour ) and on the other side a figure of his Mother and they both gaze lovingly , and sadly, at their son. They say that when it rains outside the base of the tomb has the look of it being wet too although it is dry. What I am getting to is do you think the Sackville in the grave in Ireland and the English Sackville's are of the same family ? Sorry for such a lengthy comment !

What a beautiful and peacefull looking area. I would love to sit by that stream and try to catch a fish with no hook just to relax. Too bad the groundskeepers decided a shed cost too much and well they had an open mausoleum to use instead so why not. Shameful actually, it is possibly spilt gasoline and oil seeping down below mixing with the earth and rain making the stench.

Dear Sue We have The Incarnate Word College in San Antonio, TX where I grew up. My sister graduated from there. Catholic College.Lots of nuns from Ireland were here in South Texas, since it's prominently Catholic. My father was a Sheriff's Deputy and at Christmas many times one of the Nuns, who worked at the jail who was from Ireland came to our house. I enjoy your channel because My Dad was a Quigley and My Mother was a Hayes. My great grandfather told me he was from Dublin. When they came to the states they did not marry into Irish families. Which I was told during that time period was risque to do. Perhaps that's where I get my risque ways from. When I was a kid, not so much now. 😂😂😂. Lots of Irish in Pennsylvania and Massachusetts and New York. All the way down in Texas. My Quigleys when they came to America were Coal miners. My Hayes people were fishermen and worked in rock quarries and built some beautiful churches here in the USA. I Love all the history you and Grave Visitations do. Appreciate your channel ❤

A truly beautiful church yard, with an incredible setting, and, like you, I could put up a deckchair there and sit and look out for the whole day. Stunningly beautiful. But .... *What the dickens was that, on the windowsill, inside the Mausoleum* ? Stop the video at 4.30 for the best look at it. It looks like some sort of 'head', with eyes, nose and turned down mouth, complete with a pair of spectacles! If it's a 'sculpted' head - it's not one that you'd normally find inside a Mausoleum! Did either of you notice it when you were inside? (although - the answer is probably not because the smell in there was cancelling out any of your other other senses. lol) Really great video Sue. ~ Cobs (UK) x
