18.10.2017. Saw them live in Zagreb, my hometown. I've been a fan since Lese Majesty came out (saw the KEXP performance), and what can I say...? Best music being made today! Great guys. We talked a bit, and I got my Black Up vinyl signed, the only album I hadn't own up until that point. Fan for life :-D

I love both the new albums so much, (although Lese Majesty is my personal favorite), but these are just absolutely bonkers, batshit brilliant. Best hip-hop group ever IMO.

On first listen I was a bit put off by the inclusion of Deesse du Sang and Neurochem Mixalogue, but that quickly faded and they became two of my favorite tracks. Neurochem in particular.

The intro is nearly unlistenable, but once the beat changes and the vocals come in at the end, it's ight. Still not a great track by any means tho.

Both albums compliment each other just fine but I prefer this one as well. Jealous Machines is very good, I just don't find it to be as compelling as Gangster Stars. Like I wouldn't be able to enjoy Jealous Machines as much without this album.

I think I read somewhere that this was basically assembled from cuts that didn't make Jealous Machines, which blows my mind because I think this is much more cohesive and has the best tracks between the two.

yeah but shabazz albums grow on you. this is dense and multi-layered, it's nothing like "black up" for sure though. I'll see if I agree in a month.

  • @kokakola7369

I think that I understand what he means by characters. I view this album as a "very loose" concept album, similar to "Lese Majesty". I don't think that all of the lyrics on these two albums entirely reflect Ishmael Butler's viewpoints and perspectives. I think that his interpretation is correct. This album at least contains a main character who is trying to find himself within all of the chaos of the "Gangster Star", his home planet. In the second album, the main character fights the jealous machines. I think that the second album is even more loose, psychedelic, and abstract, so it's difficult to figure out what the concept exactly is. It feels like a concept album sometimes though. I'm high right now. I could be spewing out nonsense. Who knows? I would like to hear Andres's interpretation of this album. I have only listened to this album 15-20 times or so lol I kind of forgot about it for a while, quite honestly.
