Japan traditional crafts Aoyama Square

According to an old document found in Nagiso, turnery began in the area sometime during the first half of the 18th century, when unfinished trays and bowls were being sent to Nagoya and Osaka. For this to be the case, lathes must have started turning sometime before.

The skill blows my mind. These men are master craftsmen. How satisfying. The wood cutting saw is so scary next to their u gloved hands.

The original log was huge. I imagine it comes from managed forest . I think there are almost no primary forests anymore in Japan however they succeeded to master the forest management to keep using that wonderful renewable resource that is the wood.
