Sgurr nan Gillean , Am Basteir , Bruach na Frithe - Sep 2020 Nice Sunny day with great exposure

A solo day out on Sgurr nan Gillean, Am Basteir and Bruach na Frithe. Route started from Sligachan then up Sgurr nan Gillean via the Tourist route, a descent via the west ridge and an abseil down Nicholsons Chimney, across to Am Bastier via the bad step, then across to Bruach na Frithe. A descent via the corrie and a wee dip in the clear waters to end a cracking day on the Cuillin. Some excellent sunny weather, dry rocks on the the sunny side and very warm for September. Best in 4k settings. Cheers and thanks for watching.
Some low background music from Bensound.

Summer 2003 I hitched (remember that?) up to Skye on a holiday back from Australia to see my family. I camped near the Sligachan and naively had a crack at Pinnacle ridge, with no gear or idea. I'd done about 100 of the munros prior to emigrating, so how hard could it be, eh. Well, very hard indeed. I downclimbed from the first pinnacle and went for the top via the bealach between Am Basteir and nan Gilean. That was too hard as well, so Am Basteir it was. A hill for the 'young lads', but I'd just turned 40!

great video thanks for sharing, I'm also looking for some information about the climb up am basteir. i have adrians book and it says on it there's a bypass path round it on the lota corrie side is this easy to find?. am fairly confident climbing without rope but don,t want to downclimb it on the way up again will be doing it solo also. any information will be appreciated.

Hi Jamie, thanks for watching the video and feedback. I have used the bypass too on a previous visit. I started a good bit before the bad step. The way was not well marked. there was a wee bit where I felt exposed, the ledges were covered in loose gravel and if these were wet or greasy it would be more hazardous. Add in mist or thick cloud and the risk would be amplified. I was lucky and it was clear, and dry so I could inch along until I got on to a ramp that led round and up to just after the step. On this trip I had decided to abseil as I had carried the rope for the descent from Sgurr nan Gillean anyway, the guys ahead of me allowed me to use their rope at the step which saved some time. Take care when you get there whatever route you chose. ATB Kenny

Excellent video! I don’t suppose you have a GPX route for this route? Tia.
