Xcalibur64 I enjoyed it, too, but I prefer the 2D Genesis games more. In terms of 3D games, I've really only played this, (if you count it as 3D), the Adventure titles, Generations and Lost World. I liked them all except Lost World.

Looking at the comment section, I can certainly say that the Sonic fandom cannot agree on what makes a Sonic game good or even great. Some want the Adventure style gameplay, some want the boost formula from Sonic Unleashed - Sonic Generations, some want the classic 2D formula from the Genesis/MegaDrive games. Heck there are some that play Sonic games just for the story. Because of this, the fanbase is divided into these factions and make it impossible to satisfy the majority of them. And the thing is, when Sonic Team actually makes a good game that caters to a particular style, the other fans have to tell their opinion about it. Some fans are more open-minded and objective in their critique (like SomecallmeJohnny or Clement, but even they have a Classic bias) while some will just blindly hate it for the most stupid reasons (i.e TOO MUCH 2D, Sonic's eyes are GREEN, it's not like Sonic Adventure so it sucks, the story is too cheesy so it sucks). Not all Sonic fans are like this mind you, there are some, albeit few, that actually enjoy a good crafted Sonic game regardless of the gameplay style. But here comes the question. If the fans don't know what they want, how could Sonic Team know?

RodniDemental Now here's the kicker. My first (and favorite) Sonic game is Sonic Generations. Before that, I didn't had any experience with the franchise (outside of Sonic X which was meh) and after completing the game and seeing the credits roll with all blue blur's past games it got me hooked to try the old ones too. So I started from the old Megadrive/Genesis games with the help of emulation (being from Eastern Europe, it's nigh impossible to find a Megadrive/Genesis console, let alone games for it), to the Advance Series (people forget about these awesome games) to the Adventure Series and all the way back to Generations (except Shadow the Hedgehog, Sonic 2006 and the storybook series for obvious reasons and the Wii U games). And guess what, for the most part I had a blast. Gameplay inconsistency aside, the combination between speed, platforming and exploration along with diverse characters, unique stages and memorable soundtrack made me fall in love with this franchise. It has it's flaws (like any other long running game franchise) but I'm willing to take the good with the bad as long as I'm able to have fun with a game. But not everyone is like that, especially in the Sonic fanbase. You have people who blindly love a Sonic game without acknowledging it's flaws ( i.e. Sonic Adventure 2 or Sonic 2) but nitpick on the tinniest of details when it comes to a game out of their comfort zone (i.e. Sonic Colors or even Sonic Generations) to the point that it becomes hypocritical, and rarely do you get to see someone criticizing a Sonic game in an objective and in-depth manner, with ExoParadigmGamer (recommend watching his channel, especially his Sonic ROR reviews), SomecallmeJohnny and other reviewers along with a small number of Sonic fans being the exception. Maybe it's because I don't have any nostalgia for the series, that I'm able to look at this franchise in a more open-minded and objective way. Bottom line, I agree with what you said at the end and I also think that Sonic Team should stick with a particular style and refine it with each game (like they did with Sonic Unleashed - Sonic Generations), instead of trying to satisfy an already whiny, indecisive and unsatisfied fanbase. Other elements like the story, music and aesthetics should be taken into account as well to fit the tone of the game, just don't make it super edgy like Shadow the Hedgehog or super kiddy like Sonic Colors (even though I love this game) but more in line with Sonic Adventure 2 (I love this game's story, plotholes and all) or Sonic Unleashed. Phew... WOW O_O. This is one novel of a KZread comment.

Marius Urucu I appreciate your thoughtful response. Funny you mention ExoParadigmGamer, I actually found SomecallmeJohnny's channel because EPG kept mentioning him. I quite enjoy his thorough approach to reviews, gives a much more fair and MUCH more indepth perspective than say the 2-3 minute crap from IGN these adys where the reviewer has obviously barely even beaten the game in some cases. But I digress. That's cool you got on board after Generations. I have only good things to say about that game really, it truly was a game for the fans based on many of the memorable and favourite parts from older games. And the fact that it's actually a good game means newer players will have fun with it too. I actually don't mind the story of Sonic Colours, but I prefer more along the lines of Sonic Boom (I'm only comparing the 'tone' or 'mood' of Colours to Boom), I'm just saying Colours had a sort of silly approach to the story, came across as a bit kiddy sometimes but I like the fact that Sonic doesn't take things seriously. The relationship between Eggman and Sonic is spot on. It's like an old rivalry where they're just constantly taking the piss and being sarcastic to one another which I prefer to the overly serious approach of even the Adventure titles. I don't mind if they try and make it a bit more 'epic' sometimes perhaps towards the end, but Sonic's never been serious. Or maybe I'm just imposing a preconception I have. lol I agree the Advance and Rush series (including Colours DS) do seem to be underrated and not talked about very often. But then again I think they do have quite a strong following, because there's not too many things to complain about unless it's one of the extra vocal fans that was nitpicking about the momentum not being like the mega drive games or the boost button breaking the spindash or whatever. xD In any case, you probably made a wise choice not to play Shadow/06/Secret Rings before playing the classics because it may have obscured your impression of the series. BUT, I must say, if you do enjoy the series, they can be worth checking out, if not just for historical purposes. I mean those games still have a bit of a cult following. Some people do like them. All of those 'dark age' games seem to have something in common: They tend to look good, to the point where if you watched a player that knew what they were doing, the games might actually look quite fun. They all seem like they have potential. but ultimately were rushed and unfinished because Sega have a really bad track record of forcing developers to meet deadlines at the cost of quality. This has been happening as far back as Sonic 3 where they couldn't meet the deadline so they had to turn it into two games. And it happens almost every 5 years to meet 'anniversary' dates, which was the cases with Sonic Adventure 2, Sonic Genesis and Sonic 06. I'm surprised they seemingly haven't learnt from this as Sonic Boom was clearly not finished. It seems like they should rethink their business models instead of trying to always get in before christmas or hit an anniversary date. It doesn't work in the long run if the game is a failure, I just wish they spent a bit more time in development with Boom, 06, Secret Rings etc. Even games like Adventure 2 could have benefited from a bit more play testing and polish but they got lucky with that one. Haha

I think it was mostly a joke. Madworld was mostly written by Yasumi Matsuno, also known from the Vagrant Story. Happy Tree Friends the series was written by Kenn Navarro and Rhode Montijo. However, looking at the writing credits for Sonic Colours, the writing team is actually completely new. Two guys had indeed been on the MadWorld writing team, one of them wrote the Happy Tree Friends videogame, among a dozen other things he worked on, and one was on Shenmue and Phantasy Star teams. I don't think this is good for any conclusions whatsoever, except that they have indeed picked a team with serious writing experience. These guys are mostly freelancers though, they go from one unrelated project to another. They re-hired this team to write Sonic Generations though.

This comment section is the main reason why I hate talking about Sonic. Nobody can make up their mind on what makes a good Sonic game, and people are antagonized for liking certain games or liking certain games over others. Granted, some people do deserve to be called out because of their rancid behavior (mainly this DarkSonic180 guy I see people talking about, and after reading what he has to say, it's not hard to see why he's being antagonized), but eventually it just gets tiresome. I like Colors over the Adventure games as well, but I still like the Adventure games for what they do right. While both Adventure 1 and Adventure 2 do have their negative traits, if people still end up enjoying the games (like yours truly here), don't see them as idiotic or naive. Oh, and please stop acting like preferring Colors over the Adventure games is some huge confession that needs to be made and that you're going against the law or some bullshit. It's getting old. You like one game over the other regardless of its quality. Why does this need to be some overblown confession?

I hate the Sonic fanbase so much. Every time someone says something like, "Colors is better than Adventure 2." A part of the fanbase attack that person and anyone that agrees with him. Ok, gonna throw my two cents. I prefer a light hearted Sonic over the melodramatic tone Sonic Adventure 2. As someone who has recently played the Adventure games, I kind of agree with Johnny on a lot of what he says. Lot's of people need to understand that SIMPLE does not mean dull and boring. I prefer a simple story with a lot of witty banter that'll make me chuckle. That's not to say that a simple story can't have high stakes. Just look at SA1, it had its light hearted story, a simple plot and a big climax. Have the modern writers rework the dialogue to be more witty when it needs humor and there you go. As for gameplay, I don't care any more. I just want the gameplay to be consistently good

***** Simple does not mean dull and boring, it just means simple. SA 1's is rather simple. Eggman unleashes Chaos, Sonic and friends try to stop him. Simple, yet we still get to find out what happened to Knuckle's people, we have character development for Tails. Throw in a better balance of humor and serious moments and bam, there you go. As for wether a bad story would keep me from replaying a game. Really that depends on the game itself. Many games with bad stories can be saved by excellent gameplay. Just look at Mario and DK: Country. Very simple almost non-existant plots but they are some of the most fun games out there

***** Well that's your tastes. To me, it really depends on the game. Same was as how to you a bad story can bog down a game, to me bad gameplay can make a game suck. It's a GAME, so I want to PLAY and have fun. That's the beauty of video games, they can have both. But some games just don't call for it. I don't need to have some epic story to drive me to stop Bowser as Mario, I just need a good challenge and fun gameplay that'll make me smile. But for a game like, say, and RPG or Metal Gear, then yeah, if the story sucks, then it's not worth playing

***** And as melodramatic as I find SA2's story. It's as dark as I'll accept Sonic to go. Its nowhere near as bad as Shadow the hedgehog's ridiculous attempts at being "dark and edgy". Just would like more of a balance between the colorful humor and the darker undertones. Like a well written kid's cartoon

That reach for the stars theme intro really shows us that sonic can do anything that he chooses to do and nothing will get in his way 10/10 Great in it's own way and really fast and exciting to play

I'll agree that they are both really fun games. I don't know if either of them are truly great, because they do have a good number of problems, Adventure 2 especially. But I still have a lot of fun with both of them.

***** Games don't need a great story to be good. Take minecraft for example. And i'm not a fan of the SA2 plot. Mostly because the plot takes itself too serious. Like Johnny said, this is the story about a super fast blue hedgehog, a fox with two tails and a fat doctor who creates machines. SEGA shouldn't take it serious.

Whenever I hear the beginning reach for the stars I get a huge sense of nostalgia. That was my first ever sonic game and first game I 100%ed

i can believe it was 6 years since i played this game, i have such soft spot for this game. i love pretty much everything about this game. I love the co op, I love the music, I love the stage themes, I love the level design, I love boost system, I love the wisps. i miss when sonic games where as of quality of games like these

Adventure 2 is still better, but I still really enjoy Colors.

love this game through and through. my main problem with it was when sonic and tails told a joke in the cutscenes: remember the expression "you killed the joke?" well that would fit this perfectly. Sonic and tails would tell a joke and then ramble on about the joke and the joke that wasn't even funny to begin with would just become cringey.

Wait. So the people who made Mad World and fucking HAPPY TREE FRIENDS made the story for Sonic Colors? Something is definitely wrong there.

I really want to play colors, so, do you guys know if the game will run on the wii u using the gamepad, or the pro controller or will i need to get a wii controller? And also, i really like the adventure series (mainly adventure DX, is probably my favorite 3d sonic tied with generations), but those games have flaws, mainly adventure 2, i find that the mech sections and the treasure hunting were downgraded from the gama sections and knuckles sections from the first adventure.

It’s weird being recommended this 10 years later

TheBlue Typhoon17 Before, I wanted Sonic Unleashed to be the title that would give sonic a better come back, I also wanted Sonic and the Secret Rings to be that title. Both of those games were pretty Good but they weren't the Best games. I didn't find the Werehog Stage to be that terrible but they were still good. I really did like the Daytime stages, they're the best parts of the game, but there were some flaws in them though.

Getting to 50 rings in Colours is a pain, and most levels are too short for it to be any use. Your first jump is improved so your double jump is gone for some reason. On the upside, you're invincible with unlimited boost, but it only lasts as long as you keep getting rings.

Darksonic180 is a troll. Nearly everywhere I find him, he bashes whatever it is. Such as Mario and Luigi RPG videos. Now I don't mind if people actually like Sonic 06, but if he's gonna be harsh to colors & dream team's plot and such, then it is expected that he'll bash 06's plot. So don't even bother. Hes just a troll.

The 2D sections could stand to be a little less zoomed out. Especially the in the Starlight Carnival boss section where you have to grab rings and wisp capsules that fall out of the boss while avoiding spike balls.

I would have loved the intro song if there was no lyrics. The melody is very catchy (in a video game music sense) but the One direction type pop song just gets me...

Ok, not gonna lie. I got the biggest flippin' smile when he squealed at 11:44 with Super Sonic xD So glad he enjoyed this game though, my fave.

So i watched all of SGB Era Reviews and well their not as bad as i thought but certainly they don't age well the Video Quality is consistently Scuffed but becomes less bad as you progress but some of these ratings 8.5 and 9 for Sonic 4 Ep1 and Sonic Colors respectively especially how much he complained about both those ratings should be lower 4.5 Sonic 4 Ep1 and 7 for Colors. Also the best intro of this Era has to be the one in the Contra Review it's definitely reminds me of the current one. All and all it was a good time.

11:43 This will be my reaction if we get sonic adventure 3 with a playable super sonic like this

Sonic color was the first game I finished in one day. I was really happy to play it when I got it for Christmas.

why spindash when you can just boost? if you could, it would just be a weaker/slower version of the boost.

Sonic colors and sonic cd have both been going through the phase in this franchise where every sonic fan in existence decides to rewrite the quality of the game that was originally conceived as a good game, similar to how people started hating on the adventure titles in the early 2010s when they were respected games in the community beforehand.

*Looks at the various things Colours does right* *Looks towards the various unneeded changes that SA2 made to SA1, and then went on to make an inferior sequel* Yeah, sure. The only thing SA2 ha going for it is the Chao Garden, and the Multiplayer. SA2's story has to be the most overrated in the franchise. It has a few interesting moments, but these are few and far between. Not to mention that the very best parts of the story happen at the start, and then the end. Hell, SA1 had a better story than this. Truth be told. You need more than exposition and character development to craft a good story. There's hardly any humour, there's no sense of an upbeat tone, boring and somewhat forced dialogue, horrific voice acting. Heroes has a far better story than this. Colours isn't perfect, far from it. But it's a much better game than the Adventure games IMO. SA2 doesn't have the worst story, but it's far from the best.

Colours doesn't pander to anyone. Fans told SEGA to actually put some effort into the next game, and they did. Besides, it's a good idea to listen your fan base (especially when it's a part of it that doesn't bitch about everything) There are many storylines in anything Sonic related that beat out SA2 in terms of tone and story telling. The only pandering is in generations, which is clearly fuelled by nostalgia (which isn't a bad thing at all. Even better considering the lack of nostalgic elements in Post Heroes Sonic games) Sonic Rush & Adventure. Sonic Advance series. Sonic Heroes. Sonic OVA Sonic SATAM The list continues.

Sonic Colours was made with one mind-set. "make a good Sonic game" Oh yes. because taking one of the few decent entries in the Sonic series and then crafting a game from it is totally a bad idea *shot* Actually it is. If you ignore you're fan base, then you're doing the exact opposite of what a game is supposed to do, make money. If you don't listen to what fans want, then well what do you think will happen?. Relying on a commentary based on Sonic because you can't think of anything creative to say yourself, oh the irony. From what it seems. You appear to be "fuck 2D, love 3D" whilst flaming Sonic games that are actually worth playing. Nostalgia isn't a bad thing. It goes to show you actually remember you have a fan base. Sa2's story is good. But, it's no where near as good as other fans make it out to be. It's not even entertaining, I found more entertainment in a game with almost no story, in comparison.

Sonic Unleashed was good, much better than anything the 3D title's even bothered trying. I didn't say it did. I said it uses gameplay similar to it, whilst throwing 2D into the mix. So long as you make quality title's, you can. Not listening to the people who keep your series alive by buying your product is a good idea?. It's franchise's like Resident Evil that are falling of the face of the earth, because they never listened to it's fan base after it's 90's career was over. Sonic is in the same position. Instead of sticking with a consistent style of gameplay that people like. Sonic game stick with forceful gimmicks that fans are forced to use in order to play the game. Not to mention fan fiction like stories, pathetic characters, a direction that never worked to begin with, along with the complete demolition of what made Sonic games what they were. It's a wonder as to why SEGA even bothers listening to the likes of you.

So, slowing down to allow for some actual platforming is bad?, who'd of knew?. There are much more sides to the Sonic fan base than that. You've got All-Rounders (me), EPIC PLOTZ, DARK SANWIK (you), Adventure realists, Classic fans, Western fans, it goes on. I'd also like to inform you that not every Classic fan is an idiot. and from what I've seen, the Adventure fan base appears to be much worse, demanding that every Sonic game be 3D, and be structured like the Adventure games. Sega can listen to fans, it only took them so long to do so. Honestly, I feel sorry for Sega, so much to work with.

i agree completely, I love the boost formula but I would like to see some platforming added in, but platforming that was accustomed to sonic's speed in generations, while when you're getting close to the platforming section, the game slows down for a few seconds to show you that the section is coming so you can get ready for it and continue boosting while getting through the challenge

This game is pretty much 10 years old now! Johnny definitely needs to revisit this game and give it a Round 2 review. I just hope there’s not so much backlash as before. (Especially concerning a certain someone.) Sonic Colors is a great game in it’s own right, and it’s actually one of my favorites. It may not be the best Sonic game out there in most cases, and opinions may have changed about this game as years gone by, but this still got positive reception. And plus, it rejuvenated Sonic and brought light at the end of the tunnel! Yeah Unleashed may have done that a bit too because of how fun daytime Sonic was, but Sonic Colors takes what made daytime Sonic so great and made something that doesn’t shove gimmicks in your face. The Wisps just added to the fun and they didn’t feel mandatory most of the time. Story-wise, it’s nothing amazing or groundbreaking. Going back to the classic Sonic vs Dr. Eggman story wasn’t a bad idea in this case though, as this time we don’t get an overly dark story that takes itself way too seriously. Plus, Orbot and Cubot were the perfect comic relief! And I don’t mind the new Sonic voice as it kind of makes him sound older. Still, I think the writing for Sonic does miss its mark. Overall, this is a beautiful game with a kick-ass soundtrack, and it feels very rewearding finding those hidden red rings.

I love the part when he says yes when he sees super sonic. It just made me laugh.

Great review! I think this game is way better than sa2, yes I just said it. COME AT ME FANBOYS! Edit: I'm going to be honest as of now both colors and sa2 are meh to me.

OK seriously I think colors is better than sa2. I won't let other fans cloud my opinion.

lol I agree, this is better than SA2, but I still prefer SA2, know why? CUZ ITS ON PC, srsly, all the sonic games should be on PC, idk WHY they release them only on consoles, I mean, sonic the hedgehog 1, 2, 3 and knuckles were all actually released for PC, and no i dont mean emulators, they were actual PC games, so why stop? ik that they released sonic generations for PC, but still

Zyad Alhayoti Sonic colors is no where near as good as SA2, except that the music is good, and the graphics are gg, other then that, SA2 > colors
