What a great review! I just ordered a Seymour AV F120 in UF2 with the removable masking panels for our new HT. I do not understand why so many people go with Stewart or similar overpriced brands, especially in light controlled theaters.

I totally agree! We have already gotten well over our money's worth on the Proscenium screen in under a year. It is the best sounding and best looking option, not to mention the best value.

Sensible informed and overall great video

I purchased a speaker from you via marketplace and while we were chatting I had mentioned my latest theater build. You told me to check out Seymour Screens and I’m so happy you did. It completely changed how I designed my theater but had to wait to upgrade the screen at the time. My wife the next year gave me a birthday card that simply said “go get that darn screen” and I did. After building three different theater rooms, constantly swapping better speakers, upgrading projectors every couple of years, and progressively getting better receivers it was the Seymour Screen that has truly impressed my friends and family the most. Thank you so much for sharing this brand with me.

@@av_nirvana that’s right. Seymour AV was awesome to work with and gave me some great advice to get my setup to the next level. Ended up with the all Elac system with LCR in-wall behind the maxed out with only inches to spare top and bottom of the acoustically transparent screen. Ended up using the B&W center in the family room but have already purchased some in-wall speakers for the next phase of that room. We like watching things in the theater so much that we turned the family room into a rec room with a pool table (with a huge TV and excellent sound system of course, just without the seating).

Seymour screens are great. I have 132" AT screen and getting a lot of complements on great looks and sounds from invisible speakers.

Awesome video, about time I saw a more detailed look at Seymour screens on KZread. I'm currently building my theater on my channel and have always intended going a Seymour XD DIY 180" screen when ready. Just hoping there'll be no issues getting it to Australia. They did send me samples without mentioning anything so I'm assuming it'll be all good. Thanks again 👍

Awesome video. I am going thru the same.phase of picking out an AT screen. Did you install a black backing on your screen considering thr wall behind is an off white color? Any issues with that?

The screen is mounted on a false wall that is filled with insulation and covered with a layer of landscape fabric, vs a black backing layer. Works just fine.

Great Video. Actually, it helped me a lot making my decision on what screen I am going to get. Previously, I had a dual retractible screen system (16x9 e 1:2.40), which were actioned by the projector depending on the video format being presented. Proscenium is a much better solution for that. I have a question on a different topic: I've seen you have five speakers on your front stage, three of the same model and two of a different one. How are you using those two additional?

Great question. I’m not. Those two extra were placed because I had them on-hand and thought perhaps one day I’d have a second 2-ch turntable setup downstairs. If you check through the channel and look at the NextLevel Acoustics video, you’ll see that none of those Triad speakers are there anymore. Only the new front LCRs are installed now. Also, dual retractable screens is not at all a bad solution, but I love the motorized masking system.

Are you using a control system so that the masking automatically adjusts from the kaleidescape cues?

Not yet. I'm just using the remote included from Seymour. I am expecting I'll probably go with the new Seymour controls they're working on when they're ready.

what would you suggest for speakers behind screen if on a 3k speaker budget

That's a really hard question to answer. It really depends on what type of sound you're looking for, and what form factor you require. What are your current speakers, and what do you like/dislike about them?

Thank you for this quality video. I've received screen samples of XD and UF from Seymour. With the XD having a rating of higher gain and AT properties, I've heard some folks complain they can see the weave of the XD material vs the smoother, yet somewhat lower gain/AT properties of the UF material. Question: you mentioned you're sitting closer to the screen - how far are you sitting from the screen? If you were sitting further away than your current position, would you have opted for the XD material instead? My listening position will be a little over 10ft from the screen. I can't really see the weave material of the XD, but I don't have a projector yet to test it, especially with a white background like a snow scene to really see if the weave is noticeable at a little over 10 ft. Great question, Chris and I have gone back and forth on this. In my last house, I had XD material at 11’, then moved closer to 9.5’. I was still thrilled but Chris came over and kept telling me I could see the weave and needed to go to UF. Then he just brought the material and we swapped it out. It was only after I switched that I thought “well, maybe I was seeing the weave”. I went UF this time at 10’ viewing distance because I was happy with the UF performance and didn’t want to push my luck with XD. But I likely wouldn’t have switched had Chris not “forced me” to switch. 😀

I have both the UF and XD in a blacked-out room and have had extensive time with both. The XD weave is most noticeable on bright scenes, otherwise it's a non-issue. The distance and your attention to detail are going to influence whether or not you see the weave. I believe the XD is best meant for larger screens where you're farther away. The UF with its lower gain is noticeably darker. Hard to go wrong with either but there's a tradeoff with both.

Why o did since my projector is not capable of wide screen I got a bigger 16x9 an to solve that I just got a 1/4 panel cut it tu size install velvet tape glue magnets on the back of the panel so when I watching a movie I snap it to the frame and it looks great

I actually did the same on my previous DIY frame to make it 2:1. Masking makes a huge difference and I’m still a big fan of the wider aspect ratios.

How wide is the room you placed this in? Would be helpful to provide the full w/h dimensions of the entire unit in addition to the w/h dimensions of the projected image for both 2.4:1 and 16:9.

The Seymour screens can be custom ordered down to a fraction of an inch size, so it can be 100% spec’d to fit your exact situation. Mine is the PRH115, which is a 115” wide viewing area and 124.6” diagonal in 2.4:1. This makes screen sizes of 115x57.5 and 101.3x57.5. The frame itself is 122.3"w x 73.0"h x 2.7"d and the wall is 124.5”w x 95.5”h.

@@av_nirvana Thanks for this detail. I've wanted this screen for nearly 18 months and my project is nearing the point where I can order, so I'm trying to maximize size in the width I have, and knew I needed the outer frame dimensions. Great video, super helpful to see if like this.

Call in to Seymour and they’ll make it exactly to your spec. Give them your room size and they’ll make it to fit. You can order off the menu if you call. Every screen is made to order so there’s no up charge for ordering a custom size vs “off the shelf” product - there is no shelf.

Quick question, why you chosen UF vs XD material?

Because my viewing distance was hovering right in that range where the weave pattern of XD may become visible. I've had XD previously in an older theater and it's fantastic, but UF is also a great material, and I have no issues with light output, so using the material with a tighter weave made the most sense.

Did you have to start running your JVC in high lamp when you went from the XD to the UF material? We currently have an XD retractable, but would like to go with a larger screen. I've thought about the UF, but I'm concerned I'll have to run My NZ7 in high laser instead of low or mid like I can with the XD material.

The switch from XD to UF didn’t require high lamp mode, but moving the throw distance to the longest possible when we moved did require the jump.

@@av_nirvana I'm at the wide angle end of the lens so my tradeoff is contrast. Having both the XD and UF samples the weave on the UF is definitely less noticeable, but you can sure see a drop in brightness and a softening of the picture compared to the XD.

Whats the difference between this model vs the Seymour Screen Excellence TRIM?

The biggest difference is that the SSE TRIM screen ships with the frame in four pieces - top, bottom, right and left - with velvet already on, manufactured that way. The Proscenium frame is designed in smaller sections, and the velvet panels must also be attached by the end user. The frame ships with a left section, a right section, and two pieces that attach between them to extend the top and bottom. If you look at the assembly section, you can see how it's packaged. After assembling the frame, you then install two velvet panels on the top and two on the bottom. These smaller pieces allow it to ship much more cost effectively, thereby lowering the overall cost.

I can't recommend it highly enough, and Todd - from our other videos - also has a Seymour Screen, though he has the TRIM model from SSE. I have experience with both, and you can't go wrong with either!

I had no idea that Seymour is in Ames! That's not far from me. Do they have a showroom?

This is really the big debate between CIH and CIW. I'm fully in the Constant Image Height camp. I (again, my opinion) believe that variable aspect ratio movies are a gimmick. For example, Top Gun Maverick was released in Variable Aspect Ratio, so it goes from 2.40 to 1.85. But when it played theatrically, any theater it played in that wasn't IMAX it played at 2.40:1, which tells me there's nothing outside of the 2.40:1 frame that is relevant or necessary. I frame it up as 2.40:1 and I have a mask setting on the JVC projector that will black out any pixels outside of that 2.40:1 image to avoid having it spill above and below the screen. Even without the mask, the velvet borders on the Seymour frame do a great job of absorbing that extra spillover, and my screen wall above & below is also black velvet, so it's not that distracting if I forget to turn on the mask.

Cool. Reviewing screen samples currently. Will inquire to the Proscenium cost vs manual panels.

Just remember, samples are great, but just putting them up side by side and looking doesn't factor into how easy it is to adjust your projector's calibration to the gain. Sure they'll look different. How do they sound? Harder to evaluate with a sample.

@@flyers10az You'll definitely need one of those from that distance. The samples are great for seeing if you'll notice the weave pattern from your distance. Not as effective for evaluating gain.

Sir according to you which screen is the best in terms of both image and sound quality. Is it acoustic woven or perforated screen...

I have a Proscenium screen also. Getting rid of the black bars is a game changer when watching movies.
