    Seymour seems to have more body, less scoop, maybe more bass to my ear, and the DiMarzio less body, more scoop, maybe less bass to my ear in all samples. Both sound real nice. Neither is better than the other. They are just different. Great work. Thanks.

    I love seeing comments where people say one is definitively better than the other when the reality of it is both Seymour Duncan and DiMarzio make great stuff. I have a mixture of both as well as other companies in my axes, although the majority are Duncan's in all honesty lol nice review though.

    This is the best video of a pup demo I've ever seen so far. Straight to the point and straight up comparison. Very nice job you did on this. Imo the SD has less top end bass more treble than the Dimarzio but are a bit louder. The Dimarzio in the gain and lead setting kicked SD's ass. Thanks for the demo. Now I'm off to buy a set of Dimarzio's.

    I love both companies, but I find myself in more of the DiMarzio camp. I have my strat with a JB Jr. which I absolutely love. But I’m personally obsessed with the Steve’s Special and Air Norton bridge/neck combo. It’s a beautiful mix of clean and distortion, the legatos on the Steve’s Special in the bridge are amazing. The pronunciation on the Air Norton even distorted are phenomenal. I just think everyone has their own personal preferences

    Dimarzio always has this "artificial compression" like the coils are wound with thinner wire and the magnets are undercharged to add glassy tones versus Seymour's pickups which sound fat and full. I have played tons of both...ALL is subject to how it feels in your hands and sounds in your head. One guitarist opinion is another argument waiting to happen....

    For cleans the Duncans absolutely destroyed the Evo's but that quickly fades when you enter into the distortion realm. You don't want that fat bass coming out of your pickups. Sure it sounds great when playing through your little amp, but in a band setting and recording setting, you want to avoid that at all cost because you will always end up having to remove it causing an alteration of the tone usually negatively.

    The Dimarzio is warmer and the JB had more bite. They both sound great. Personally I have a Jackson with the JB in the bridge and that guitar sounds incredible on both my Marshall DSL and EVH Stealth. Very versatile pickup from metal to clean sounds.

  • @ClownTrader1
    @ClownTrader16 жыл бұрын

    The Duncan's definately have a bit more upper midrange bite and clarity. And also seem a bit colored by its own character of that bite. But the low note palm muting for rhythm is off the hook. The DiMarzio's seem to be more neutral, a bit darker, and definately smoother sounding. Especially with leads. Velvety. I say: Duncan's for rhythm DiMarzio's for solos

    To my ears the Duncans sound more middy and in-your-face, the Dimarzios are a little more scooped/hi-fi sounding. Evolution has a nasty treble bite that I enjoy but JB has that classic singing nasal upper-mid that cuts through. I think the Duncans would be great for 70s/80s rock and the DImarzios might handle fast high-gain thrashy-prog stuff better where they wouldn't get muddy. If I had to choose a bridge and neck out of these I would probably go for JB bridge and Gravity Storm neck, but they all sound good and in the same ballpark. Thanks for the demo

    I like the SD bridge for rythme but DiM is greater (IMHO) for everything else. More overtones, sustain. In central position much more interesting tone. when it comes to this whole dimarzio vs duncan thing, I've always been a dimarzio fan and have never once played a guitar (knowingly) with duncans and said "yes! that's my sound!"...I think it comes down to note definition...I like the mid range bark and the low end tightness dimos tend to have but that isn't really what I value in a pickup...you can dial that into any decent amp...what you CANT dial in is "can I easily distinguish each note in this wacky, tight interval chord?"...Ive always heard that in my favorite dimarzio models and (in my goofy opinion, at least) it's what separates the good sounding pickups from the professional sounding pickups

    Hi, Ues you can certainly install iluminator on your epiphone pro, I am not sure if you need f Spacing for brridge pickup or not, but simply messure both pickups and see check tehri size with the charts available on Dimarzio's website, also, if you check the pickup profile on Dimarzio's website you can see how much output they have and you can decide hat type of sound you prefer (for instance more highs, or more mids and basses etc...) those charts are very accurate and reliable.

    bob morane Thanks for the kind words :) no I play each time, copy paste doesn't work, even if you apply a small decay it is too similar to the original track, it's not just the difference in time that makes double tracking sound so full it is also dynamic differences.

    I guess I will always come back to this video when I search for new pickups. This time my Charvel Pro Mod from 2011 needs a new bridge humbucker, right now it's an SH-4 but it is way too dark. The guitar itself has lots of mids and bass, maybe due to its full maple neck and the Floyd. Any ideas which pickup could fix that? Versatile sound with focus on 80s Hardrock would be great!

    no its because after you get into higher models that are made for diff types of metal.. they sound about the same.. unless you get a model made for a different type thats alot diff. like i have a s duncan distortion, a dimazio d-activator, emg -hz3, esp lh-150 [ i got to say those bridge 150, are good for a stock.] they sound as good as a jb, or the d activator maybe better, better than a duncan designed hb. I,ve had other though out, stock jacksons ,yahmahas , cheap ibanez, and and the better inv3's,guitar heads, dime buckers etc.. now the dimes have more mid punch that stands out, and invaders too, and passive emg,s have a slightly diff sound,but all the other arent far apart, its about the amp, distortion pedals and settings, get a chep humbucker and play it on a good amp then a higher up model and you,ll see. hope you could read this rant, didnt put much in2 it grammer wise

    I like them both. The Duncans seem to have a bit more presence on lead and more crunch on rhythm. But that comes with too much muddiness. I've noticed the same traits in my guitar with SD Hot Rodded Humbucker set. I may go with Dimarzio in my current build.

    Great video. Both sets sound good. I know that you weren't doing an apples to apples comparison but... the Dimarzio Air Classic neck DP191 and something like a AT-1 DP224, Norton DP160 or Tone Zone DP155 in the bridge would have been a closer comparison. My absolute favorite all round pup is a Norton DP160. Because it isn't too overwound (12k) and still has strong magnets it more open sounding than all these overwound pups. It is very dynamic, punchy and clear. I was a SD fan for the longest and still love their pups. I have one serious hang up that erks me on SD pups and it's that their logo is on the coil. That ticks me off because they sure don't pay me to advertise and they aren't any cheaper. I started buying Dimarzio pups after I heard a set of Area Vintage noiseless pups. Got some Injector neck/67/injector bridge in a strat. I get more compliments and questions on that combo then ever. got an Air classic and Norton in an Ibanez and Area Hot T bridge in an esquire tele. In this video I will have to say the SDs got lost in the mix a bit and when compared sounded a little muddy. The Dimarzio pups were more defined and cut better. Not considering the billboard SD name on the coils, I'll take the Dimarzio pups.

    Digging up an old one, but what wood is that ESP made out of? Is it mahogany? I have a Schecter that I'm about to dump the actives and go passive, so I've been reading up on different pups. Read a few times that the JBs can make a mahogany rig sound muddy.

    Kraig Hawkins the body is Alder with Ebony fingerboard. But in my opinion, wood either doesn’t affect the tone or it’s too insignificant, I am aware that tone wood is a controversial topic, but since you raised your concern, I thought I share my personal opinion.

  • @AydinZahedi

    @AydinZahedi

    Harald Geersen I have never used APH II, depends on what you want, if you go yo DiMarzio and SD website they the output charts and characteristics of the pickups you can compare them, they are very accurate. Changing a pickup is no biggy, I’d say if you want something different change it, worse case scenario you don’t like it so you take it out and sell it.

    sounds like there's a lot of good guitar players on here that know what they're talking about I don't have Seymour Dukan guitar pickups because the guitar I'm playing right now has its own pickups in it it's called a switch personally when I played Seymour Dukan I like the low tone it seemed to resonate better it carried the town a lot longer I found that Seymour Dukan have a lot of punch and drive but don't carry the tongue long they do sound good in a Solo and are good for Rock maybe some blues but I like that Low Smash and grind I like Seymour Duke I like emg I like humbucker and sometimes it's just the guitar and it surprises me always like it when there's a really good match playing guitar and different guitars sometimes it's like experiencing a car you haven't driven before didn't know if you would like it and then think I'll get one one day 😉😀. Good playing

  • @MYdjANDkaraoke

    @MYdjANDkaraoke

    7 жыл бұрын

    Yeah but some people call that being too muddy or dark, and the thinner they say is tone lol. I heard the same, in my guitars that are not Gibson or Fender PUPs, I only have after market duncans in so I'm a bit biased. I own a few Ibanez though which have Dimarzio PUPs so when he started playing the heavier sounds I was like... oh, sounds like my Ibanez. Honestly all major brand PUPs are excellent, you just need to find the one that you like. But who has 270 bucks to keep replacing them to find out? My general rule, fender sound just get Fender PUPs, same with Gibson. Dimarzio for harder rock and metal and Duncans for a fatter mellower in between a Gibson and a Dimarzio sound. EMG is a whole other beast, buckers clean clear distortion but lacking some bass. My EMG David Gilmour SSS setup is bright and sounds like what a fender should, minus a bit of twang.

    I've been playing guitar for almost forty years and I saw Duncan eclipse DiMarzio way back in the 80s. L.A. was the guitar capital of the world. The metal shred scene was in full force and I was a part of it for a good six years. You could say Duncan had a home court advantage as they started in L.A., but that doesn't explain the whole of it. What happened is more and more players started requesting Duncans over DiMarzios. Both companies had some big endorsers, but when it came down to it, Duncans were a lot more versatile and usable. The most popular Duncan was the JB, of course. But then the Custom and Distortion were also very popular. DiMarzio had their old standby from the early 70s, the Super Distortion. While the Super D is a good pup, DiMarzio's approach of designing ridiculously high output pups like the X2N did not keep up with the times, for amps were being designed with more and more gain on tap as the market demanded. What sounds better with a high gain amp, a Super Distortion, which is basically pissing in the wind and making mud, or a JB, which not only also has substantial output but a much more even EQ and greater clarity for harmonics? The JB won this battle, hands down. Yes, Duncan also has made some very high output pups, but they are not as well known for the Invader as the JB or Custom. The Duncan Distortion is a very worthy opponent to DiMarzio's Super Distortion, Super 2 and Super 3. It positively crushes them. No competition. While it's too high output for my taste, it's still a great pup for metal. My favorite Duncans these days are the Custom Custom; Custom 5; standard ceramic Custom; 59/Custom Hybrid; Full Shred; and Screamin' Demon. I have them in many of my guitars and they make them all sound a lot better.
