Seychelles used to be a famous offshore tax haven! Actually, when I first got into this business Seychelles was one of the most popular countries for offshore company formation & banking.
Where does Seychelles stand today, and what may be some opportunities in this paradise?
Seychelles used to have IBCs as a popular form for offshore companies - short for International Business Companies. These companies were popular for a variety of reasons.
First one, clearly being zero tax. Second had to do with very low costs of setting up and operating. On top of this they provided good secrecy.
However, as the global situation changed and developed countries started cracking down on tax havens it become tougher and tougher. All of the sudden you were in a situation where you can't get banking for your offshore company and the structure became useless.
So, if you can't form a functional offshore company, what CAN you do in Seychelles?
From my perspective, this country may be interesting for residency and citizenship.
It is not that difficult to obtain residency in Seychelles, and after 5 years of having a residency you can apply for their citizenship! Seychelles doesn't have citizenship by investment program, so you would need to wait for 5 years before you can apply for their citizenship by naturalization.
Their passport is pretty decent - it offers visa free access to China, Russia, the UK and the whole Schengen zone. You can also visit New Zealand visa free, which is quite cool.
In order to maintain your residency in Seychelles you'd need to spend only 5 days per year in the country - which is great!
Another thing that I may consider regarding Seychelles is buying property. Even though there are some restrictions around foreigners buying property it is still doable, and I personally believe it to be a good investment opportunity.
Who are we and what do we do?
We are Offshore Citizen team. We help people become global: get a second passport, set up a second residency, pay less taxes, do banking abroad, etc.

Is the POD business operating via a third-party company like a teespring that pays a royalty to the designer, or is if a company operating via it's own online store contracting with an independent printer to print & ship, or a combination of the two? It can make a difference. In the royalty model, then tax treaties will matter in terms of who is doing the paying and where you are living when you are being paid. I mean only a few countries get really favorable tax treatment for KZread royalty payments withholding for example because the US tax treaty network is not very forgiving. If you are using a third-party printer then where you can get banking for the company becomes a bigger concern in terms of structuring.

This is a complex question because substance matters. You can't just sit in UK doing everything and create some structure to pay no tax. You actually need foreign substance to comply with UK rules. The best is to send us a message and we can discuss specifics as they apply to you.

The UAE is probably the easiest, though not cheapest place to establish residence that is exceptionally tax friendly with an extensive double tax treaty network including South Africa. I mean if you can spend 183 days a year in UAE you are tax resident there and you can get a residency permit by establishing a free zone company there which is a zero tax company for the next 50 years. The personal income tax rate is zero and they have excellent connectivity to Europe, Asia, and Africa. Probably the easiest country to get residency that is cheap and can be tax friendly to a solo entrepreneur at least under a certain income is the Republic of Georgia. Establishing a company there is a good way to obtain residency. For under around $160k USD in turnover a year the tax rate is 1% for a sole proprietor. Severing your ties to South Africa is probably the most important part of your tax planning involving South Africa. Get rid of a permanent home, get rid of any vehicle registered in the country, don't have so much as a PO box left in your name in the country. Don't spend more than 30 days a year there, and probably zero for several years. More importantly take care of the paperwork with SARS to end your tax residence in South Africa.

From your question of "it not taking 5 years to attain" it sounds like you're asking about citizenship? If so almost all countries take 5 years or more to get citizenship unless you do so by donation. You can check out our video on fastest citizenships for a few exceptions, though they generally have their own trade offs.

Hello everybody!Thank you very much for this video! If among you does someone who lives on Seychelles and knows about actually cost of buying lands and cost of construction works at the islands, who be so kind to answering for my few questions about it.First of all I heard that they're have rules restrict purchasing of property for foreigners. Is there differens between cost of land for local people (with citizenship) and for foreigners without it? There are a lot of lots and advertising with high priced villas, for an example for 2.000.000 usd.I understand that these offers oriented on foreigners with tug wallets.Ok.The question number two) What will do a common Seychelles citizen that he want to live in a new house?Does he takes a loan? How much in average? How much does it cost? For an example a new land plot(800 square meters) + tiny house(2 bedrooms 50-110 metters total that have engineering systems such as,electrishion ,water supply and waste water dump, ready for move in?(without furniture) May be I can't use Googling correctly, but I can't find some "huge" internet site with significant amount of property for sale especially for locals.Does it exist or not?Thank you a lot for your advices)

Citizenship with 5 days residence in 5 years? This is completely incorrect. Where do you get this from? As found in the Citizenship Act 2013 Part 2 Section 5.1.3 " has been a legal resident for an aggregate period of 15 years or more or permanent resident for a period of 10 years immediately before making an application, and has been physically present in Seychelles for an aggregate period of at least 13 years" No chance of citizenship without living in the country. Someone married for 10 years, of which 5 are residents in Seychelles is possible, or graduates in Seychelles can apply if they obtain PR after 5 years.

We never said that. In order to keep residency one needs to spend at least 5 days per year in the country. This will never lead to citizenship of course! One will just be a resident this way. In order to qualify for citizenship one needs to actually reside in the country for years. How many years will depend on their circumstances.

@@OffshoreCitizen 03:08 "but it's not that difficult to get citizenship. It's about five years of maintaining residency. It's not that difficult to get residency here, you can can get permanent residency as well" 04:03 "it only takes five days a year to maintain residency." Putting two and two together from your video = five days a year for five years = eligible to apply for citizenship. It is very misleading if anything. I agree Seychelles is a great place for residency. But from my research I would say it one of the toughest countries to get citizenship as a foreigner. 2021, Parliament included new laws to be adopted which would further make it more difficult.
