Thanks for the great vid @Tayo ... I have fond memories of the Seychelles as my wife and I went there for our honeymoon almost a decade ago ... I have never seen another island so beautiful like the Seychelles ... Our host family was just amazing and we have kept in touch to this day (Check Au Fond De Mer View Self Catering Apartment in Anse Royale) ... The warmth and culture of the Seychellois people will never leave my memory ... I look forward to going back with the kids sometimes in the near future :-)
This is the kind of content we signed up for. Thanks for sharing your objective views.
I visited Seychelles from Nigeria in 2018 and stayed at Mahe but also spent time at La Digue and Praslin. It was lovely but I totally relate to this video. I felt a bit unwelcome starting from the Airport. I was especially upset when the black seychellois Immigration officer allowed everyone to pass through but stopped my new bride's bag to have it searched, without any good explanation. Not the best way to start a honeymoon. However, our rented villa and hosts were lovely and very accomodating. By day 2, ee ditched the exorbitant taxis and paid pennies for buses which allowed us to experience the real Seychelles
I really hate how if a country is “not black enough” or “too advanced” or “too exotic” it’s seen as not part of Africa even though geographically they are part of the continent. Such as countries like Egypt, Seychelles, Mauritius, Cape Verde etc. It’s so annoying because Africa is such a diverse continent but non-Africans perpetuate this monolithic image of “What Africa is” , So when there are countries that are different from what Africa is perceived like they are subconsciously dissociated from the rest of the continent. *ETA*: Oh my goodness! Some of you have completely missed the point so let me clarify. I am not trying to claim Arabs, white South Africans and Indians as Africans! What I’m saying is that as long as a country is geographically part of the African continent it IS AN AFRICAN COUNTRY! Whether the people that inhabit there identify as African or not. Egypt is a country in the North of Africa. Seychelles is a country right off the coast of East Africa. Cape Verde is a country right off the coast of West Africa! So Africans and those of African descent explore the beautiful continent of Africa and all of its diversity (the islands, the deserts in North and Southern Africa etc. ) . Don’t let the locals or the muzungus make you feel like you shouldn’t be there.
@WillieFungo
2 жыл бұрын
Seychelles and Cape Verde are very much part of "Africa". They are mixed, but retain a lot of similarities with the rest of the continent. Mauritius (excluding the creole island of Rodrigues) and lower Egypt have very little to do with the rest of Africa and should be considered fundamentally different places more similar to the Middle East and India. I don't know why some people use geography to water down the shared identity of equatorial Africa. People are not a landmass. People are shared history, genetics and culture. That's why Europeans don't call themselves "Eurasians" because they share a landmass with Asia. Unlike you, they value their unique identity.

@@WillieFungo Africa is a continent. There are other people from other parts of the world who made USA their home and are called Americans. I think Tayo would be culture shocked if he stepped in most of the northern African countries where often the majority of the population are not black. I enjoyed the video but I found that part a little off putting.

I agree with everything you said! I just came back from Seychelles not too long ago and said similar things on my vlog and people said to come check yours out. The Europeans gave us all kinds of attitude and dirty looks, the service from the hotel was mediocre, food was OK & it's VERY expensive! It's a beautiful country nonetheless. Would I go back? Have lived and worked in The Seychelles and I can say that its really amazing to live in this Island. amazing people ,culture and the temperatures as well as the weather. you leave Victoria raining reaching providence its scorching sun. you want first hand experience don't come for two days, come for a whole month and get what's right. yea it could be expensive but what do you expect from a nation worth 100k people which imports every commodity including biscuit.
Finally the video I've been waiting for. Been thinking of going to either Seychelles or Cape Verde next year. Already watched your Cape Verde video and was hoping you could do Seychelles as well in order to compare. Thankfully, this video did justice to it for me
I enjoyed watching this video and as a seychellois I agree that the cost of living is very high for both tourists and locals, the only difference that we're used to it so I can imagine how shocking it is for foreigners especially the differences in quality and value for your money. I apologize that you had to experience Coral Strand, a hotel that even locals tend to avoid because of the crappy service and it's sad to admit that crappy service is a constant thing in Seychelles 🙃 But I hope that despite the fact that its very expensive here, that you were able to enjoy your time here at least 😊

Awesome review. I think you got most things right from a tourist perspective. To get the culture you have to get on the back roads. My spouse is from Mahe. Excellent video. I appreciate your honesty.
Wow, I’m sold. This place is absolutely gorgeous 🥰
Seychelles appears to have identity issues. For example, when the native gentleman described "Kreol", he conveniently forgot African as a part of the mixture along with Indian Asian, and European. The natives don't mention their African heritage and when this is left out, they will treat those that they view as being more African very poorly. I had this island on my bucket list however it may be removed.

Having been to Seychelles, i can say they don't consider themselves as Africans. Asides the proximity to the continent, i think they are more Indian than African. As for the visit, they have a good vibe but expensive which is not really a bad thing. For the food, try the Beau Vallon beach as the hotel food comes out bland for an African.

Mauritius is like Seychelles but way better with a lot of proud, friendly & prosperous black people & the weather is amazing... Trust me!!!

@@djb.8507 I give you a practical example. While at La Digue on the Island Hopping trip, part of the buffet served was a certain beans variety which i saw there for the first time. In order to encourage me to eat it, the lady (a Seychellois) said to me: "I know you eat that in Africa cause i have been to Africa and i ate it there too." That statement got me wondering where we were at the moment. These are valid experiences as most of your people don't easily identify as Africans which is okay. Going through every comment to nullify or argue peoples experiences isn't necessary. You can do that when it is a perception but saying people did not experience what they did is not a good fight. On a good side, the racism stuff does not exist. We discovered Beau Vallon food on day 3 of our 5 day trip and we ate there every single day till we left. Got some takeaway too. The food was irresistible. Best shrimps i ever tasted. The island is a bubbling and youthful one. The immigration staff on our departure was probably in her early 20s. Unheard of in my country Nigeria. Your Island hosted the exiled Ghanaian Kumasi royalty before he returned home. I observed the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) has a branch there which says a lot about the Nigerian presence there. Also met 2 basketball players who ply their trade there. So yeah, the blacks are on ground. Just that on the tourism experience side, you have more Europeans than Africans trooping in which explains Tayo's experience. That is valid.
Whatever people say Seychelles 🇸🇨👏🏼👌🏼👏🏼 is amazing ❤️❤️❤️❤️

I've often dreamed of visiting the Seychelles! Thank you for this great video! 🥰❤️
Instead of staying in the hotel, use air b and b for an apartment, it's cheaper
Great content as always Tayo! It would be nice though if you gave us some tips as to how to fly to these places (including costs), especially because of the pandemic.
