I am so glad I recently found your channel. During this COVID epidemic I have discovered KZread and find enjoyment, inspiration and education in everything I used to do. I retired in 2014 because there was never enough time or energy to enjoy my many hobbies and I wanted to spend more time with my husband. Unfortunately, he had been diagnosed with lung cancer prior to my retiring, and years of dread, sadness and anxiety followed us as his cancer went into remission and recurrence. After several surgeries and treatments, he passed away 2-1/2 years ago. My love of art kept me sane during those trying years, but I had lost a lot of enthusiasm in my other hobbies. Now I am rediscovering my joy in sewing and am converting half of my family room into my sewing area. Watching you and a few others on KZread sew and seeing your sewing space renews my spirit. Your calm and cheerful personality is a God-send! Thank you❣️

I also find you to be my sewing and life blessing. Thank you, Viv, and may God bless you and your wonderful family.

I like that you keep your Mom’s pin cushion where you will see it once and a while. I keep a few things from the women in my family around - a spoon in with the other spoons, old spools of thread in with my thread, button boxes etc. Feels encouraging...like they are cheering me on

Hi TINA, thanks for coming over!😄 I am lucky that my husband doesn’t mind in the least. I think what he might mind (and he’s a super laid back sort) is the Fabric Creep. Heck, I mind it! But then I think of how much fun it is to acquire fabric and scheme up new projects for it, and I forgive myself. lol. I want my daughter to paint me a colorful picture that says Dining Room Seamstress in the center. Thought it would be cute - but I’m out of wall space!

Love the tour!! New ideas for storage and organization. I’m feeling a bit under the weather today but watching your show is perking me up!🩵🧡🩷 Thank you !

I am in awe of your fabric towers. My husband thinks I'm a little crazy about fabric. Well, I'm showing him this video. People who don't sew, just do not understand what it is like to find a well made, gorgeous piece of fabric. I worked in a fabric store when I was 20. I was just supporting my habit.

Hi Debbie, you can tell your husband that I’ve moved in two more towers - they’re not glass, they’re white and even taller. It’s getting nuts. And you’re so right about folks not quite understanding. I think as artists (because we create from raw materials, pardon the pun) we can see the fabric morphing into something wearable and perfect. Or, we just love the dang fabric.😂

Just found your podcast a week ago - and have gone back to watch all the old ones! Thanks for sharing your sewing and your sewing space with us. I have sewed my own clothing (some of it, anyway) all my life and its such FUN! I'd love it if you'd give us some insight into how you choose sizes and get things to fit you. The bane of my sewing existence. Too big, too small.....

That is such a skill and accomplishment!!👏👏I had long breaks (years long) where I didn’t sew anything. Then I picked up a pattern two years ago and made a dress and just sort of flipped for sewing again! It helps now that I have the luxury of time; my youngest is a senior in high school. I am having a lot of fun with the channel but I am new at this, and I bet you could tell!! I would love to talk about fitting in an upcoming video - great idea. I understand how that happens, Dee! Those fabric towers? I started with two and thought that would be “more than enough” space for fabric. Then I went to three. Then, lo and behold, I needed 4. Good grief!! I absolutely can’t get a 5th, I have a severe mandate (imposed by myself.) Why do all things sewing make us so happy?? All I know is that I’m thrilled there’s a whole community of great people who share this passion.😄Thank you for your sweet comments.💕

Oh my, we sewers sure do live in a parallel universe. Loved the tour of your She Sews Space. When my husband retired his man cave, I immediately set up shop and moved in a huge old dinning table where the pool table was, installed some great lighting over the table , brought in my sewing table, machine and all the misc. A whole lotta sewing going on there now...Thanks for your fabulous shares here on your channel. Love it. !

oh my goodness! I love this. My grandmother could look at anything, and sew an exact duplicate. I can sew curtains, pillowcases, simple things. When I see fabric, I almost drool with pleasure! And I never knew WHY!!! What is it about patterns make me feel this way? I crave to sew, yet I sew HORRIBLY. I know YT probably has lessons..also, the Industry Guide to Sewing that you showed, I will print that out. I haven't sewn in years and years, but my love for sewing, for fabric, my grandmothers genes....your videos....I'm gonna try it. And WEAR what I sew!!! You have challenged me at 67, to do this!! Thank you!! I know I can do it!

Thanks so much, Susan! Limited space calls for a bit more angling and fitting in. But it can be done! I’m fortunate to have the big kitchen table for cutting. Barring that, there is always the floor!😄👍 I’m glad you like the little needle tree, I love that thing. I always know where my hand needles are and I somehow feel the silk helps keep the points sharp. (That may be pure fluff speculation but it sounds good.) You’re so nice to compliment Candace’s work - of course I think she’s a marvel but I’m her mom.😄 I love the little old pincushion too, even though I don’t use it. Can’t seem to part with it. It’s special to think of people we know who sewed. I even think of my 7th grade home ec teacher - she was kind of an overwhelmed woman but who could blame her with a class full of 13 year olds?! We sewed a stuffed animal and I recall her going from sewing machine to sewing machine, helping us. I’m sure she started many on the path to a love for sewing.

I’m not sure where that comes from, but I do know it helps to cheer me. Thanks for liking the mish-mash that is my pattern storage system! High praise to hear you call it genius!🌸😄 I like the surprise element of pattern searching. And the word “passionate” that you chose is spot on. Who knew I would fall so hard for sewing while in my 50’s?! It certainly never lighted me up like this before. Maybe with the children growing up and leaving home, sewing gives me a purpose in the midst of bittersweet change. I really think that’s it!

Hi Holly, thanks so much for writing.🌸I always have to do a major vacuuming after every project. I like proximity to the kitchen, too, for all the wrong reasons, starting with M&Ms.😄 We who have long suffering husbands are very fortunate. They must realize that this is one hobby that is no passing fancy. Although I don’t think my husband will ever fully understand my fabric addiction.😂

Love it ! The boxes with patterns I totally get random is better because I never know what I fancy making till I start looking through and it catches my eye :) really like that needle tree might have to pinch that idea lol . So nice to know I am not alone in the just random looking and reading the patterns like books . Lovely space thanks for sharing

The little needle tree is a favorite of mine - no more searching for hand needles. I forget where I put things in record time...I look down and it’s gone! What the heck!! My organization is helped considerably by the fabric cabinets and the set of drawers. Eternal vigilance to keep the sewing room clean! I have to vacuum after every project. I’m glad you relate to the left-side-of-the-table space being kept clear.😄

Just watched your sewing room studio. I've decided, when I grow up, I wanna be just like you when it comes to organization. Love everything you did to organize your fabrics, notions, patterns and especially your fabrics. The way they're arranged makes it easy to see them and to keep them dust free, especially after washing. Lastly, the top you're wearing, you need to make it again. Next time, buy a roll of 'tear away' and a roll of 'cut away' stabilizer to use underneath the fashion fabric when embroidering. Instructions come with each to help you decide which to use on your project. Happy sewing.

I’m going to try and shop just once for fabric in 2019, next July when we travel to Fabric Mart again. So I have 1 day to place my orders! Happy New Year!🎊🎉

Oh gosh, you’re so nice, Marsha!💕Thank you for such a sweet comment and for even liking my wobbly neckline. It’s pretty funny! A testament to not knowing very much at that point in the sewing journey. Knits were brand new to me, I bought an awful cotton jersey with zero recovery and then busted out my embroidery stitches having never used them before. Fearless? Or just plain nuts...

That was so much fun to see! Thank you! Your space is well organized, functioinal and inviting. And I love that it's in the center of things!

Hi Mary - yes it’s all out there for anyone to see!😃My neighbor doesn’t like all the fabric, she said it would make her feel nervous. I can respect that but I am also grateful that we are all different. The fabric makes me happy. I love going into “the studio” after dinner and just gazing at it, scheming my next design. I’m finding, too, that making Plans videos helps me even though I thought I’d hate it. (However, that little stack of waiting-to-be-made projects staring at me can bug, lol.) Thank you for being so generous and writing!🌸💕

Oh, what a wonderful sewing area! I watch you all the time but this one caught my attention & really enjoyed seeing how you organize your things. I think I now know why storing my patterns in drawers don't really work for me!! But I can slide my chair to where they are & look through, so I'm not giving up on it yet. I'm just getting to the point of putting my sewing room together. (I was waiting on workmen after a move). Currently though, the room still has my chop saw set up for cutting & racks with tools, boxes of stuff, now new counters for the kitchen. I actually did set up one sewing machine & have done some pants revising (hems & such); not my idea of "real sewing"! Baby steps! My daughter helped me put up my big 3 mirror cabinet last week (normally for a bathroom, but over my dressing table) Weird to look in it & not only see my sewing table & machine but a woodworking shop!! Not sure I want wood chips mixed with thread & fabric scraps!!

Watching your videos and listening to your comments makes me happy. Thanks for sharing your love of sewing.

Hi Gemma👋, glad you enjoyed this! Of course, now my fabric supply has burst right out of the glass towers. I have stuffed a bunch into the hutch but it doesn’t store a lot. What I need to do is get things under control!! Use up what’s in the towers and properly store my latest acquisitions...ahem...this has turned into just the teensiest problem😂I have new fabric and patterns to share. Of course.👍

Thank you for pointing me to this video! I just love the joy you have in this space. I have those kitten head buttons, I could not resist them (I wasn't even sewing much back then, and only by hand), and that navy blue with the white floral fabric you got in the shot towards the end of the fabric tour has a sibling in my fabric stash. I am kicking myself for not getting more yardage. I think my most favorite idea I may steal from you (with credit to you of course!) is the needle tree. I am always looking for my hand needles, and like to have an assortment of types and sizes at the ready as I embroider and do other textile crafts. I can't wait to hit the dollar tree and see if any of their flowers are acceptable to handle the load..or maybe make one of my own.. with scraps.. oh!... I adore the personal touches, your child's art (really nice too, I hope they still do artsy things) and your mother's pincushion. Seems there is too much to keep naming and this is turning into a bit more of a comment than would be appropriate LOL. Really, a fantastic space and thank you for sharing so much of yourself with us.

I want a Needle Tree!!! Lovely! I am sure the family loves to see you sitting in your chair looking at your patterns. I would expect it makes them smile to think of you sitting there; in fact, I'm sure they will always know where to find you!!! There is a lot of logic to your set up. I only have a plastic office box. In it, I have all my treasures. However, I have a junk bin too, but it's an office drawer organizer with lots of little compartments. I stock it with what I need for the project I'm working on so I don't lose anything. Believe me, I can lose something that was just in my hand two seconds ago. Love your notebook!

Oh hon, I laughed at losing something that was in your hand two seconds ago. That is me all the way!! I set a needle down and then can’t find it when I look again. What the heck!! I blame little sewing gremlins - they’re out and about and must be conquered.😂 Yes my family definitely knows where to find me! That was fun! I really enjoy seeing how other people organize their sewing supplies. I think your pattern storage is ingenious. You really can learn a lot from reading some pattern instructions and having your patterns so portable is invaluable. One suggestion you might consider is getting a wooden mug tree for your scissors. I saw that suggestion online about 5 years ago and found one at the thrift store. It works so well; I absolutely love it! I really didn’t realize how disorganized my sewing area had become until I couldn’t find my snap pliers a few weeks ago. I turned everything upside down and inside out and still couldn’t find them. When we didn’t have power, I decided to spend some more time looking for my pliers again and took the time to reorganize and clean at the same time. Still no pliers, but things look so much better! I went to Hobby Lobby, and the pliers I wanted were sold out. Clearly I’m supposed to continue using buttons and buttonholes. My lovely snaps will have to wait. Oh, you really have me intrigued now about your cat. Hopefully you won’t keep us in suspense for too long. :)

What a cute idea for the scissors - thanks Nadine! 👍I just have cheap scissors because I like to have them everywhere. Sorry you couldn’t find those darn snap pliers, but you got a clean sewing space because of their disappearance! The silver lining!😄Thanks for liking my pattern storage, I figured most people would skip over it because it’s really organized disorganization, lol. And if I keep filling the “new” boxes I’m not going to be able to fill all the “sewn” boxes - I’ll run out of time! Of course that never stops me from buying more patterns, more fabric. My cat Zig is shy and hates having his picture taken but I do want him to make an appearance. He’s so special to me. He’s beautiful, and he gets me. Every so often a special cat comes along - well this one is off the charts. He’s 14 now and I cannot stomach the thought of life without him, so I thank him every day that he’s here.❤️ Thank you for writing and always being such a cheerful and helpful presence on the channel. xo.

Over the years I’ve collected a number of scissors myself, but I really need to find a good sharpening service to have them all sharpened. The fabric stores used to have someone come in a couple of times a year to offer this service, but I haven’t seen anybody do that in ages and ages. I’ve known many people whose cats have lived into their 20’s; hopefully, Zig will be one of the blessed ones and be with you for many years to come. Our last cat could only be described as a CHARACTER! When Choco was only a few months old, my daughter had a birthday party, and he was passed around like a party favor. Looking back I can’t help but think all the attention went straight to his head because he grew to have a very high opinion of himself. When he wasn’t getting what he wanted he had this cry that would peel paint off the wall. He was the most adorable Siamese with beautiful blue eyes, and I won’t lie we all spoiled him rotten. We had a lunge whip with a toy attached to the end, and my husband, especially, would enjoy whooshing it around the living room, so Choco could chase it and would often do back flips trying to catch it. My daughter would even walk him on a harness and leash when we went on vacation. We were all crushed when we lost him; but in a way the sense of loss was a testament to the wonderful relationship we had with him. I hope you are blessed with many more years to come enjoying Zig. Hopefully he’ll get over his shyness enough for us to get at least a quick glimpse of him.

Two things - I’ve seen Joann post notices about a scissor sharpener visiting the store. Maybe if you have a Joann around you could check? Also: Choco!! Sounds like a character and what a beloved member of the family. Passed around at a birthday party!! What a great image. And the cry that could peel paint off walls - Zig is not Siamese but we HEARD him before we saw him. He was just a little thing about 6 months old when he was positively screaming on the sidewalk in front of our house. This was in 2005. We had never laid eyes on him before and walked up and down our street asking if anyone had lost him. Nope. So we took him to the vet and she confirmed a broken hip, advised us to let it heal because it was a clean break. He had a funny way of walking and we dubbed him Zig Zag, but he prefers the shorter Zig. I think rescue animals never stop thanking you. Trix was a dramatic rescue plucked from a busy highway. My son literally ran over him doing 80 (ahem) - the wheels on either side of this bitty kitten. Graham circled back and there he was, almost being blown along on the shoulder by the 18 wheelers. He weighed 1 pound. But Trix really does have PTSD and can’t seem to calm himself, whereas Zig has a kingly presence (he merely tolerates Trix.) oh gosh I love CATS. Thank you for sharing your story of Choco, I can imagine how crushed your family was to lose him but you’re right: he gave you so much happiness and we’d be far worse off without having known them.♥️

I’m just getting to this video, and I can’t thank you enough for sharing this. You are such a prolific sewer that I find seeing how you organize to be very helpful. One of your most helpful tips has been that you don’t hang on to scraps and bits and pieces that seem to just accumulate and never get used. After starting that for myself, I feel free of unused clutter.

Heeeheee, today I watched your two sewing room tours! Lovely, lovely, lovely! What changes you have made! Incredible! The needle bouquet is genius! The fabric towers are too! I sure like the color change, amazing! Thank you so very much for sharing! Prior to COVID,I would have moved my sewing center to the dining room... but we use it now for so many many distractions. Our kitchen is not large enough for a table. But that's okay. I have moved my sewing area 5 times in 20 years... maybe that's why I haven't been seeing much. Today I watched a pattern video of you 1 year ago. My daughter peeked and responded! Hey another is inspired! Wow! You're amazing! Beautiful and so happy!

I would either be up or down a long flight of stairs if I turned one of our spare bedrooms into a sewing room. It would be lovely, but I fear it might be a little lonely too. You’ve hit the nail on the head, nana. Sewers never get bored!! I marvel at eBay when I go to scroll patterns - searches come up with literally 78,000 patterns to look at. And fabric, glorious fabric! So much to see! Then all the actual doing and learning. The thrill of completion and a new garment hanging in the closet. It all adds up to never being bored. I love it, thank you! I know that happy place too - isn’t it great?😄👍

Hi Diane, lovely to hear from you. I went through a protracted absence from sewing - had a later-in-life baby, we moved, I started home schooling and that year my husband tore his Achilles’ tendon and had surgery. Sewing went out the window. I have just adored getting back to it, now that “the baby” is 17 and on the brink of high school graduation. Hope you’ll stick around - there’s no shortage of fabric or patterns ‘round here, and I like to make videos featuring what I’ve sewn, just showing it on a real person. Great to meet you!😄👍

I also sew in the dining room. I have a sewing room upstairs where I used to sew but after my husband had a stroke about 10 years ago I decided I wanted to spend time with him while sewing. Now the sewing room is where I store most of my supplies, my serger and cover lock machine and of course all the fabric and patterns. The dining room table is where my computerized machine is set up. I have a chest of wicker drawers that hold all my thread and supplies that I use the most. I use the island that my husband and I made for cutting out. It is high enough that I don't have to stoop over to cut. It is also just a bit bigger than my cutting mat and that was just a fluke. What garments I'm working on hang in the archway between the dining room and living room. I have home based sewing business apart from working full time as a classroom assistant at our local daycare. Your glass towers are now on my wish list. I just discovered you a few weeks ago and am totally hooked. You are inspiring me to make more time to sew for myself and to start using up the fabric stash. Keep on sewing!

I Love your studio, in our home in NY I had a designated sewing room with a nice BIG window and it was next too my dining room. Now I live in a condo in N. Myrtle Beach SC and all I have room for is a Corner in my bed room....lol. But that's ok, I call it my " Happy Spot Studio" and I LOVE it! Thanks for doing what you do.

Aw hon, thanks. It’s an ongoing “discipline” and it gets messy. I try to do a full clean between projects - vacuum (because I toss my thread clippings everywhere), table top clear, pattern put-away, trash empty. It helps to give cleared mental space as well, which also helps rev me up for the next garment-to-be. Now fabric...hmmm...that seems to be busting out all over.😱I need a 5th glass tower but I won’t buy one. That would just aid and abet my fabric habit. I need to manage what has spilled out onto the floors and get sewing. Thanks so much for writing, Kerstin!🌸💕

Your townhouse reminds me so much of visiting my brother when he lived in Columbia Maryland. It’s almost identical to yours. I live in Illinois and there aren’t many townhouses in my area, so when I went to visit him for the first time I was shocked to see whole townhouse communities. I love them.

That’s so interesting, and yet now that I think of it, there aren’t really townhouse communities in either of the places we love to visit - Naples, FL and Canaan Valley WV. We love it here because we’re close to the city and close to family. Thanks for watching, Wacky Jacky!

Oh Debi, this is so sweet on so many levels. Thank you.💕 I teared up reading about Whiskers. I understand that kind of devotion to an animal. I can’t even think about losing Zig and yet sometimes that’s all I think about, because I don’t know how I’ll stand it.🌸It was my pleasure to show you my home, although it felt a little scary to toss it out there. Hearing kind and positive feedback has been tremendous.👍The “laugh” sign was bought at Marshall’s or any of those discount stores and now with all the word signs I’m sure you can find one. And speaking of laughter, I always say I’m all for more laughter in the world because I AM!! I love to hear that people find my videos funny. Probably the minute I try to be funny they won’t be funny. So hopefully I can just “do what I do” without overthinking it. HE WAS TRULY A VERY AWESOME CREATURE WHO LOVED ONLY ME . ANOTHER ATTRIBUTE OF THE NEBELUNG.
