How is your hexi quilt coming along? You haven’t posted about it lately. Would love to see your progress as you have inspired me to try my hand at a hexi quilt. I followed your instructions and tips and love my hexies so far. Just started last summer, July of 23. You are a very good teacher! Thanks!

I’m still sewing the quilt together, actually just reached the halfway point. I’m planning on adding a single row down the sides, that goes with the pattern layout. For the top and bottom I will probably need to do a half of a flower block, or whatever to fill in along those sides. After I remove the papers and machine quilt it, then I will trim everything straight. I had a client who made a hexie flower quilt that trimmed it straight on the edges ready to bring, and all of her hand stitching started coming undone on the edges. So she had to go back and fix every hexie along the edge. So my plan is to cut after it’s quilted, and immediately bind it. Or I may even sew a 1/8” seam around the quilt along the edge to secure it before I trim it. I hope that helps.

Do you think this concept would work if you made hexi flowers without papers? That is what I am currently doing.

I’m not sure. The paper has allowed me to keep the shape and edges sharp. I know there is a method to sew hexies with a sewing machine. I haven’t seen the technique, but one of my friends teaches it at a local quilt shop.

I’m wondering if you’ve gotten far enough along to show us how you add on when it’s gotten pretty big. I’m feeling pretty frustrated and could use seeing how someone else does it. Thank you!

I actually have half of it sewn together. I’m just adding one long row to it at a time. It definitely can be slow going and a lot the handle. I’ve actually thought about sewing the other half together, and then sewing the first half to the second half. It does get harder to manage when there is so much of it. I have had some of the papers start to fall out from folding and moving things around so much, and I just leave them out...unless they are on the hexies that I’m stitching together. Hopefully that is helpful!!
