A lot of people don't know that the tension you showed us is for the top thread. However there is a very small screw on the bobbin holder that adjusts the bottom thread. If you don't know this you could very likely need to take your machine to a repairman. In my area it cost $100 just to put your machine on the bench! Then you would be charged for adjusting the tension. Turn the bobbin screw in very, very small increments to adjust it. This I have learned from 50 years of using a sewing machine. I got my first one at 10 years old. I now have 4 machines and i use all of them for different sewing needs. Going from oldest to newest I have a White Jeans Machine, White Serger, Bernina185E (I use the most) and a Brother Quilting machine.

Having taught sewing classes to people who are buying their machines one of the simple tips for tension is that you pull the bottom thread and one hand the bobbin thread and one hand and the top thread that comes through your needle in the other hand and pull them simultaneously and if they come together at the same rate your fine if they don't then you know that your tension needs to be adjusted until they are equal. This is a long explanation for a very simple task sorry. Give it a try

Two years ago at the start of the pandemic I bought a Brother sewing machine on Amazoin in order to make face masks for my family and friends. I knew nothing about sewing. One day while browsing KZread for videos on how to make masks, a moment of serendipity occurred. I saw a video of Johanna Clough making journals. Then I found you Joie and I was “hook, line, and sinker” head over heels in love with making junk journals and paper crafting ever since!!! I think your Hobby Craft midi is really a good value! Thank you for sharing this very informative video! 🧵🪡📚🥰

Joie: well, this was just a worthwhile video. Believe it or not, I have my Mother’s sewing machine (1957), that I use for fabrics. I haven’t sewn paper on it yet. A little hesitant to do so. I was thinking of purchasing another one for sewing paper. And I,too want something simple. So you gave me some ideas for investigation. Thank you for being on top of things. Let me also say this. I do my crafting for pure relaxation and enjoyment. I don’t have a shop, and I don’t sell my crafts. For all of you that are crafting for pleasure, and it is your business, a machine is a really important tool. So your video is a very helpful one. I think the journal community is one of the best group of people I know. Thank you. Carol from California

I have been looking at £400 + machines and I now realise that expensive doesn't necessarily mean they are better. I do fancy an embroidery machine but also now think I don't need 100+ stitches. I have an old singer. Heavy and it stays in one spot. I use it on all my junk journal projects. It has just the basic stitches; straight, and a couple of different zig zags. I do not use the reverse button as I knot and tie off my threads. What is important is being able to give it brush (especially around the bobbin area) as paper dust can collect around the needle area and clog things up after a while.

I have to confess to being a sewing machine addict. I have several ranging from antiques to heavy duty quilting machines. Having said that my love is hand sewing. I often hand sew garments instead of pulling out machine. I found this video useful because I am in the market for a new machine that I can use for paper. I will keep my expensive machines for their normal uses. I remember when I did sewing at school (many decades ago) I had to sew lines of holes in brown paper until the teacher was satisfied I could use a machine. They were hand cranked machines back then. I think my antique singer is the best machine I have ever sewed on. It is a beast that will take on anything and just keeps on working.

This is a very nice informational video on sewing machine needs. I was a professional seamstress in the '70's and also designed garments for women in the US, myself and 4 kiddos..so my needs have changed over the years in a machine. I own several machines, Singers and Janome's mostly...as I have done quilting for 40 years as well, and those machines are in cabinets that are flush to the sewing area for fabrics. BUT for sewing on paper, I use a simple little lilac Janome, similar to your craft machine, as I did not want to ruin my good machines on paper. The needles do not stay as sharp after paper usage, and cannot be used well for fabric then. Tension is a big deal for sure, if the bobbin thread is too loose or too tight, the stitching is not secure and it looks rough, or loopy. But for paper, our little craft machines are great with straight stitch and zigzag..its really all we need for tags, journals and paper goods. Thanks for going over this subject for soo many ladies only use paper and sure do not need high $$ machines with gobs of stitches.. Great job with your video teaching here!

I have sewn since I was in 8th grade and I am now in my 60s. I had to replace my sewing machine last summer and I got one with a lot of bells and whistles because I was buying it for fabric sewing. Wouldn't you know I found junk journaling and I have sewn on paper way more than fabric this last year! I just make sure to blow out the paper dust and keep an eye on my needle. I should probably change it before I sew on material but I never think to do it. Thanks for the great video.

Excellent video. I have three sewing machines. For a while I had 5, which included an old Singer in cabinet and a serger. Those two have gone on to other homes. I own a 1974 Kenmore (which stills works great), a singer from the 80’s, and an Ella that I bought at the second hand store several years ago. Might be from the 70’s. They all still work great. I started sewing when I was very young and my parents bought me my first sewing machine at the age of 10. Thanks again for the video.

Thank you Joie. Great advice. I have two sewing machines that I use when quilting and have had several Singers and Brothers over the years. I have settled on Brothers for quilting and also I have an old Singer Featherweight which is my all time favorite for a percise straight stitch. When I started JJ I did not want to use my quilting machines to sew paper so I went on Amazon and found a little machine similar to the one you have. So far, so good. It's perfect for sewing papers and it's so lightweight I can haul it all around the house wherever I am working. Thanks again for the tour of a good machine for paper crafts.

That's an interesting video. I have one the same as yours in Spain (because we spend 2 months in the winter out there and the weather can be dodgy - perfect for crafting and watching KZread videos!). I love that it's lightweight and no fuss too. Did have an arguement with it last month when it snarled some thread - it doesn't like thicker sewing thead. It's not a patch on my Janome for stability and that has a needle threader which I need these days. However it's good value for money and if I really wanted to I could travel with it and a mini kit of resources!!!

I must admit I have 4 machines. I have one that is an industrial sewing machine, it only has one stitch which is the straight stitch, You can adjust the length and it does go backwards. I purchased it used years ago and it works great for thick layers of fabric. Right now it is in storage due to us down sizing our home, But I hope one day soon to get my own she shed. One of the machines is an overlock machine, again good for sewing, It does the stitches you see on the inside of clothes that keeps things from fraying and uses 4 spools of thread, not a good machine for paper. Then I have my brother quilting machine which has over 40 stitches, lots of decorative stitches. I also have my mother in laws singer which is at least 50 years old and is a very heavy machine I just had serviced and have not had a chance to try it on paper yet but I think it should do good. I have been sewing over 50 years and have made lots of clothes, made quilts, purse's and lots of other fun things. I am enjoying using my machine for paper now.

This is very helpful Joie. I have machines, an ELNA Lotus that I found on a nature strip hard waste collection last year; an ELNA Lotus I bought in 1976, an Elna 1200 from 1983; a Janome from 1980's that my sister-in-law no longer used and last of all, my mother's PFAFF Hobbycraft from the late seventies I think. I want to give away the PFAFF if anyone in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne Australia is willing to collect it. I sewed clothing then later quilts with my ELNA machines which I consider my favourites. I use the found ELNA for paper and the JANOME for paper. I don't need the PFAFF but they are well built machines. My mother used it for sewing clothing and quilts.

Great video Joie and I agree your machine is perfect for people who need a sewing machine for junk journaling exclusively. After retiring a couple of years ago and planning to do more sewing I took the opportunity to upgrade my problematic old Janome while hubby was still working. I purchased a Brother Innov-is A150 and then I discovered junk journaling and it's mainly been used for paper. Anyway, I don't regret the purchase because it's a lovely machine and I am sure it will get plenty of use on fabric too 😂 By the way it was you who inspired me to start sewing my ephemera 😁

I have to sign machines. One is a very expensive sewing machine that I have had for many many years it was one of the first computer machines that came out and a brand in the US called new home which is now called Janome. It was back then $1,000. And then I have a small brother computer machine which I bought from Walmart and I have been using that for about 6:00 or 7 years just mainly for crafting but also at one point I did a lot of clothes sewing on it. But it no longer works. I'm going to buy a new machine just for paper and this video was very helpful to me to get my mind in the right frame of what I really need and what I don't need. I went on Amazon and I found a machine that was in the $50 range and that is what I'm going to go for. Although I've been a solar for about sixty years I am still learning also and this video was so helpful thank you

I love the way stiching looks on paper! I haven't even touched a sewing machine in more than forty-years though! I've been keeping a close eye at Goodwill, Thrift Shops & other Second-Hand Stores around me; Hoping I might get lucky & find a sewing machine for a price I can afford; But also not be too complicated fore to figure out. I was about to go get one of those cheap, battery-ran, hand-held sewing machine-MINI's, but I heard that several amazing Ladies in our Crafty Community had already gotten one (To take with them when they can't e at their craft desk) Yet I don't think I've found a single person who said that they were even able to get the Mini to work at all. Due to the predicament I'm in; 1st of all; I know I really shouldn't be spending any money on anything that's not considered a Life's Necessity; So I definitely don't want to go spend money on something that'd finally allow me to stich on paper.......To quickly find out that my money had been waisted. •So I'm grateful for the others who do freely share their experiences! As for now, I think I'll continue using a thin marker to make it LOOK as it's been stitched here & there. (LOL). But One of these days... I REALLY hope to have my very own Manuel Die-Cutting Machine (Something like A BigShot; As I doubt I'd e er be able to figure out how to use all those Digital Scan & Cut-Thingys! LOL) ...& Hopefully, I'll get lucky & find a simple sewing machine Second-Hand; So I'll be able to mark both those off "My Bucket List! LOL!

Another great video, Joie. I started watching your videos in the middle of the pandemic when I decided to make junk journals. I was very unlucky with my first sewing machine and that predisposed me negatively to them. I used that machine until October last year (not having another one and too upset to buy a new one!) and then I stopped using it altogether. A piece of junk from a very well-known brand. A total disappointment. But I love sewing so I started looking for another one in March this year. I finally found one with enough great reviews, used by other junk journal artists here in the US, and with enough videos and information to learn how it behaves. It's the Brother Project Runaway, with 125 stitches. I got it 2 weeks ago but I haven't used it yet. It's beautiful. Yet, I am afraid of it, as if it were a monster! Afraid of ruining it, afraid of breaking it! Ironically, I found a cheap one in Aldi, similar to the one you have, for only US$39 last week. I bought two and I haven't stopped sewing ephemera since then.😊😊 It works wonderfully with zig-zag, doesn't break the thread and I love the two-speed option (I also use the low speed). I think I will use the Brother only to sew on fabric using the pretty stitches design for covers and tags, where also no glue is involved (I have read that glue damages needles and affects tension). I will use the small ones for paper and cards. 😊😊

Joie, what a splendid video! I found it so encouraging. I bought a similar machine from Amazon a couple of years ago because being new to junk journalling I was watching videos on KZread of crafter's sewing paper and thought " I need to do this too". I've only used it a couple of times, it sits in a cupboard in its original box. I know this may sound daft, because it's dinky I didn't feel it was a ' grown ups ' machine, I tend to view my crafting attempts in the same way. I don't have a separate room to craft, so my supplies tend to be scattered, which I think adds to the unprofessional feelings I have! Nevertheless I enjoy paper crafting and appreciate to help gleaned from watching you all with your great ideas. As an add on I think my sewing machine will run on batteries also. Thank you again Joie. X

Then I found I had a hard time with the foot, it was for me extremely fast or off, I’m not very good, So it’s gone back in it’s box. Then a couple of weeks ago I saw your hobby craft tiny machine, so I looked it up, wow! The one I chose was slightly different but I love it. No foot pedal needed, slow speed which I love. Great idea for a video Joie, I own a Phaff machine and have yet to get up the nerve to sew paper on it. I am considering getting a second hand older machine, as I believe they would be heartier. I see some people use glue to tack the papers together and I’m not sure what the impact glue would have on the moving parts. So I will avoid glue along the stitching line. We'll put together video. Being a quilter, I have several machines. I use a "middle of the road" Brother for paper because it is easy to fiddle with the upper and lower tensions so my back looks as good as the front. Also, though there are more stitches than I usually need, it affords me choices and the ability to have wider stitches when I want to vary those widths. If I work carefully, I can use a blanket stitch for a faux applique effect.

Wonderfully informative video Joie. You covered everything so well. I also have a small Magicfly (similar to yours)just for sewing on paper and little things. I did find I couldn't sew on heavier thick layered card but being a beginner you mentioned the tension which I haven't adjusted. Also have my mother's Singer from 1966 which still works but is fussy. I was curious though if anyone uses the small handheld sewers like singer 01663 portable mender. Thanks for all the useful info.

I've not heard good things about the handheld sewers. Open to feedback from anyone else who has an opinion. 🥰

I've been super lucky, I had one already as I've always sewn and when I upgraded it turned into my paper sewing machine. My new one has cute stitch patterns like leaves and more features but trying to keep it for fabric. It's also got a drop in bobbin and needle threader which really are game changers for me. Lol neither of mine have a speed, it pedal to the metal with me 🙊 rebel without a Pause 😄😄😄. There's a knack to varying pressure on the pedal. Tension is dodgy and can depend on your thread to. I got an l shaped desk when I got my overlocker so all 3 on the desk 🙈. I prefer a dial too. My paper one is Toyota and other one is a Pfaff. SEWING MACHINES DIRECT is a great place for all budgets and experience. Sewing paper is more fun and less stress than fabric. Happy sewing Joie, Tfs and have a great day 💖💖💖

Pfaff seems to be very popular, yet I hadn't even heard of it before!!🥰

I've got to say I've used singer, brother (that's my overlocker) and Toyota but the quality of this Pfaff smarter is fantastic! Well made, easy to use and a real workhorse. I also can't praise Sewing machines direct enough. The prices were great (way better than Amazon and freebies to boot). Their customer service is equalled only by Bravissimo🙊. Xxx

That is your thread tension. You only change that if your thread is heavy (jeans weight). Or fine threads like silk. You would also change your needle to accommodate your thread weight. Normal sewing use a 90/14 size needle. I have 4 Singer machines, of various quality, a Pfaff embroidery machine, a pfaff quilting machine, I also had a Kenmore which works fabulous which I gave my granddaughter. That machine actually works the best on paper..if I were buying a machine for paper crafting I would get the we R memories machine.

Loved your video, I feel the same way, too many bells and whistles make a machine more intimidating. simple is best.
