Sandra Betzina taught me years ago to interface the fabric and THEN cut the pattern piece out. Perfect every time.

That is an awesome tip thanks.
I started sewing when I was 9 years old; nearly 60 years ago but I love watching other’s teaching videos. There’s always something I can learn. Thanks for putting in the time and effort to bring us such great content!!
I loved the way you folded the neck facing and cut it together with the interfacing! Oh my, how many years have I and others cut them separately? 🤣

I had such a ‘duh’ moment. Why would I not have done this all along? Ding, ding, ding, new idea.
In our little country, Belgium, this fabric is called viscose, at least if I'm not wrong. I really enjoy working with this type of fabric. falls so beautifully along your body and wears wonderfully when you are in the menopause.😊 I have discovered that there are differences in wrinkles in this type of fabric. Always iron! Thank you for this tutorial and the tip to cut the fabric and facing together, always perfectly even!👌🤗 I love to see you talking so excited about fabrics and patterns. That makes me so happy🙂 A fabric store is like a candy store to me😊😉 Groetjes uit België 😘

You are not wrong. I found out they are the same thing. I love both fabrics but really the same fabric:)

Yes, I'm in England and was guessing that viscose is the same thing :).
Wow; love to be taught new stuff; especially that facing cut out. Genius.

Ditto on that interfacing cutting tip. Brilliant!
Oh I LOVE that blue and taupe floral
Viv: I am someone who needed this video, so thank you for that. Some of the information regarding Challis I have learned in the past from watching your videos, but this show today put it all together nicely. You're a good teacher, by the way. Just wanted you to know.
"It wasn't really on the grain. I just cut i out, sew it toghever and hoped for the best" Basicly me everytime I sew something with a difficult fabric that I hate sewing but love wearing 🤣🌸
Thank you Viv. Many questions I had about Rayon Challis have now been answered. Please give us more videos like this. I loved your fabric cutting tips 😊
Learned so much and had a laugh with Paula C. I have been cutting my interfacing separately forever! This one tip alone is worth its weight in gold! I have owned beautiful Rayon Challis dresses bit ner tried sewing one! So eager to try! Thanks again for being here and calling us on!
OMG, I never thought to fold the facing and add the interfacing! Game changer...just proves you are never too old to learn something new!!! And I've been sewing 50 years. Thank you soooo much.
Challis is all I wear when I’m at my place in Hawaii. Most comfortable in the tropics. Do it!
Oh my goodness!!!! Thank you, thank you, thank you! I knew I could count on you. I was not expecting a whole video but I think it’s a great idea to do whole videos devoted to fabric types. Thank you again! and you made me feel so much more comfortable to forge ahead with my rayon challis makes.
I have mesh bags that i put my fabric and delicates into before putting it in the washing machine. The fraying is contained and the issue is solved... ☀️

I do that as well, works a treat!
I appreciate all of your tips. I have been given a bunch of this fabric, but haven't ever used it.
When I was a child I love cutting out paper dolls. So I know hope fun cutting can be.
What a great video for me who’s new to sewing. Thank you so much

My pleasure, Pauline! Welcome!😄
Oh Vivian, how I enjoyed this tutorial!!! I would love seeing more “working with” tutorials! Even the construction tutorials where you sew and give us a step-by-step. I love challis fabric! I love the way it moves with you. It’s just a beautiful fabric! Thanks again!
Thank you so much for this teaching video! It was very informative, and got me in the mood to sew something out of rayon challis. Keep your sewing videos coming Viv!
I cut my notched out like you do as well. I don't like cutting into the seam allowance. I haven't seen the out notch cut by others for a good long while. Some really good tips. Thanks.
I love rayon Challis. You have beautiful fabrics in your collection.
Oh........enjoyed this info so very much! Can we ever have too much knowledge...I don't think so! Thank you very much. Showing other garments you have made out of rayon challis really helped! Thanks again!
This very informative! I would love to see how the hello dress turned out 😊
Thank you so much. Just loved this tutorial- soooo helpful and supportive
The fact that rayon is heavy when wet, speaks to it's breathability and comfort factor when wearing. If you have a serger with two thread overcast capability it's a great lightweight choice for finishing raw edges. Hem tape is a really nice finish for straight hems on rayon challis :-)
Love this video, and I love rayon challis too. Thank you for showing how you work with this beautiful fabric Viv, just love your dresses that you showed us.x
Thankyou for taking the fear out of rayon challis for me. I also love that you use scissors and pins and cut the notches out. I do too and now i dont feel alone. Rotary cutters scare me and i like old school ways. If it aint broke...

Hear, hear, Janet! (Or is it “here, here”? I’ve never quite known.) Seamstresses love their rotary cutters but I’ve never even been tempted to try one out. For me, pinning the pattern piece to the fabric is key because of markings, for one thing...if you just use pattern weights I imagine your fabric and pattern piece soon part ways. The best thing about sewing is that we can each do what we like with sewing methods. I don’t understand people who say “my way or the highway!” and they’re definitely out there!! Thanks for writing😄
So helpful. Thank you!
I never thought about cutting facing and interfacing together-very clever!
Thank you for this video! Very informative!
Great video, Vivmom! Please do more like this, for different fabrics!
Thanks for this. I've never sewn with Challis, yet.
Thank you for reminding me about cutting notches outward. Other methods often leave notches hidden.
Just wanted to know what challis felt like and as videos go, this was really helpful! Thank you.
I love Rayon Challis too!
I enjoy sewing with rayon challis too! I enjoyed seeing items you have already made with this fabric.
Great educational video. I didn’t know anything about fabrics until I started watching your channel. You have taught me so much about fabric and sewing in general. I’ve even been to Fabric Mart a few times🙂 Thanks so much! Keep em coming.
Viv you are a Star! There is so much good information in this video, many excellent tips which I mean to employ. I like the cutting notches outside the seam allowance as I have often made mistakes cutting into my fabric. You have made some gorgeous tops and I can see why they attract compliments. Thank you Viv.xx

Cutting notches opposite or outwards like viv does, that's how my mom taught me. I'm 67, I learned to sew before i was 10. Also sewed all my doll clothes. I sewed all my high school clothes.we couldn't wear pants first couple years hi school. Junior yr. 70-71(Pants had to match the top material, so it was pant suits, so matching top and bottom. And of course they were all bell bottoms. Our senior year(71-72) we could wear blue jeans( bell bottoms of course). But I also sewed mini skirts, sometimes our sweaters wear longer then the skirt lol. Made alot of hip hugger hot pants, taking way less than a yd of fabric. Some of stories I remember. Stop rambling Bonnie Jill. Enough history lesson. Oh those vintage patterns she sews, I've sewn most of them lol 👍😝🤪😜love Viv.
I love sewing with Rayon Challis. I buy it whenever I can find a good buy on it. I have a few pieces sitting in my fabric cabinet, just waiting for the right pattern.
Excellent cutting and overall tutorial 👌🏾👍🥰
Just finished cutting and sewing top from challis. THANK YOU for the spray starch tip!!! It was like working with different fabric! I could control the fabric instead of it controlling me. ; -)
Very informative tutorial. Love your channel….

Love the tips and encouragement to use rayon challis. Your makes are beautiful as always. I do not own a serger and prefer to use french seams where possible. I like the more traditional finishes.
I really enjoyed this 'Challis' session! And I totally agree that it's a near perfect fabric for all seasons. Just wanted to let you know about another great source for challis and other fabrics too; Elliott Berman Textiles in NY! They have a wonderful online store as well. High end fabrics from Italy, France and Spain. Keep watching their site because a few times each year they have 50% off their entire site! And lately they've had weekly specials offered at great savings! I've purchased some gorgeous challis fabrics from them and they are truly amazing. Worth a "look see." Thanks again!
Such useful tips and information, Viv! Thank you! Kind regards from Penny in Liverpool 🇬🇧😊💕
Hi viv👋. Looking forward to sewing with a rayon challis, that fabric is new to me, I have to try colour blocking for the first time before I venture too far ahead of myself. I appreciate your teachings🙏😇
Extremely helpful video, well done. Keep them coming!
Great topic, Viv! Well done! Love you and I love my rayon challis!
Such a helpful tutorial! Thank you Viv!
I love rayon anything! It’s lovely fabric! People love my rayon items. I usually use batiks because I can be creative with lay out. Speaking of layout…. Thank you for the tip to cut fabric and interfacing together!

A very good friend of mine taught me that also. Very good advice.
Thank you Viv for the information. It was very helpful 🙂
I love this. Your insights and experience are FANTASTIC. We learn equally from your technical AND casual comments. Again, you’re awesome! 👏👏👏
Hi Viv, what great info! I treated myself to a beautiful piece of rayon challis and now I know how to do it! Thanks
It is very helpful to new sewists when you demonstrate cutting the patterns. Thank you for doing that!
Thanks for the information, I want to try this fabric and I love the movement of it. 😊
Thank you so much for this video. Do one like this for knits!
I am really surprised by all the printed patterns! I don't know what I was expecting, just solids, I guess. I will now have to do a search for Rayon Challis. This was very informative, thank you.
I always toss a 'color catcher sheet' in the washer when I pre-wash any new fabric. You can see if anything has a 'color run' when you do that...for future notation.
Thank you for sharing Viv , very informative! 💕 Bridget R
Thank you Viv for the info. I haven't sewn with challis in a very long time but would love to try it again because it's such a lovely fabric. I need to get online and place an order!
I’m in love with everything about rayon’s sister viscose fabric and have just bought the fork pins by Clover which are a game changer! I also pull a horizontal thread across the length (vertically too if I’m not sure) before cutting to make sure it’s 100% straight because even after pressing it’s so easy for the grain to be a bit off, I try not to move the iron as much as possible because that can also result in the fabric becoming misshapen. Thanks Viv, it’s your enthusiasm for rayon challis that sent me on the hunt for it and is how I discovered the wonderful viscose!
Love rayon challis
Love this video content! Need more like this with other fabric choices and tips like cut interfacing and fabric together. Smart. Thank you
What I find neat about Rayon is that although it wrinkles easily, you can also get it to unwrinkle easily (unlike cotton). I have some rayon shirts and some skirts (store bought). I can just finely spritz them with water and literally shake the fabric, flap it up and down for a bit and hang it on a coat hanger for a while and it will pull it's own wrinkles out. If you do this the night before you plan on wearing it, that's easy to do. You can also spritz it with water and toss it in a low dryer real quick. If you want a crisper look, then yeah, you'll have to iron it.
Great video! I’m new to garment sewing and appreciated the info and tips. Maybe you could do this with more fabrics?
great topic and *sew* helpful! I like the bold patterns
Thank you so much for this video! I learned so much!!!!
Wowza! Wonderful tutorial about a fabric I have avoided sewing out of just plain intimidation. Thanks to the viewer who suggested the topic.
great video from a begginer sewer....thanks
Cool.. thank you Miss V!
Great content Viv,love all your tips
Thanks Viv, very helpful info.
Great tips I would have never thought of! I love the material, but I’m not great with maneuvering fabrics. Thank you!!!
Yes to using pins and scissors as opposed to pattern weights and rotary cutter!!
Great video. You have such beautiful cuts of rayon challis. Thanks for the tips. I'm trying to get back to sewing but I just sit and watch your videos. I'm such a procrastinator. Oh. And love the assortment of hangers like the one wire covered in yarn. I did that in jr. high. I'm a pattern and fabric junkie too.
I just bought some rayon challis right before I found out I was having knee surgery. I’ve just got back in my sewing room and I’ve been perfecting my pants pattern. I hope to cut out a muslin and get a lot sewn tomorrow and check the fit. It’s been little slow going as I still fatigue easily. After some pants I really want to get into sewing some tops with the challis. Your tips on sewing with it are right on time and will be so helpful.
Great information. Thank you for sharing!
Thanks Viv for all the great tips!
Thank You for such a great video. I am definitely going to try rayon challis.
Viv, I just love these type of tutorial videos . Thanks so much
Thank you Viv so informational and I love that fabric❤
Always learning something new! I love cutting out patterns but for some strange reason I adamantly despise cutting the interfacing. Makes no sense so thank you for the hot tip.
This was such a helpful video. Thank you so much!!
Oh! LOVE the pattern you picked for this video too. Love it!
Such an informative video even though I thought I knew about Viscose! Some great tips thank you and some gorgeous fabrics there 😍. Don’t you just hate those knotted frayed edges after a wash 😱 x
Thank you so much I really enjoyed this video thank you for all the tips and tricks. So helpful!
Great lesson!
Great video thanks for the demo reallly enjoyed it
This is fab information….. thank you for sharing viv xx
Lovely video! Will we get to see the finished 60’s dress? I can hardly wait.
Very informative video, thank you 🙏
Loved the idea about cutting the notches outward. Thank!
Thank you for the thorough video with so many tips! I love to sew with rayon challis too and also love to wear it.
As always excellent information in a fun Quirky teaching style!
Genius ! I never thought about doing interfacing with pattern pieces ! Thank you thank you
Awesome lecture 👏🏻
Congratulations on making demonstration video - I learned a lot ! I have wanted for years for some sawists to show yardage, explain what kind of patterns to use and show examples of made garments. I think you are the first. Great video - would love more along this line. God bless the work of your hands.
The first time I work with challis, it looks beautiful but the problem was I had not made knots before so I didn’t know the things I should have done to make it great! I used rayon thread but did not use a stretch stitch so after wearing it to church a couple of times with my kids at church, I popped the seam! That thread cut right through it like a knife! I used a very rigid stitch! Lesson learned!

Nancy, rayon thread is for machine embroidery sewing. It’s not strong enough for sewing garment seams. Your stitches popped because of the thread you used! I would suggest you use a good quality all purpose polyester thread such as Guttermann. Some sewists really like Aurifil cotton thread for seaming as well. One only needs a stretch stitch when sewing a knit or spandex athletic fabric. Hope that helps!
Thank you very informative and I’m excited to try it.
Just love your videos. Always encouraging and very real. Take care and God bless.
