SEVR 1.5 HYBRID: BROADHEAD TEST (Highest Score to Date)

Спорт

Discount Code: LUSKFIVE saves $5 on any order.
This is a test of the 125 gr 1.5 Hybrid Broadhead by Sevr.
Here is summary of my 2024 Testing Procedure & Scoring w/the scores of this head posted in parenthesis as well.
1. Flight Forgiveness (20%, 22 pts)
I'm using a Killer Instinct SWAT X1 crossbow, mounted to a BOG tripod, shooting a 670 gr Bishop Archery GOAT bolt (300 fps) at 30 yds. Field points consistently hit in the 10 ring & bullseye. I use the exact same bolt to shoot the broadhead. The only difference in the two shots is the broadhead's flight forgiveness vs that of the field point. A bullseye gets a score of 11/10, or a score of 22. The 10 ring gets a 10/10, or 20 points; a 9 ring gets a 9/10 or 18 points...& so forth, with each wider ring being 1/2" farther from the bullseye. Mechs are also given 1 Bonus Point for extra forgiveness.
2. Cut Size (20%, 16.82 pts)
The more tissue being cut, the more lethal the head, all else equal. The entrance cut, total cut, & width of the cut (a crucial variable for bloodletting) are all scored:
The entrance cut size is compared to a standard of 2.5" then that fraction is weighted to 7% of the score. (1.5"+.7" = 2.2" = 6.16 pts)
The max cut size is compared to a standard of 2.5" as well, then that fraction is is weighted to 7% of the score. (2.2”=6.16 pts)
The max cutting diameter is compared to a standard of 2.0", then that fraction is weighted to 6% of the score. (1.5" = 4.5 pts)
3. Blades (20%, 19.3 pts)
Initial sharpness 9%, 143 grams = 10/10 = 9 pts +.57 bonus = 9.57 pts & Edge Retention (9%, +15 grams = 9.7/10 = 8.73 pts) are measured using the Edge On Up Sharpness Tester. The pressure needed for a blade to cut thru a copolymer wire is measured in grams.
Edge Retention is the loss of sharpness after the head is shot in Penetration Test 1, thru 1/2" MDF & 2/3" rubber foam mat & Clear Ballistics FBI gel. For every 50 "grams" of sharpness lost, 1 point is deducted from 10.
What are some sharpness scores for common edges?
A butter knife takes 2000 grams of pressure to break the co polymer wire.
A new high end cutlery edge: ~ 375 grams of pressure.
A utility razor blade: 200 grams.
Based on the many broadheads I have tested, here is my scoring scale:
Out of the Box Sharpness:
0-200 gr: 10
201-300 gr 9
301-400 gr: 8
401-500 gr: 7
501-600 gr: 6
601-700 gr: 5
Ease to resharpen or replace blades is judged & given 2% of the score. (5/10= 1 pt)
4. Penetration (20%, 16.34 pts)
There are 2 penetration tests:
Pen Test 1: 1/2" MDF, 2/3" rubber foam mat, Clear Ballistics FBI gel. Depth of penetration is compared to a standard of 9" & weighted to 10% of the score. (9" = 10 pts)
Pen Test 2: Layered cardboard. # of layers penetrated is compared to a standard of 70 layers & weighted to 10% of the score. (45 layers= 6.43 pts)
5. Durability (20%, 19.88 pts)
Each head is shot thru 1/2" MDF 3 times. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 12% of the score. (10/10 = 12 pts)
If a head survives that, it is then shot thru 22 ga steel plate twice. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 5% of the score. (9.75/10 = 4.88 pt)
If a head survives that, it is then shot into concrete once. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 3% of the score. (10/10 = 3 pts).
Steel plate & concrete are certainly not "realistic" mediums, but they do reveal the outer limits of a head's durability.
Bonus:
+1 Blades lock open on impact
+1 Blades lock closed for practice
+1 Mechanical flight bonus
-1 Kind of a pain to close the blades
Total Bonus= +2 pts
TOTAL SCORE: 96.34 pts = 10 Golden Arrows

Only issue I've ever had with sevr (have taken multiple big game with them, pronghorn, elk and mule deer) is they seem to put less blood on the ground than other comparable size heads. This fixes that one problem for sure!

  • @Chasintail11

    @Chasintail11

I found that they swing over and or close up while inside the cavity then open back up when they exit. That’s why sometimes you don’t see slot of blood.

  • @LuskArcheryAdventures

    @LuskArcheryAdventures

    29 күн бұрын

I’ve really not seen that as an issue. I’ve heard people say that, but I’ve taken about 30 animals with them. It is much more of a function of shot placement than anything else. I’ve had some of my shots produce a downright bloodbath. And I’ve had others be a lot more of a trickle. But it all depends on whether clip an artery or not. Even with a seemingly good shot, if you do not cut an artery, you will not get the same amount of blood. Or if you hit a little bit high in the lungs, you will not get as much blood.

Hey man thanks for your great reviews. After being inspired by your videos I decided to use the sevr 1.5 on a nice bull moose in northern Ontario last year. I’m heading back up this year. After your testing would you lean towards these new hybrids instead of the 1.5s for a large animal like a moose?

  • @LuskArcheryAdventures

Good question. It largely depends on your set up and shot distance. It takes more oomph to drive it deeply. If your goal is maximum penetration, the 1.5 is best. If you have plenty of momentum, then the 1.5 Hybrid would be great.

When I hunted moose, I had a Sevr 1.5 and Iron Will Single Bevel with bleeders in my quiver. I’d planned for the IW for frontal or quartering shots and the Sevr for broadside or longer, or windier shots. The moose was coming straight at me so I nocked the IW. Then it turned broadside-no time to swap out, so I drilled it with the IW. It ran to 70 yds & stopped, at which time I drilled it with a Sevr 1.5. I loved that combo.

I don’t think they will. That’s part of the design and what makes them unique. I’ve only had it proved quite lethal for me, after shooting a lot of animals with it. And the extra bleeder makes up for anything lost by the blade that pivots closed. I recently used the 1.74 in Argentina. They made a great initial hole, and pivoted well after one blade cut through the rib and the other swung closed, then pivoted back open immediately after that and stuck out the far side. I was impressed by how quickly they pivoted back open and also for the cut of the rib while one blade was open and one was closed.

Makes for less blood. Love the toughness of them and how well they are made. Since they went hybrid I'd hope they were going to start to make other small options and changes. Like add no pivot option. I personally don't need the pivot to help with penetration on my bow specs, but like it for the wife and her specs. I didn't think sevr would go part fixed head since they were unique with no fixed heads. They are working their way to a fixed head so I'm hoping they will work their way to none pivot blade option but keep the option to pivot for ppl that want that option.

  • @LuskArcheryAdventures

    @LuskArcheryAdventures

    3 күн бұрын

I have commented on that with some of the other Sevr videos. I just can’t share everything and every video. If you have a foam insert in your quiver, you need to cut a little space for the Broadhead to slide into so it doesn’t open them prematurely. That’s the way it is with a number of mechanicals as well. Or you can get the kind of quiver that does not have foam, but rather has a harder rubber insert. Those will press on the deployment arms at all. I have lot of videos on my channel where I use the sever on hunts. A lot. And I show how they work. You can check them out on my channel, just search for Sevr and many will come up. I’ve taken many Whitetail, including big Iowa bucks, huge hogs, a red stag, zebra, blesbok, muley, and turkeys with them.

It would be interesting to see downrage velocity, using a lab radar to get velocity, then add that to the comparison, you should be able to quantify drag in a way doing that were we can see how each broadhead effects downrange velocity. It's not perfect since you would have to normalize for atmospheric conditions, but might be good enough.

Great video but the deep breathes are SO BAD… man if you don’t want to spend the 2 hours removing them, get a kid on fiver to go through and take them all out.

I know. It was terrible. It’s because the mic was way too close to my face. I just did not have time to edit it. With that same location of the Mike I had made about 10 more videos, and took the time to edit them all. Now I’m really careful to scoot the shotgun mic back more. It sounds like I’m dying or something. But really the breasts were inaudible to me.

Sever got a good high score the 1.75 and from what I’m hearing they don’t perform well on animals

The 1.75 has performed extremely well for me in the field--taken multiple hogs and even a nice Red Stag with it. Made great holes and flies like a dart. You can see the vids here on my channel.
