Severn Valley Spring Steam Gala Action! Taw Valley, Blue Peter, Fenchurch etc, 20th April 2024

After a great time out at the Severn Valley Railway's Spring Gala in 2023, I had to come back again for the event this year and it didn't disappoint! There was a really nice list of Tank Engines as visiting guest locomotives this time around, as well as 60532 Blue Peter which while on display, was a really nice sight to see as the locomotive has been on the line for about a month doing some loaded test runs in preparation for its eventual return to the mainline this year. GWR 1369 came in as a last minute replacement, as the newly built 6880 Betton Grange locomotive wasn't ready in time to take part, which also meant that SR West Country's Taw Valley came out to take part in what will be its final Gala appearance before its Intermediate overhaul.
Guest Locomotives:
LNER Peppercorn Class A2 60532 Blue Peter, on display at Kidderminster, visiting from Crewe.
Lambton Collery Railway No.29, visiting from the North Yorkshire Moors Railway.
GWR 1366 Class 1369, visiting from the South Devon Railway.
LB&SCR A1 Class 72 Fenchurch, visiting from the Bluebell Railway.
Severn Valley Railway fleet:
BR Standard Class 4 4-6-0 75069
GWR 4900 Class 4930 Hagley Hall
LMS Stanier Mogul 2-6-0 13268
GWR 7800 Class 7812 Erlestoke Manor
SR West Country Class 21C127 Taw Valley

I went on both the Saturday and the Sunday and it was a great weekend. Saturday was great, I managed to go behind all the engines and on Sunday I specifically went for Erlestoke Manor's non-stop run and the two pannier tanks double heading later in the day, which didn't disappoint! I think my favourite of the visitors was 1369. I remember travelling behind her when I was younger and we went on holiday to Devon for a week and went on the South Devon Railway a couple of times. So she provided a nice nostalgia trip. And she's so little (is it weird to call a steam engine adorable?), I forgot how small she actually is! It's like the GWR took a dock tank from say, an ex-LSWR design and stuck some pannier tanks on it. Fenchurch was a very characterful (also miniscule) loco as well, which I guess is to be expected (not to mention that she apparently started some fires up Eardington Bank, oops!), and 29 was a good loco too, but I wasn't expecting her whistle to sound like that! It would've been nice to see Blue Peter running, but she was impressive regardless. The home fleet performed well, though 12368 was failed on Sunday morning.

Do you know if it was a significant failure on 13268 or a fairly minor one?

@@barneyward6448 Apparently she warped her ashpan. I don't know if that's a minor fault or a major one, but either way it's not ideal!

@@dominicbarden4436 Oh definitely not, hopefully shouldn't be too big an issue.
