Acute care is a branch of secondary health care where a patient receives active but short-term treatment for a severe injury or episode of illness, an urgent medical condition, or during recovery from surgery. In medical terms, care for acute health conditions is the opposite from chronic care, or longer-term care. Acute care services are generally delivered by teams of health care professionals from a range of medical and surgical specialties. Acute care may require a stay in a hospital emergency department, ambulatory surgery center, urgent care centre or other short-term stay facility, along with the assistance of diagnostic services, surgery, or follow-up outpatient care in the community. Hospital-based acute inpatient care typically has the goal of discharging patients as soon as they are deemed healthy and stable. Acute care settings include emergency department, intensive care, coronary care, cardiology, neonatal intensive care, and many general areas where the patient could become acutely unwell and require stabilization and transfer to another higher dependency unit for further treatment.

Thank you for this video! I am currently preparing to do a FNP program and planning to apply to their acute care fellowship program.

Yeah when I applied to my AGACNP program they asked about 10 times to make sure I didn't want to work in the ED because most EDs want FNP. I explained to them everytime that I saw the ED enough as a patient and as a paramedic.

Ya in adult ERs you can work there. Do you you plan to do trauma?

I worked in CCU for 6 months and left because it was taking a huge toll on my mental health. I really liked CCU but didn’t see it being sustainable for me. Do you think I could be better equipped going back as an acute care NP in CCU?

Being an acute care NP we would have similar stressors. I'd recommend picking something you feel more comfortable doing

Depends on the program. But in general you should wait for a minimum of 1-2 years

Depends on the state, most the time no except for some FNPs who were grandfathered in since they worked in the hospital before it was required to be acute care certified to round in patient. In general if you want to work in the hospital at all go the acute NP route.

is there any ways to get credentials to care for pediatric patients after completing my ACNP program?

You can go back for a post masters certificate in either family or pediatrics

They are the same. Family Nurse Practitioner is the actual certification

It really depends on your program. You build on your current knowledge. So it makes it easier when you have a good foundation. Biggest challenge was finding time to study between work and clinicals
