Settling The Power Grip Debate

Does the power grip actually give your backhand more power? Is the power grip the right grip for you? I’ll settle the debate here.

Good stuff, Scott. As a teacher of three different sports, over three decades, I have come to understand the following: I hear, and I forget. I see, and I remember. I do, and I understand.

same. been fan gripping everything for years and was scared to even try a power grip. Changed this summer, and while i feel like I'm kinda rebuilding by entire drive, it definitely feels more comfortable and correct.
Dude is so relatable. Not all great players can convey the message in their particular sport, this dude does. He actually listens...that's a huge first step. Everyone doesn't synthesize information the same.
Scott don't sell yourself short. You do in fact know more. By teaching thousands of hours and learning from your students you have gained far more knowledge than most could imagine having. So you do in fact "know" more than us. Thank you greatly for your humble and thoughtful approach to adding your knowledge to the conversation. This and all of your videos make us all better disc golfers and human beings. ✌️ ❤️

Worked wonders for my Berg game
I like overthrows the latest video where he explains back-mid-front loaded grips. My power grip has always put the most pressure through my ring finger. I've shifted it for my pointer finger and I get a lot more glide even out of my bad throws, I assume because of increased spin.

Uli has some grip videos and recorded clinics that agree with the different ways to load your grip and create consistency.
Outstanding. This really cuts through all the noise and will help a lot of players. It is depressing to be told "You must do it this way" only to realize that you can't physically do it that way.
Not gonna lie, IceBerg TV's video made me question my driving progress. I use a power grip on all my drivers, fanned grip for mids and putters. I do get a clean release with my driver power grip, therefore I'm not gonna change anything. However I will be more conscious with my grip for probably the next few weeks. Can we all just agree to wait for Scott's input on controversial topics before making any drastic changes and decisions?

Dude, I was re-working on form all last week all because of this. Before my drives were consistent 350+ with this "power grip" that's been almost mocked lately. But realized my hand size is too big for these "modified grips". I am working on my X step though. Trying to reach 400+ consistently.

Same here. I think it just depends on the shot and the person. What works for your form and hand. There is no one size fits all for grips.

Honestly, this debate was great for me. I started playing back in April. I started with some type of pinch grip, but was told by some other disc golfers that that's a "beginner grip", which is fine, but eventually I'll want to learn a power grip. So I've been practicing a power grip and it feels so awkward and uncomfortable. I'm looking forward to the next time I go out... my form has gotten a lot better, so I'm going to play with pinch grips again.
I'm about a month into Scott's online class and man has it been fantastic. He's so passionate about disc golf and teaching.
Great insights Scott! Keep it up; we need it.
Great video, Scott! Your advice here finally answered some confusion I've had in finding my own grip. Keep up the great content!
Thank you Scott! I was eager to hear you weigh in on this
We needed this one, thanks !
Sitting on my bed watching this. Had to get up and grab a disc. It’s a total different strokes type of thing. The fan grip is the most uncomfortable awkward grip for my hand. Power grip feels right and flies right.
This was so informational and pretty much contradicts everything I learned the first time around took a long time to find my comfort zone
Awesome vid. Thanks Scott. It was great to hear such a respected member of our community speaking about something so simple and basic it often gets over look. And with a wisdom that can only come frome years of experience. I wish you had added "and each situation" to this, but I'm definately going to try different grips on my next field work day.
Great video Scott. Love your teaching style.
Very insightful. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us. I can't wait to go out in the field and start experimenting with changing grips to see the results!
Always great to hear from Scott Stokely.
For me, I started out fan grip, when I played a lot I had painful chafing on my middle finger from the disc ripping out and I was throwing nose up a lot. I switched to a "power grip" and I don't get the chafing and I throw nose level. For me personally, I get more spin with a power grip but the best benefit is I can play every day without chafing. I found there's a microsecond difference in release between the two (for me) which results in the fan grip coming out sooner. Instead of trying to adjust my release point I run up straight at my intended line for fan grip and run up in an 11:00 position to my line for a power grip. Ya'll need to get off the disc golf course and go to a soccer field with NO WIND and really get to know your arm and your discs. You'll learn more about yourself in 15 minutes on a soccer field than 2 hours playing a round. Scott, you're a National Treasure.
Thanks for this! I feel like there's so much that people say is "the right way," but there's so much out there to parse and sort through. I've ended up with a modified front-loaded power grip, as I don't get clean release on fan grip, pulling off my front finger and backloading my grip in a comfortable way cost me distance.
I've discovered that my most consistent and comfortable grip is what I'm calling the "Bird" grip (think flippin' the bird). Like a power grip but with my middle finger extended under the disc. I tried fan grips and pinch grips and power grips and 3 fingers and none of them clicked until the "Bird". Love this video, Scott! Great advice!

This is an INCREDIBLY helpful video and an extremely professional/classy way of responding to the current debate. Well done, Scott.
Great video Scott. Very good info on grip.
This made me feel much better...Thank you Scott! Love your videos. I was taught a firm powergrip, but my hand wasn´t with at all! All it did was making me throw nose-up cause i couldnt press the disc down enough with my wrist. So i did my own grip that worked for me by letting my pinky rest on the side of the disc...but i always thought that i needed to learn to do it properly again because of the "norm". Now i can let that go and feel a little more confident!
Truth being Taught! I appreciate your time, talent and knowledge. Thank you for sharing Scott. 🤙🏼
Great video Scott!
Phenomenal video Mr. Stokely. Great information as usual that is usable and applicable. Your tips have helped my game tremendously, I thank you for that, sincerely. Thank you for the way you portrayed this video about the power grip. I am a power grip thrower for my tee shots, fan grip/pinch grip I guess for my mids, and fan grip for my putters when I throw them (not for putting though lol). Keep up the phenomenal work 😊💯❤
Consistency and accuracy is definitely where I need the most help. Thanks Scott!!
Two thumbs up. Well said Scott! Thank you for clarifying the debate.
Excellent lesson!!
thank you Mr Stokely, I am a newbie and you made me relax and mindful and not stiff and stuck in my head.
Great stuff. I have small hands and the power grip never felt comfortable. So I throw with three fingers, pinky floats.

Bruh you the Man period. Thanks Because i seen them videos this past week and haven't had a chance to go out yet due to work. Im very comfotable with the power grip because thats all i knew about. Further can be better. but consist is the key for me. Again Thanks
Enjoyed this video! Thank you!
Thanks for the clarification. I was a little disappointed that you didn't address the issue of spin. I think I'm one of the many who discovered that we haven't been getting the pivot and snap out of our throws. I tried the 2 finger throw recommended on Overthrow, and threw an amazing shot at 50% power that I didn't think my body was capable of. Snap, spin, hover mode activated. I'm now trying all sorts of grips like you talked about trying to find a comfortable one that will give me that effect consistently. There is something about focusing on the pinch point where the disc pivots out regardless of where the rest of your fingers are. I really would like an explanation. There are hundreds of us who have experienced something in the last week that we've never seen before, and to just brush it off and say that all grips are equal seems like an oversimplification. Any thoughts on spin and pinch points would be appreciated.
Thank you Scott for this video, I have for four years thrown a fan grip with my index finger on the rim for all backhand shots and I’ve made myself the last two weeks commit to a four finger grip and have immediately found more distance as reign in releasing correctly.
Thanks Great video as always❤️
Love the way you explained this

At time stamp 3:15 , you go into the exact conversion and debate a good buddy and I had recently. I've been a predominant RH FH INT/ ADV for 10 years. I just recently had to learn a dominant BH due to shoulder issues. Thank you for this!
Ive always done a modified version of both the pinch and power...the power pinch where i put pressure on my index fingers and rest of them are in a power grip formation. Love these vids scott!
If I could actually throw 300ft or farther, I would try it. I can't, so I'm sticking with the pinched fan grip. Thanks for all your content, its been a big help. I'll probably never stop learning what works best, but it's too fun of a game to not love it.

Love the shirt Scott!
What I've found is the pinch grip is great to create that fulcrum and have a forward loading discing for those open bombing shots with no guardians in the way. I switch to the "power grip" for my accurate shots needing a more middle loading zone for accuracy and then the fan grip for putting. Great information Scott
Great advice Scott. I had to change from the power grip to correct the nose angle of the disc, on release. My pinky rides under the rim, not inside the rim with the other fingers.
Thank you Scott
Love this video!
Thanks Scott, this has been on my mind alot lately as I realized I was one of those people being held back by the power grip. Adjusting my grip I find the disc is spinning much more out of the hand and I am getting more turn and distance out of every throw. On a swing but not releasing the disc, the disc wants to fly out of my hand much more and spin while the "power grip" just keeps it in place in my hand; less spin. Saying how there is no one-size-fits-all grip is the big takeaway here. Find what works to get that spin going + what is comfortable for you = a better technique than you had before. Thanks Scott!!!
You are awesome Scott
We had a discussion about the debate tonight at our league night. You are absolutely correct Scott!!! Different hands, different sizes, different feel. It's what works for you!!!!

Petition to change the name of the power grip to the first grip. Makes more sense
Thanks Scott. I've been watching this unfold in all the videos and frankly as a relatively new player it has been a bit confusing. great advice as always. :)
Something I struggle with is maintaining a strong grip while trying to keep my arm loose at the same time. I often tense my arm up as I try to get a firm grip
Loving the debate and adding your two cents. I think the biggest tidbit I've gotten out of this so far is that gripping with forefinger and thumb is more important on higher speed throws than the other fingers positioning, even though they all play a part. Gripping more with the pinky or back fingers and a looser forefinger or even floating forefinger can be more accurate/comfortable FOR ME on approach shots but was causing me to miss left/early RHBH on those higher speed drives.
Thanks for that. I’ve been trying the four fingers under the disc for a while now and it never seemed comfortable. I’ve now started throwing with my index finger on top of the disc and 3 fingers underneath and have increased my distance from 300’ to 350’. One finger on top feels a lot more comfortable than 4 underneath. It also helps keep the nose of the disc down as well.

Your one of the best discgolfer out there. And your videos are amazing. Could You please make a video about correcting The xstep. I tend to walk backwards with my xstep so my foot points backwards 45°
I agree, thank you! For me, for example, the grip changes also a little with different putters, in different plastics. On the contrary usually with mids and drivers I tend to use a 'power grip'. Only when I try to send the disc at maximum distance (very short, in fact, 😁) I give more importance to the 'pinch'.
Love the shirt! Awesome video! I use a fan grip when throwing my putter and midranges, and a power grip for everything else.🙂👍

Good stuff Scott!! 🙌🏻 been playing with both the pinch and fan grip, but haven’t yet found a favorite between all three grips. I do know that I will slowly move away from using the “traditional” power grip :)
I severely sprained my throwing hand’s middle finger in February. I started using a pinch grip as soon as my finger could handle it. Even though there is no way I can bend that finger into a power grip, I found I throw more consistently with my new “less” powerful grip. Purely because I was forcing an uncomfortable power for over a decade. Doing what is consistent & clean is the way to go. Thanks for the content Scott.

Just recovered from a similar injury. Used to power grip just about everything. One night while throwing destroyers my middle finger tweaked on release. Felt a shift and the pain came on suddenly. Inflammation set in for a week and could barely bend my middle finger. I now throw everything with a pinch-fan grip and have not had a single issue. Last night I broke the 450' mark. Star Corvette nice and low with a moderate flex, 463' with a much more comfortable pinch grip.

Certainly seems in favor of Overthrows explanation. I think the real culprit here is people power grip so hard they forget to pinch, so giving up the power grip let's you front load more. People could just learn to do both.

@@morehoops it's actually deeper but i see the level of engineering and intellect in the disc golf community is not really capable of understanding. So, yall f around f around and never get past the basics.
So I have an old injury to my throwing hand index finger. It cannot straiten all the way out and I cannot bent that finger at the first knuckle. I have been experimenting for a long time trying to figure out what to do with it other than cutting it off to get it out of the way hahaha. I have found that the pinch grip helps give me a place to put it since I cannot curl it under the rim. I have also tried just laying it out in a sort of modified fan/power grip where other than my index the rest are curled under the rim. Between the two I can see the pinch gets me more distance but the other gets me more control. I would love to hear other things for me to try if anyone has any input into this?!
Awesome video! I agree that this debate has been extremely illuminating and helped people out overall. I will say that Iceberg TV's video helped me explore my pinch/modified fan grip more, and I found that I can throw up to about 90% of my max consistently and comfortably with it. Then, for max drives, back to the power grip. I WILL say that learning more about other grips has helped my understanding immensely, and has also given me a smoother and more consistent release overall! Super exciting.
The authority speaks! And the answer is intuitive. Repeat a bunch of distance throws and I bet your grip on throw number 1000 is cleaner, stronger and more consistent than on throw number 10. No one had to tell me to tweak my grip when I was starting out and my releases were inconsistent, wobbly garbage. I just did it.
Nice video! 2:07 I do like it where you say, without irony, that it’s not because you know more than anybody else…then directly say it’s because you have a larger data set (data sets literally being “knowledge”, where larger = knowing more). Hilarious! Anyway, I learn a lot from your videos, thanks a lot!
love you!
This is GOLD!
Great dude right there
Disc golf is full of surprises. I used the power grip for years. I switched to Robbie Bratten style 2 finger grip last year and I was shocked that I didn’t gain any distance but I have way more control! Even works for my upshots. Haven’t gone back since.
Hey buddy. Remember " the boys" grip? Joe Ursino? He tucked his thumb under his forefinger on the top of disc? I use it in certain instances. My normal grip is I pinch my thumb ( on top of disc) against pad of middle finger ( on the bottom). My index is basically just along for the ride with the last two curled up tight against the rim of disk.. I am proud of being an O. G. of Oak Grove-- but it didn't exactly do wonders for our long game! and on the pro Tour that held back O. G's pros a lot. I remember the 1st trip to De Laveaga. I was like ' ok so tee off here, and where is the "post" again? You gotta be kidding me, way over there? That's it? I'm fu... ' it was brutal lol especially when we played every hole as par 3. Every hole on every course was par 3 as far as we were concerned. 1st worlds in Cincinnati in '88 I think? I remember saying over and over again ' you gotta be kidding me, really? Keep up the great work PS "the boy" was small in body, but he could throw as far as anyone with that grip

Any idea how to "rip" from index vs middle finger?
Stokely videos are one of the best things to happen to the sport of disc golf.
haha Scott, I was just laughing. In your classes you talk about the origin of the name and it's STILL confusing people apparently - exactly like you said 🤣🤣
I used exclusively fan grip as a youth player and drifted to power grip for all but my domey putter throws over time both from perceived better distance--but there was certainly a component that let that "power" term imply it was the proper thing to do. I do find that the flatter, and wider rimmed the disc the trickier the fan-grip got for me (not a problem in the early days as there was moderate dome on nearly all discs and those rims weren't big wings yet.) That and in less than ideal grip situations like rain I find the fan-grip harder to keep consistent. Your vid does though make me realize I haven't tried revisiting fan-grip/pinch grip for things above putter in decades. I could be missing out on a good thing. To the fields!
Great video as always. I will say that I disagree with one small point. You say that you can throw just as far with a power, pinch, or fan grip, and I just don't think a fan grip will ever have the distance potential as the other two. You said that the preference of grip trumps biomechanics, and I agree with this, meaning that if you prefer a fan grip, it will go farther. The key word is potential. Biomechanically, having the pressure of your fingers on the inside of the rim, opposite the target, creates a stronger grip that can hold more power and will put more force towards the target and more force into the rotation, causing more spin and more distance. Of course, Eagle is outdriving 99% of us with his fan grip, but he can throw a power grip farther. This is a technicality though, and I completely agree with your overall sentiment that grip is individual and there is no correct answer, especially when preference and personal results outweighs the "potential". Just a thought!

I have a video I'm going to make this Friday which touches on this subject, because I've seen a few people bring this issue up. But you're correct in that the power grip (as traditionally taught) provides the most power, and the pinch function also helps to create a fulcrum to do that. I think people should start there and work their way to what works best for them.
