Loving your figs. I think I am a few years behind you with my 30 or so plants, but they stay outdoors year round in zone 9a here. Thinking about a drip system since its a real pain to hand water these pots every day in the summer.

For your self-watering pot search... look into a rain gutter grow system. Basically, it's creating SIPs with rain gutters hung between 2x4's or 2x6's. You could beef up the outsides with bricks to hold the weight of your larger pots and figs. Good luck!

Good morning PA Hope the frost did not affect your figs this morning I use 21 inch half barrels the plastic ones from Home Depot I give them during the summer at least 1.5 gallons of water a day. If you lived in Florida with your relatives you could plant the figs in the ground and fish all year. Chazborn

Mine dry out and droop in the heat of summer too It stresses my plants so that near the end of the season there are lots of yellow leaves and rust, but they seem to pull through. Some varieties more than others. Still learning but enjoying these wonderful plants.

Those big tubs with rope handles are great pots to use. At feed/grain stores they have heavy duty versions. You might be able to put one of your large pots inside it for an easy SIP. Hope you have a banner season.

You can make a 10-50 gallon self watering pot out of two of the Rubbermaid Brute trash cans, which come in various sizes from 10 to 50 gallons. Just drill a bunch of little holes in one of the trash cans, and then use a 2-inch hole saw to cut a 2-inch hole in the bottom center of that same trash can, and put a 2-inch net-cup in there so it extends down into the water reservoir, which is the other trash can that you put it inside of. I hope that makes sense. I did this with a 5 gallon bucket and it works great, but it should work with these Brute trash cans too.

I'll check them out! The 5g buckets are too top heavy and fall over constantly once the tree gets tall.

@@PAFigs If you use the trash cans you can either not fill them up all the way with soil, or even cut the top foot or so off the top of the trash can so they are more squat and that should make it so they don't blow over.

I use the same type of pots and put them in 24in saucers, they can be a little expensive $10 - $15 a piece but they work great.

If you have an IKEA close by, look at their SIP's. About 5+ G size, much heavier side walls than any other I've found, top fill tower with a float water level indicator...and wheels! Wheels are not as good outside but still help and they're $20 but will far outlast all the others.

I believe I started 6 or 7 years ago. I rooted too many cuttings though and filled my orchard too fast. Now I am out of room and constantly have trouble separating with a tree to try new varieties 😞

  • @PAFigs

Any balanced fertilizer will work. I usually buy whatever is on sale. Just be careful not to overdo it on young plants. Organic fertilizers tend to be safer. I really like slow release fertilizers, but they can be expensive.
