I learn a little something from most of your videos sir. Thank you 🤘
Man, gorgeous kit!! And yes, those Evans 360 heads just fit right out of the box. Even though I'm a Remo guy, it's always nice putting Evans heads on some tubs.
Of course your 16" would sound bad ass. All of your drums do, honestly. As a guy with a perc degree, it's awesome seeing someone go through these things in this vlog sort of way, it's like watching a solid drum set lecture from school. Keeping it simple, reinforcing that drums and tuning are subjective, all the right things IMO. Love what you do, keep it up man :)

This was a really nice comment, man. Thankyou for the kind words!
Center hole for the kick has always been my fav. I never would have thought to put moongels on the inside of the reso tom. Genius little tone hack there. Props for the Incubus groove during the full kit play. I play that groove for sound check all the time. Thanks!
Yeah I heard the Incubus ”wish you were here” playing. Sounds great!
As a fellow Arizonan, I can confirm it's dusty here. You can clean something, look away for a moment, look back, and there's already dust on it again lol.
would love a video showing how you mixed the drums they sound great
I've been cycling through a million different drum heads, trying any and everything. Looking back on the choices of my youth as typical and un-artistic. Now that I've been through so many different heads, I'm back where I started; Evans Emad on the kick, Aquarian Hi-Energy on the snare, Remo pinstripes on the toms. A mish-mash, sure but that's always been what works for me. I also love Tama but really... I can't think of drum companies I _don't_ like. There's kits from all of them I want; Tama, DW, Ludwig, Sonor, Gretsch. They're all great companies really. Great content man, I always enjoy your posts!

I went thru a ton of heads recently too, and ended up back with pinstripes on toms, Aquarian Reflector coated snare, and Reflector kickdrum. The reflector coated snare head is really incredible.
I like to think my drum tuning is pretty good, no one in a session I've ever played on/engineered has ever complained in fact I've gotten compliments. With that said, watching your tech videos and hearing the drums with a ton of background noise and through a GoPro they sound incredible!! So when this popped up in my feed I definitely had to check it out (being a big Tama guy myself) and undoubtedly you brought this kit back to life! Excited for the December tech video 👍🏻

Thank you, dude!
Very calming to watch and listen. One of my favorite drum channels.
This was such a bad ass video. Thank you so much man. Those drums sound absolutely incredible between your tuning and playing. Excited for the next one!!
Your Drum POV´s are the best! I love it! THX a lot for that work and sharing this!
Awesome as always. Been a drummer for more years than i can remember and i learn something new every time i watch your videos. Thanks man!
Great video Matt! Probably the best tuning lesson I've ever seen and heard! And yes EMAD best bass drum head ever! 🥁❤️
Awesome man, thanks a lot for what you do! These videos are are super informative and fun to watch, I can’t get enough, keep ‘em rollin! 🤘🥁
Thank you SO much for making these videos Matt. I've learnt so much from what you do. Looking forward to your next videos!!!
Hey Matt. I’m 31, I’ve been drumming since I was 9 or something stupid. There’s always been allot of guess work when I have to tune drums, I’m not good it. But I’ve learnt that you don’t have to match every rod, one might sort the rest out. Cheers for that. Also I wanna say I get so pumped when you put a new video up, it really doesn’t matter how many subs you’re at right now.. your content is just as good as others with 100s of thousands. I’m a Tama nut too. I run a big heavy Starlassic Bubinga Elite. Keep up the good mate. Ryan, Tassie - Australia
I looking all over for those!!! That finish is AMAZING!!!!
Love Tama kits! Awesome job on the tuning as well. Great sound!
Great tuning man! It’s as a pleasure to watch you work!
really like this video! Cool to see you at home, playing your drums and getting them back in shape!
I truly enjoy every video you've made, Matt. I watch them all to the very end. You're a true pro man, and Luke is lucky to have the dedication, brother. Keep up the good work, and keep the vids coming! 🤘
You know, I'm never gonna be a drummer or drum tech, but man has your channel really improved my ability to communicate with real drummers and techs in my market. Thanks for the work you do, man!
this is a perfectly tuned set! well done. sounds fantastic! you could bring out a sample pack with these and it would go wild :)
Sounds amazing Matt Gotta love Tama and Evans
I'm simply addicted to watching your videos, and the whole process of cleaning, tuning... Keep up your work, it's great!
I own a Mapex Saturn kit with mounted floortoms, and we just recorded 4 song with it. Although i feel like there is an effect in resonance in comparison to floortotwith legs, we got them to sing beautifully. Honestly, my best tom sound to date. We also put some cotton balls in the toms to act as kind of gate, which really helped to control the everlasting resonance.
Great job man. I could watch your videos all day.
I mean this in the best way, but I love seeing your little OCD quirks in these videos like adjusting your drum keys on the table to be symmetrical and shit. I’ve been a drummer for 20 years, 28 now, I these same quirks follow me through every day life and I’m convinced it all comes from so many years of drums haha. So I’m not alone I guess idk 🤣 but I love your videos man thanks for these and the work you do!
Love your videos men, i always learn something about tuning, thank you for this.
Such a great professional Matt. Great player too
That’s a beautiful kit man. I finally got an acoustic kit after decades of not playing and I got the Tama Imperialstar kit. I absolutely love it and it’s their STARTER line. It sounds amazing to me so I won’t need to upgrade for a very long time. I use an alesis strike pro mainly but I loooooove my Tama
Your work is awesome. My wife now says she's a drum widow - so, sincere thanks!
I started playing in the 80's with a huge Rogers kit and was able to save up and buy a 5 piece Tama Swing Star in blue, loved how tight the sound was and loved that kit (toured up and down England). Ah the memories.
I have all my drums rack mounted on a pearl rack. 6 piece kit. I love it. Live the vids man!
Man I'm with you on the TAMA brand!! My first pro level kit was a TAMA Granstar Custom and I loved it! I currently have 3 TAMA kits and 1 Pearl kit. I have a Starclassic birch/bubinga, Starclassic birch/walnut, Artstar II maple, and a Pearl Masters maple/gum kit. Out of all of those the birch/walnut is my favorite kit.
Really enjoyed this, the drums sounded great! I love doing this probably as much as you do, lol.
My younger brother has a Star Classic with roughly the same dimensions and within those years. The kit sounds great! I’ve been a DW guy for years but if I was to change out….it would probably be on of these. Nice playing man!
This video is making me wanna experiment with balancing the harmonics of the heads and see what difference it makes. Hearing the drums so close up with no other noise is a really good reference!
They wont be a tree this year 🥰 Missed this
While I love the tech videos, this is what I needed to see today! 🤗 I’m not a drummer, my little one is. He’s currently on an acoustic style electric kit but needs an acoustic kit as he moves up the grades. There’s a brand new kit in boxes downstairs and I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed by having to tune them! 🫣 I have the same Evans heads to go on them so thank you for sharing this! You also helped me prepare for his first gig and it all went smoothly 👍 Thanks again! Not only entertaining but educational! 🇮🇪💚
This video reminds me of my 1985 Tama Superstar with 14” rack 16” floor. I sold it like an idiot. Fat and beefy tones, I dig it!
Hey that's awesome, I have a Starclassic B/B that I also got in 2007. Still sounds great! I haven't had a mounted floor tom since the kit before my starclassics, which was a Mapex Mars-Pro with TWO mounted floor toms lol. I actually loved them!
Love your videos man, new follower from Bolivia.
Really great video bro!!
Damn that kit sounds so good!
I bought my star classic in 97 right at the end of the year. I paid $3400 for my set up which included stands took me 4 1/2 years to pay it off on a credit card. I still play these drums to this day never bought anything else because I’ve never had to.
Being born in the mid 50's my first memory of drumkit would be early 60's which was vastly different from modern setups. Literally they would be 20" (22"), 16", 12" and probably a 14" snare, then a couple of cymbals. I followed Genesis from start to finish and Phil Collins' drum kit definitely grew over the years. Great post, really interesting, thank you 👍
That hi tom sounds GOOOD!
Thanks. Your video's realy help. With 4 to 6 rehearsals a week and 1 or 2 gigs a week in all kind of genres and groups, I travel a lot with drums and percussion and also have to select, tune, steup, etc. a lot. After gig the situation / atmosphere on / near stage changes very quickly. Your video's help to have a good approach and attitude also when performance is over. Mostly more time is involveld pre and after gig/recording than actual drumming. So for me important to give this aspect extra attention. Thanks!
Thanks for video man) Tama Starclassic my favourite drums and I have also drum set.)) have a nice day Matt🤘👋🏼
Yeeeaaahhhhhhh, good video, thanks, I watch alll your videos, tears from Brazil
For aspiring learners out there, If you are trying to learn how to tune, I would recommend trying to hear how the opposite lug that you are hitting bends up or down and what that means in terms of adjusting the tension for pitch. It will cut down on tuning time and let you understand how the sound moves around the drum. Another tip : When I was first learning how to tune and couldn't figure out how to distinguish between an lug being higher or lower from one another - I would play the jaws 'duuuuun dunnn' theme in my head. ^.^ As always, ty for the vid Matt! O7
Since knowing 7 instruments been wanting to give drumming a try. Theses videos been good to watch before buying my first kit. Don't know what to get but going to try them out and pick the best.
What's up brotha! Hope the time off is good! Gonna be at The Armory too, hope it doesn't snow again on the way out lol. Should be a nice hold over until take back your life starts. Enjoy brotha!
Love the dropping the gels inside the head sweet
30:58 "I think it sound pretty good" Are you kidding me? I couldn't get a better sounding drums not even with samples😂 That was AWESOME🔥

I was legit hoping this was the set you used in Mr. Whipple. Still awesome that these are so old. Glad to see you doing well man

Waddup Max! I sold that kit loooooong ago haha
Crazy. I also just recently got out my old tama kit for a clean up and new heads. I usually play on smaller bop style kit but we have got some bigger shows coming up with my band and figured a "big boy" kit would be nice. I actually got these as payment for a video I did in like 2009 and the have just been kicking around. I dug into them a bit more and realised it was a '86 Superstar. I've always loved the way it sounds and now that I've given it some TLC the kit sounds killer.

Just finished the video and hot damn do those drums sound good. Nice one Matt!
That sounds amazing 😍
This is so cool to watch
Actually i never even thought about putting moongel inside the reso. Im totally trying that out. Thanks man 🤘
Love your videos matt
Hi Matt from local band "CONJURO from New Brunswick"is our pleasure to see you 🇲🇽 🤘🏻
Love your videos. I’ve got a Tama Star classic snare that I use with my Mapex Saturn kit. It’s amazing. My kit has a 20x22 kick drum. That’s 22” deep. It’s awesome.
This is my AMSR. That snare sounded nice and robust. I punted Remo to Ridicville a few years ago for Evans. For me, they adapt to whatever tuning I use. I have my original Pearl Session 94 (3 rack, 1 floor, back to two kicks) *Quick plug: I switched from the DW 9000s to the Pearl Demon direct drive. They're amazballs, and you can split them into two single pedals👍 DW, for the love of dog, PLEASE do something with the drive shaft. They're a turd on a Mercedes. Swapping it for the Trick shaft shouldn't be the case, yet I had to do that. Great vid. Solid playing. Love what you're doing. I look forward to your next one. Side note: I don't remember if it was Episode 1 or 2 of POV I forgot to put captions on. "Is this guy gonna fricken say ANYTHING!? Oh wait, turn on captions dopey.".
I’ve had a hell of a time tuning my 1998 rockstar custom that has been gigged, stored in a garage attic in so cal, a storage unit, setup in a garage in so cal for years. The kick still sounds amazing but the toms… never been great but it’s my first “real kit” and I’ve had it since high school in 98.
First time seeing moongels used on the inside of the reso head. A variation of the cottonball dampening method. Nice.
Turned on CC just out of habit! Thanks for this- definitely a resource I’ll come back to
Evans has technology that seats them better than the competition and tune way easier that’s how you were able to dial the sound in quicker. I love my 16 inch suspended mount floor tom.
Nice playing on Turnstile’s “Can’t Deny it” at the end!
Love your new vlog! Hey.. remember your very first drum kit. I knew nothing about drums 😂

I vividly remember the whole trip to guitar center that day haha
That sounds pretty damn good🤘
Very good sounding drums here :)
@matthorndrums - Amazing, man. Picked up a starclassic kick at a yardsale which led me go your vid. I HAVE to know what crash cymbal that is on your far right. It has my ideal sound!
Great Kit Matt ! Makes me wanna break out my Pearl Session Customs. Haven't played them in 4 years, Been using my Premier Kit as the Pearls are in Flight Cases Ready to Tour :)
hi matt! I live in Brazil and I love your videos
I try not to be a brand guy but Evans are just so good! Got an Emad 1 on a 14x24 no dampener and it's straight boom boom.
The tama starclassic the japan made is the best…i never stopped playing mine and its all I use…I do have a custom order star snare…its a 1 of 💪🏽 Tama all the way!! Tama is also my favorite drum manufacturer. And I’m the psycho that likes floors on air ride…my 14 and 16 are on a double Tom stand
You're 100% right about those EMAD heads. I have them on my Pearl Exports (both batter and reso) and the thing sounds AMAZING. Perfect, fat sound from it. Hydraulic heads are also amazing for toms. I'm going to keep the Remo Powerstroke and pinstripes on my Yamaha Beech custom tho cause I like the way it sounds lol
Literally was thinking "ew a mounted floor tom" and then you said something immediatley after hahah
Love the vid!
Love a good mounted floor Tom especially a 15x13.
Great sound. Broo...
Tama star classic maple drums are great drums. The old ones with rerings were special. Same with the old and now new again Pearl masters with rerings. Kit sounds great man. Super thick. No weird overtones. Hard to tune thin shells like that.
Your vids are so cool always wanted to be drum tech I just love gear but playing 28 years I do want to get into it, Ireland is small oul country though. Keep them coming
The first gen birch starclassics were THE BOMB!
I have a '85 or '86 imperial star kit. Can't remember exactly the year. Bought them at IRC music in Indianapolis. They were aspen white now have that old yellowish look that makes them look so cool. 6pc kit and Tama is hard to beat.
Nice video. Thanks dude
Bro, you are straight GOATED! Those drums sound fantastic! Would like to see a video of how you mix your drums? Also what kind of headphones are those?
Sound pHat asf. Thanks for sharing!
Awesome man, I'm about to change top/bottom heads on a new (to me) Tama Imperialstar, all Evans! I've also heard that cotton balls inside the floor tom helps with resonance.

Give it a shot and report back! I meant to do that in this video actually
love it!!
Best drums ever made.
Those were the best star classics.
I have a late 90s Starclassic birch and both my floor toms are mounted on a heavy duty tama stand. I really wish they had legs though, the stand is annoying and it moves way too much. I still love my kit and won't even get rid of it, but it's the ONE gripe with this era of Tama. Love the color and sound of this kit, maple is always a great sounding wood.
Matt. bottom heads the same amount of force as the top head. The air inside the drum. Moves with the same force as the top head being struck by a stick and the physics state that if the bottom head is tighter then the top head. The bottom head will wear out faster. As it's under a higher load.
Excellent!
25:00 “It looks like I’m playing for some SJC Warped Tour band.” Ain’t that the truth? 🤣🤣🤣
