Setting Up A Separate Front of House and Monitor Mix Using the X/M32 Mixers

Hello, my name is Dana and I have been recording audio for 45 years. I am the owner of D & L Studio LLC located in Honaker Virginia. Audio is fun! Mixing and mastering is really quite simple once you learn the basics. After that, it can only be enhanced by gaining experience. Gaining experience comes from doing! Nice one man! I was just looking for a solution to this problem (musicians that want a different mix because in there monitor things sounded to toppy, but if I would EQed like that wanted on stage in FOH would sound dark )very easy and well explained. Cheers mate.

My 5 cents as a vocalist: FOH will sometimes drown vocals in reverb/delay and I don't want to be hearing any of that. Then again it's an easy fix for monitoring, just have your IEM sends pre insert and you're good. But if the engineer wants to add an insert before EQ (for instance to knock some of the high end off after reverb), your only option would be to send the input and you lose compression, gate etc. So in that case I'd rather duplicate the input and use another channel with my own EQ curve for monitoring. Also makes a ton of sense if you want your IEM signal heavily compressed and gated (especially for rock vocals, I want it pretty much brickwall limited so I don't blow my eardrums every time I belt), but that's not the case for FOH mix where you probably want the least amount of gating possible and the signal a bit more dynamic. When playing guitar it's a similar situation when it comes to drums. Guitarists would love to hear a very "clicky" and compressed kick and snare drum signal that cuts through the IEM mix, so tons of compression, very aggressive EQ. You don't want any of that in your main mix.

Since IEMs have come down in price, many people are starting to buy them. It's no longer you get what everyone gets such as using stage monitors. People now have the option to have a very detailed custom mix sent to their buses. Very seldom does everyone want the same mix. Thanks for your input.

Im with you on that Dana, its not ideal for iem mixes to do this. But this would be awesome if you want to use it for broadcast stream mixes with 2 mix engineers. That way you can manipulate them both separately.

Hey Dana, great video. Would setting the sends to Bus to "input" instead of "pre-Eq" bypass the dynamics section of the channel on it's way to the monitor 1? I don't like using any dynamics on the monitors, causes feedback, but I still would like to 32 inputs. Any help would be much appreciated. thank you, fern

I just tried to see if it would and it does not bypass the channel strip processing regardless of the "Sends" position to the mix buses.

For our band we run backtracks out of our x32 so the FOH mix had everything and our IEMs have backtrack only

Dana - Great lessons! But, What is the video screen image that you show here? (It doesn't look like the screens on my x-32 Compact) I am sometimes confused about how your screens differ from the screens on the X-32 Compact. I am having trouble understanding how the channel numbers relate to inputs or outputs on the S16 stagebox. Is it true that banks of 8 channels must be either in console OR using AES-A port to Stagebox? IE: In the Routing Screen, Channels 1-8 must be elected to be Local or Aes-A- True? It is hard to see if these are inputs or outputs, isn't it? Can you shed some light on this? Can you please put your camera on the console screens? That would be a lot easier to follow. Thank you!

Good morning. I use the X32 Rack and I don't have a setup to show the screens on the Rack itself. I don't know why your screen looks different then mine using X32 Edit, other then I may have customized my banks, aka, layers. Any input coming from the mixer will always be "Local" and any inputs coming from stage boxes will either be AES50 Port A or Port B, depending on your routing setup.

Dana, This seems like a good work around for a question I posted in the Facebook group earlier. Although maybe it's not the best way. I'm not educated enough on the subject yet. But my goal was to allow the vocalist or anyone for that matter to hear whatever effects they might want in their monitor mix on any given channel they send to their bus. With this method (and please correct me if I'm wrong) wouldn't any effects edit on any "split channel" be audible in everyone's monitor bus if they choose that channel in their bus? I guess that's ok, but maybe the vocalist is the only one that wants to hear the effects and the rest of the group not so much. If there's a better way I'd like to know about it. I'll keep watching and learning. Thank you

You are on the right path. If the vocalist was the only one that wanted to hear some reverb on their voice, then they would add that FX Return into their monitor mix. If the drummer wanted to hear the vocalist without the reverb, then the drummer would simply exclude that FX Return from their monitor mix.

Hi Dana! Could I use this method with a behringer x32 rack connected to a s18? If not how do i mix FOH with an IPad and have the musicians do their own in ears on their phones? Gear used X32 Rack S16 with cat5 Ipad (Foh)

Not really. You would add the click track using the Sends on Fader feature. By using this feature, you would add the click track into your IEMs while at the same time, going to the click track and remove it from the main stereo outputs.

X32 How do you switch two channel faders to one monitor without going to the main front of the house?

  • @DanaTucker1

Just take the two channels out of the mains and send them to the buses you need them on.

Not following this. Your routing tab shows local inputs 17-24 assigned to channels 17-24. Why do channels local inputs 1-16 show up on channels 17-24?

It is called a Internal Split. It allows you to mix the Front of House totally separate from your monitor mix. In other words, you have effects that will be used for FOH, and a completely different set of effects that will be sent to your monitors, In Ear or Stage.
