SET UP YOUR NEW SURFBOARD | Detailed Tutorial | Tailpad, Fins, Leash & Wax
Спорт
Here's how to set up your new surfboard as soon as you pick it up from the shaping bay. In this detailed tutorial, Kale walks us through selecting some great fins, a tail pad, a leash, and the right wax.
He shows you
- how to put a tail pad on a surfboard
- how to put a leash on a surfboard
- how to wax a surfboard &
- how to put fins in a surfboard
Sometimes it can be a little overwhelming trying to figure out what equipment you actually need for your new board, and that's why we shot this video.
There really are only 4 things you need.
Do you have another essential that you think we should have discussed? What're your favourite accessory brands?

Hey mate. So I just started surfing 2 years ago and the past month you've progressed my abilities so much. From popping up smoother to riding with confidence. Thank you,I should've checked you out a while ago but I've always had like a chip on my shoulder and do it my way but I'm breaking out of that. Thank you bro

What's going on How To Rip, I'm a South African surfer. Funny thing about our swells, we actually get better sets when the weather's super cold. I've had to change my wax from tropical to cool in some Winters. This vid was a huge help when I got my new board for my birthday! I've been renting my boards up until now and I'm so stoked to finally have my own! Keep up the good work 🤙🏼

Thank you for putting these informational videos out there!!! I just learned to surf and am In the market for a high performance board? Any recommendations? I know this is late but wanted to know Thank you!!!!!
Hi Kale, It was really informative and unlike many videos it was not boring at all. I enjoyed every moment. Just can you please tell me some of the retail shops that I can get good price and boards ? ( the one you went to buy for example) Thank you
YES love the face slap cut scene!
Cool tip if your pad does start flapping off after the first few surfs- Lift flap and heat the glue using a hair dryer. The heat activates the adhesive. It will never come off again.
Great video, I’d recommend cleaning the deck with alcohol and drying it before sticking trac pads down. One never knows what greasy hands have touched the tail of the board.
9:59 It's an Overhand Loop knot. Personally I like to loop the rope through the plug then tie it and keep the rope as short as possible. Less chance to lose leach rope if you take leach off.
Love all the instructional videos. Met Sally Fitzgibbons today.

Awesome video! What are your thoughts on the traction pad vs wax? Best, B
I wax the tail pad too, not sure if I’m the only one 😂
An important distinction: you can’t really choose between FCS or Futures. Your board will (most of the time) come with one or the other. Futures fins have more of a sturdy base and need a tool to install and remove. If you hit the fin hard on something, you may damage the fin box itself along with the board and fin. FCS II can be installed and removed without tools. They have less base to them that interact with the fin box. If you hit the fin on something, it may just rip out or break at the tabs. As opposed to destroying the fin box and board. Just depends what you want. Both are solid fins. Do you prefer a solid fin that’s harder to swap? Or a slightly more fragile fin that’s easy to replace and swap and move around.
So you reckon surfing in jeans and a shirt is best. Haven’t tried it personally but sounds like an epic idea😂 awesome vid, thanks for the tips.

In the past my tail pads would annoyingly get loose at some point. But now when putting a brand new tail pad I reinforce it with super glue near the edges and corners (like 1 cm from the edge), and they simply last forever.

Try alien traction pads
I would say having the tail pad parts together would not make a big difference, as long as they are centered. Not at least for a beginner-intermediate surfer. What do you think @kales?

How does the brown base maintain the stickyness after you take it off? 5cm how big is that 30mm? because it looks like you put it 30mm above the leash plug, maybe measure it? I need the facts.

Why not using an alternative to wax? Like the Van der Waal surf grip for example? I have on my surfboards and they stick well, and I don't have to worry anymore with melting wax or having sand on it. Worth a try

Can you put a traction pad for a fish tape borad
FYI The knot on the leg rope is called a simple overhand knot...nothing fancy
Here's my question. I've never been one to use a traction pad. Always wax. I was watching a video on pop ups and the perfect place to stand on your board, and where you stood up your traction pad was actuallyThree or four inches behind your back foot. What is the true purpose of the traction pad? When is it used?
@thatguy5054
4 жыл бұрын
Adam b a traction pad is for the purpose of he tail being extremely gripy because your front foot should be able to move around but your back foot should always stay in place
@The_Dirt_Merchant

@@thatguy5054 Thank you for the clarity. I always wax the crap out of the tail section to keep my back foot from slipping so much. I'm going to give a trac pad a shot and see if it helps. Thank you once again for your help!

Some people like the feel of traction pads, some don’t. I move both feet around when I surf. But I like having my foot as far back as possible when ripping and linking turns/maneuvers. My pad helps me know where my foot is. I’ll also drag my foot off of the traction pad when riding the barrel (sometimes), as this will help generate more speed.

Yeah for sure. I love the board as well - it's probably the best one I've ever had because I feel really confident putting it on rail but also going to the air. And for some strange reason, it seems to enhance my backhand surfing like no other board I've ever had. In order for us to do more reviews on their boards we need some support from them as otherwise it gets too costly. :(

If u had a hybrid 8’6” where would u place the pad? I feel like i’m (maybe incorrectly) riding with my feet on the front two thirds of the board - would love the traction pad but am afraid it might dictate placing my back foot in the wrong (or not where im comfortable) position.

You don't need a pad on a board that size
@justsurf185
4 жыл бұрын
Always but the traction pad so that your back foot is directly over or slightly behind the back fin. It’s a pretty kooky move to put the traction pad further up. Even if that’s where you’ll mostly be riding the board. Traction pads are typically for ripping tight turns and maneuvers. You’ll need your foot as far back as possible to do tight turns.
