SET UP YOUR NEW SURFBOARD | Detailed Tutorial | Tailpad, Fins, Leash & Wax

Спорт

Here's how to set up your new surfboard as soon as you pick it up from the shaping bay. In this detailed tutorial, Kale walks us through selecting some great fins, a tail pad, a leash, and the right wax.
He shows you
- how to put a tail pad on a surfboard
- how to put a leash on a surfboard
- how to wax a surfboard &
- how to put fins in a surfboard
Sometimes it can be a little overwhelming trying to figure out what equipment you actually need for your new board, and that's why we shot this video.
There really are only 4 things you need.
Do you have another essential that you think we should have discussed? What're your favourite accessory brands?

What's going on How To Rip, I'm a South African surfer. Funny thing about our swells, we actually get better sets when the weather's super cold. I've had to change my wax from tropical to cool in some Winters. This vid was a huge help when I got my new board for my birthday! An important distinction: you can’t really choose between FCS or Futures. Your board will (most of the time) come with one or the other. Futures fins have more of a sturdy base and need a tool to install and remove. If you hit the fin hard on something, you may damage the fin box itself along with the board and fin. FCS II can be installed and removed without tools. They have less base to them that interact with the fin box. If you hit the fin on something, it may just rip out or break at the tabs. As opposed to destroying the fin box and board. Just depends what you want. Both are solid fins. Do you prefer a solid fin that’s harder to swap? Or a slightly more fragile fin that’s easy to replace and swap and move around.

Some people like the feel of traction pads, some don’t. I move both feet around when I surf. But I like having my foot as far back as possible when ripping and linking turns/maneuvers. My pad helps me know where my foot is. I’ll also drag my foot off of the traction pad when riding the barrel (sometimes), as this will help generate more speed.

Always but the traction pad so that your back foot is directly over or slightly behind the back fin. It’s a pretty kooky move to put the traction pad further up. Even if that’s where you’ll mostly be riding the board. Traction pads are typically for ripping tight turns and maneuvers. You’ll need your foot as far back as possible to do tight turns.

I suggest buying surfboards based off of volume. Check out JS industries surfboard volume calculator. You can put in your information and it will suggest a surfboard volume. Shopping by volume is probably a lot easier if your getting started.🤙

Wax in tropical never stays on for me ive since moved to front and back traction pads anyone else like traction vs wax ?

  • @j3in725

Yes, no wax needed and it also gives some extra protection to dings on top of the board

Traction on the tail only! It’s a mental thing for me, because front traction works great. I just feel weird surfing with it. Like brushing my teeth with my left hand. I live in the tropics too, my wax melts off. Base-coat does help a little.
