Mistakes Happen, But Recovery is Possible! This video documents the journey of a Cattleya cernua orchid that thrived on a mount but declined after being potted. The owner, concerned about maintaining moisture in their dry climate, potted the orchid hoping for better growth. Unfortunately, the opposite happened.
Key Takeaways:
Cattleya cernua prefers mounts in dry climates. While potting might seem ideal for moisture retention, this orchid may not adapt well.
Root health is crucial. The video highlights the importance of healthy roots for orchid success.
Remounting can be a solution. When an orchid struggles in a pot, remounting it on its preferred medium can help revive it.
Provide proper care. The video emphasizes the importance of watering based on the orchid's needs and chosen medium (mount vs. pot).
Learn how to:
Identify signs of a struggling orchid (shrivelled pseudobulbs, root loss)
Carefully remove an orchid from a pot
Remount a Cattleya cernua on a cork bark mount
Secure the orchid with wire while minimizing damage
Utilize alternative materials like HOB filter media for added humidity
This video is a valuable resource for orchid enthusiasts, especially those facing challenges with Cattleya cernua care in dry climates. #orchideen #orquideas #orchideenpflege #beginners #tipsandtricks #tips #mounts #tricks #tutorial

HI Denise 😍💐 hope you are already at the end of your week and able to enjoy a nice Friday early evening, to welcome in the weekend 🥰 thank you for your best wishes for this cernua. She has given me grace with signals in the past season while in the pot, so, I hope that now she notices that I saw her, I heard her and have given her what she prefers 🙏🏼 however, she does not know organic mounts, but... this is better than inorganic and trying to keep her happy based on her current size.... here's me hoping 😆 thank you so much for watching, lovely lady!! I hope your day was fabYOUlous 🫶🏼❤️🌸

FFF 😍🙌🏼🤸🏼‍♀️🥰💐 good evening, amiga mia! 🫶🏼 I hope that you are doing well, hopping skipping and jumping around in your beautiful garden paradise 🙏🏼😘 when it comes to this one back on a mount, I have my feelings about it. I really would have preferred to have had her grow well in the pot but, here we are! She has not bloomed as well year on year, since being in the pot, as she was doing on her mount. So, I get the hint and I am keeping my fingers crossed that I interpreted her signals correctly. I appreciate your encouraging prediction! Hope I can say 'Fernanda! You were right! LOOK!!' in a video in the future! Thank you so much for watching, amiga mia 🫶🏼 thinking of you ❤️🌸

Eureka,Eureka! I came across the correct method of growing cattleyas accidentally Nina- MOUNTING. On our visit to a convent some three months back, some abandoned guava trunks struck my sight. I picked them up. I plucked a potted stagnant cattleya, divided it into three and mounted them on to the guava trunks. To my surprise, these three cattleya divisions started growing .New shoots.Itvis funny to see the new roots growing to new depths. My Observation: Cattleyas do love occasional dryouts. And mounting is the only method to provide occasional dry outs loved ny cattleyas. I hope the remount of your cattleya ceruma will usher in vigorous new growth Nina .

🌸🥷🏼 Director Jose Joseph! 😍🙌🏼🤸🏼‍♀️🥰💐 it is so good to see you, amigo mio!! And yes, you are right... not just cattleyas grow best mounted, but any epiphytic orchid would prefer to grow mounted. However, it is not feasible for many growers to do, especially those that have to grow indoors and care for orchids within the perimeter of their private homes, sometimes with carpeting 😓 so, pot growing, while not ideal, is what most have to do. And, as in my case, keeping up with the care of the orchid as it increases in size also comes with challenges if the climate is super dry, and windy. I learned my lesson with this little one and hope that in the coming 12 months she will have recognized that I saw her / heard her and that she can now get back to what she knows to do best, and that is, growing 🤞🏼 Another thing, imagine mounting a Guarianthe Guatemalensis 😳 if I had a big garden, with no winter.... we would be climbing trees to do orchid videos and look at blooms 🤣😆 I am SO happy to hear that your cattleya is livin' la vida on the guava trunk! That is going to be a happy bloomer very soon. I LOVED watching roots grow in Kenya. Suddenly from one day to the next, they weren't 'there anymore' but had grown to 'over there' 😂 fantastic!! So happy, 🌸🥷🏼Jose Amigo! I hope you are having a wonderful wonderful weekend already, my friend 🫶🏼 please say hello to your Princesses for me, if you happen to speak to them 🥰 thank you for watching 🫶🏼❤️🌸

Truly appreciate the support 🫶🏼 you found a cernua at a plant market? That is amazing and yes... great luck! In your conditions, yes, .... she is not going to like being in a pot. I tried, I got lucky enough to be able to watch her progress (the lack thereof) in my dry climate in a pot, and well... NO! They are vigorous little orchids once they get accustomed to their new surroundings, so, I am sure that it won't take long for your's to take off! Besides, they are a cooler growing mini... you have the right conditions 👍🏼 big bonus!! Wishing you a fabulous day, and once again welcome! 🫶🏼❤️🌸

Ho Nina, I've tried many times to mount orchids on cork. It just doesn't work in my environment, to dam hot. The plants do not get a temp drop at night it just stays hot like a 100f hot. Remember I cooked several Cattleya last summer. Great video on mounting, later Orchid Master.❤😂🎉😊

🌸🥷🏼 Bob San 😍🙌🏼🤸🏼‍♀️🥰💐 good morning from a sparkling sunny day in S'ern Spain! The coast is showing off today, living up to it's name, Costa del Sol 😅 it gets very hectic with orchids mounted on cork, I fully agree! Even though I do not experience the heat that you are up against, the fact that it is so windy here, makes for a challenging season for my mounted orchids and I have to be ON it to keep them damp, hydrated and not have them stressed out, get frazzled. That is why I thought, potting this orchid up would be a great idea to help with the amount of water she needs.... clearly, she was not a happy camper and didn't bloom as well as she used to when she was just hanging around. I hope that in the coming season she will notice that I picked up on that and will reward us with better growth, despite the care challenges I face with her being on a mount now 🤞🏼 so yeah, I get it. Also, that is why you see all the previous inorganic mount remnants on the orchids I mounted last year. Just to help me out with the moisture and leave the roots in that material alone. I am a little anxious to say the least! 🫣 No more cooking orchids, 🌸🥷🏼 we learn! I have cooked some of mine in the past years ... it happens very quickly, unfortunately 🫶🏼 really appreciate you watching, 🌸🥷🏼 Friend San! I hope that your Friday will be a FUNday! 😍 Hi Shirley 💐 thank you so much for watching and your comment, lovely lady! It is so good to see you 🫶🏼 they are hard to get growing well, but once they settled down, they do just fine. While this one was on an inorganic mount, she was happy, I just thought that I would make her even happier in a pot... nope! Her blooming reduced considerably as well. No surprises with the lack of roots to sustain blooms. So, 🤞🏼 she gives me another chance and I do not loose too much of her moving forward 🙏🏼 I am sorry that you lost your's, Shirley! I hope that when you come across another one, that you will try again. She is an adorable little orchid 🥰 wishing you have wonderful Friday, lovely lady 🫶🏼❤️🌸

My Cernua has done great on a mount of cork slab, but I had to remove the extra moss I added when mounting it as it didn't seem to like it, then found out that they like a good watering but like to be mostly dry by evening. Since removal of the extra moss it has taken off. I just mist it in between the watering schedule. It does love the humidity though....😅 🐝

🦤🦅😍 I hope that mine bounces back! I am at it daily, keeping that mount wet as best as possible, in the hopes that it will not collapse on me! Luckily, I had several season with it in the pot without loosing it as fast as I did my coccinea, once I potted her up, so.... 🤞🏼 that this little one is more resilient and will make a comeback. All I want is roots... roots to come through on to the mount. Don't care if it blooms or not 🙏🏼 I am very apprehensive atm, that is for sure! Thank you so much for watching this video as well! Thank you, so much for ALL your support, Wingman! So appreciated 🫶🏼❤️🌸

@@NinjaOrchids don't keep it to wet, that's why mine started to go down. Alan at Gold Country Orchids said it likes humidity but likes to be dry over night... Once I did what he said it has done much better. He also told me use very little feed on it as it can be fussy if given to much. It's a slow grower too as well. 🐝

Oh, let me qualify what I mean when I say that I am keeping the mount wet. I am watering the wood more during the day, not the orchid itself. I am hoping to increase the humidity around the orchid by keeping the mount damp on several occasions during the day, especially when it is windy 🤞🏼

If the others that you moved to mounts are any indicator, I think she will be much happier in the long run. Meanwhile, my cernua aurea that I've had for two years, that is on a mount without moss and always has been, had been growing beautifully, just started dropping leaves and shriveling growths. I cut into it, no purple, I don't see any scale, so I don't know what is going on. I haven't changed anything about the care, it is quite odd.

Don Miguel 🥰💐 hola jefe! I hope that you are right... I am lucky if she does come back and stays in the collection. After potting up my vigorous coccinea and then loosing her so fast, this one, at least tried for several seasons. AND, I am so glad that I could watch her not being as proliferous in her blooms as she was when she was on a mount. Not surprised after taking her out of the pot and seeing she hardly had any roots after all these years. 🤞🏼how weird that your's is pretty much doing the 'same thing' but on a mount, while growing well all these years? How are her roots? You see the state of mine. I mean, I am used to her shrivelling a little bit while on the mount in past years, but that is culture related when coming out of late winter, and after blooming. However, I do not like the raisin look of my pseudobulbs. That is not the shrivel of years past. So, how are the roots on your's? hopefully it is just a little glitch in her matrix and there is a reset. 🙏🏼 hope you are having a great day, amigo mio! Its been nice and toasty here, no wind, so I could actually get to the garden centre to find some inner pots to fit masks I bought last year, when they did not have inner pots to fit. Glad I sourced them because I have a few broken pots to replace 🙄 thank you so much for watching! Have a great rest of your day 🫶🏼❤️🌸

Thanks so much for sharing this video. I can't tell you how many times I have changed some orchids from mounting to potting and vice versa. I've just about given up and only do that if I find that the plant isn't doing well. Perhaps we sometimes overthink the fact that we might not be able to provide the "right care" for a specific plant. My "rule of thumb" now is that I don't change the way the plant is growing (mount or potted) unless it is having issues. I try to take note of whether or not I am truly providing the care that specific plant needs and make adjustments to my care. Hope that this little plant does well for you. I look forward to seeing this plant doing well on its mount in a future video. A couple of questions for you. What is the difference between Guarechea and Prothechea cochleata? Both have very similar flowers. Do you have any knowledge about Sobennikoffia robusta? I have one in my collection that looks as though it is becoming dehydrated. I currently have it in a small plastic open pot with some large charcoal. My online research discovered that someone recommended planting it in a shallow pot with pumice. I think this plant should be treated like an angraecum. My angraecums are in deep pots in bark medium. They are doing fine. Any ideas for the Sobennikoffia?

Hi Pat 😍💐 thank YOU so much for watching! I truly appreciate you taking the time to hang out on the patio with me for a little bit 🫶🏼 Oh! Early days, I totally over thought what I was seeing with the orchids in pots. In Kenya, I had them in trees and that was it, but once coming to Europe and having to grow them in pots, that is when the wheels started turning. Now, with the inorganic media, another learning curve was needed 😆 for me, I have learned to leave stressed orchids alone. UNLESS, I cannot water them enough based on their set up, OR, as in this case, I have had several seasons to compare the progress or the lack thereof. As much as I want to fiddle with my orchids in the hopes to reduce their issues and do better, I have learned that, if after several attempts with different combinations, set ups etc, if an orchid doesn't do well then possibly it is the environment and there is nothing I can do to make it better. At least not at this point in time. I hope to be able to report back that we have 'touch down' as far as new roots reaching the mount! I don't even mind if she chooses not to bloom this coming winter. Just focus on new roots and I will be happy 😬🤞🏼 So, I think we have a name + genus confusion here when it comes to Prosthechea and Guarechea cochleata. To my understanding, there is no Guarechea cochleata. Instead, Prosthechea cochleata is the genus / species and Prosthechea cochleata is one of the parents that make up Guarechea Black Comet (as an example). Sobennikoffias, indeed, need to be cultivated very similar to angreacums. It is in the angrecoid family. I had one, Sobennikoffia humbertiana, but she did not make it through my cold and darker winters. So, your robusta, its all in the name (Robust) it is one of the more forgiving Sobennikoffias, which is a huge plus! Please do not expose this orchid to direct sun. They like a lot of light, but it should not translate into direct sun. Lots of airflow on hotter days and well, you have the humidity which this one LOVES, up to 85% consistently is what it gets where it is found naturally! I would not expose it to temperatures below 64ºF. If you can, water water water. These LOVE their water! They are considered semi terrestrial, because like slipper orchids, their roots are in well draining sandy, gravel kind of soil covered in leaf litter and other natural organic debris. So, your charcoal is great for the aeration, as long as the roots are damp all the time. OR, if not damp all the time, compensated with high humidity. They are not fast growers, so I do not know how big your's is, but these are slower than your standard angraecum. I hope this gives you an idea of what you can do, change or leave as is with your's 🤞🏼 Let me know if what I said prompted any further questions that I can possibly help out with 😊 hope your day is going beautifully for you 🫶🏼❤️🌸

Thanks, as always for taking the time to respond. I ended up putting the Sobenkoffiav in a very shallow clay pot that has plenty of aeration provided by gaps in the sides of the pot. Received some horticultural pumice today so I used it for the medium. A plastic saucer holds water so that the plant will never completely dry out. I had potted it in a larger pot earlier in the afternoon, but after reading your response I decided to put it in a shallower pot. Noticed that the roots had already turned dark green. I know that means they are absorbing water. I bought this as a mature plant from a local grower last fall. I assume that it was watered or misted often at the nursery because it was growing in a Vanda basket. I was told at the time to treat it like a Vanda. I only water my Vandas once daily unless it is very hot like our current weather. I am hoping this plant will improve and thrive for me. I'll let you know how it does.

They are somewhat vandaceous, but can only be sustained if the humidity is consistently high, which is what greenhouses can provide. Your set up has the combination of higher humidity which is great, also for the leaves. We focus on the roots a lot, when it comes to humidity, often tend to forget that many orchids need humidity for their leaves as well, to mitigate the rapid transpiration of moisture through the leaves, so... the additional pumice is GREAT! 👍🏼 I would love to hear how things progress, if you have time as and when you see how she does 🥰 thank you!
