SET THE TONE live The Tube 31 12 1982 (best quality)

Музыка

Many bands are referred to as ahead of their time... Scottish Fun / Funksters SET THE TONE were genuinely ahead of their time. It's unfortunate the wider general public was not ready for this explosive electro outfit from Glasgow. Active between 1982 / 1983 they left a legacy of a few singles and one album. On Thursday 23 June 1983 my mate Dean and I made our first visit to Manchester's Hacienda club to see the band play live (promoting their Shiftin Air Affair album) this was to be the first of many Hacienda nights for me and my second live gig ... the first being Yazoo at Manchester's Palace theatre the previous November. The hacienda had been open for 12 months and was struggling, I was 17 years old. On the night SET THE TONE played there were less than 20 people in attendance, despite this the band still gave it their all... I remember Evelyn from the band throwing out a skipping rope and encouraging the guy who caught it to join in the on-stage shenanigans 20 people or not it was fuckin awesome. Check out the 12" b side to Dance Sucker... "Let Loose" it is a proto-house banger, dropped a full 5 years before House music was to change the fortunes of The Hacienda forever.
Line up for this performance
Chris Morgan - Vocal / Guitar
Evelyn Asiedu - Back vocal
Kenny Hyslop - Drums
Kendal Stubbs - Bass Guitar/vocoder
Dave Allan - Bass Synthesizer (Mini Moog)
Synthesizer - Oberheim - Stevie Doyle

STT were my absolute favourite band of this era. I blame myself for their lack of success. If I really like a group, they're doomed to obscurity.

@@rbrtdff I haven't found it out there but it could be. Not sure the exact year but think it was late 80s /a Summer of the World Cup. Not sure of the title. The piece was set to melody of the Chariots of Fire theme and designed to have a massive crowd sing along. Chris & Evelyn are about the most fun people you'll ever meet. The piece required and lots of group singing overdubs simulating a massive crowd. Lots of cider consumed /great fun. The song was not exactly in character of most of the really wild, fast pace, stunt/dance stuff Chris was working on down the hall. If you happen to find it or anymore stuff from them, please give me a heads up.

I saw them on an episode of the Tube in 1982 (not this episode) and was able to buy 2 X 12" (Rap Your Love & Dance Sucker) , a 7" and the album (Shiftin Air Affair) in 83 when on holiday in the UK. For the life of me I cannot understand why they did not get more attention. From what I've seen the Tube gave them slots in 3 episodes so it's not like they didn't get exposure however 2 of those slots were right at the beginning of The Tube so maybe it was just unfortunate timing. My sincere thanks to all members of Set The Tone ....I thought you guys were awesome and I still love your music as IMHO there's nobody who came close to your sound and vibe.

I genuinly believe they were too ahead of their time. It took Basement Jaxx a further 10 years to come up with a similar vibe. I'm working on some videos for tracks from shiftin air affair ... watch this space.

@@electrozaps I was in a three piece synth band called Johnny 7 (named after the Mattel toy gun). We landed a support for Yazoo in Glasgow. Set the Tone needed two keyboard guys, we were spotted there and recruited to do the Tube and Radio 1 session.
