Session 7: Jim Osman - Why Do We Care?

By Jim Osman, Pastor| Nov 19, 2022 | Cessationist Conference
Description: Is the cessation/continuation theology merely an academic exercise? What are the real-world implications of the issues we have discussed? How does continuationist theology affect my view of Scripture? Continuationism undermines the authority of Scripture, the centrality of Scripture, and the sufficiency of Scripture in the life of a believer.
About Speaker: Jim Osman Pastor/Teacher, Kootenai Community Church
Jim Osman was born in May of 1972 and has lived in Sandpoint since he was 3 years old. He achieved his life’s ambition by graduating from Sandpoint High School in 1990. Jim came to know Christ through the ministry of Cocolalla Lake Bible Camp. Kootenai Community Church has always been his home church, attending Sunday school, Vacation Bible School, and Youth Group. After graduating from high school, he attended Millar College of the Bible in Pambrun, Saskatchewan. It was at Bible College that Jim met his wife-to-be, Diedre, who was also enrolled as a student. Jim graduated with a three-year diploma in April of 1993 and married Diedre in August of that same year. He returned to Millar to further his education in September of 1994 and graduated from the Fourth Year Internship Program with a Bachelor of Arts in Strategic Ministries in April of 1995. Jim and Diedre returned to Sandpoint where Jim began working in construction and as a Roofing Materials Application Specialist (roofer) until he was asked to take over as the preaching elder of Kootenai Com-munity Church in December of 1996. Now he counts it as his greatest privilege to be involved in ministering in the church that ministered to him for so many years. It has been a great adventure! Jim is the author of Truth or Territory: A Biblical Approach to Spiritual Warfare, Selling the Stairway to Heaven, The Prosperity of the Wicked: A Study of Psalm 73, and God Doesn’t Whisper. Jim and Diedre have four adult children.

So thankful for Jim Osman’s ministry. ‘God doesn’t whisper’ was massively helpful to me when I was getting out of the hyper Charismatic Movement (in particular the prophetic movement!) Thank you!

Teal shirt guy, great fashion move! I look forward to seeing this film. Let me say as I am learning more about the Bible...my Mom was an adamantly pro tongues. Now I find it strange or ironic that I find myself leaning toward the Cessationist view. Amen, good preaching!

Thank you all for doing this, and making it available to all of us! You have succeeded in equipping the saints to contend earnestly for the faith handed down to us; and encouraging us to be ready to make known the hope we have been given in Christ and His Word.

Such sound teaching and clarification on the gifts. All the speakers have done an excellent job. Just been listed in to Andrew Rappaport on miracles in the Bible: 256 and Jesus did 104 of them. Clearly not an everyday occurrence and neither should we expect them. Surely the greatest miracle the Lord gives us is the gift of repentance and faith. Now, That’s a miracle indeed!

I can say now the proposed film will not put even a dent in the 'Charismatic Movement' If you really think it will, then you all are more deluded than I thought. Yes, some teaching within the charismatic movement needs to be questioned, as it is by a number of channels, but are they taking any notice? No! Spiritual things are 'spiritually discerned' 1 Cor 2.

Most charismatics are not calling said 'revelations' scripture, and many would say that these 'revelations' should be tested by scripture. Right use does not necessarily mean, 'non use'! Yes, Mr Osman it's called the witness of the Holy Spirit. You spent the most part of your book 'God does not whisper' making the point you are making here, but that still does not make it concur with scripture! So by your own argument Mr Osman, you should not have written any of your current books or plan to write any more in the future, as you may be accused of either adding to or taking away from scripture! See how flawed Mr Osman's argument is? So how do you know Mr Osman which missions to give an offering to, chapter and verse please? Hear that at 42 minutes: 'WATCH FOR A BOOK'! More revelation when they keep telling you the bible is enough. This whole session is a contradiction! I'm not saying it is wrong to write 'Christian books', but these folk are saying one thing while promoting another. Cessationism is a false doctrine and is a doctrine of demons!!!

Jude 8. Though their experiences are subjective they interpret and treat them as having the same level of authority as inspired scripture to direct lives and to be obeyed. When they contradict scriptures in the execution of those visions, they negate it's authority or twist meanings - eg. publicly speaking in tongues without an interpretor was forbidden in 1 Corinthians, yet scripture is being ignored in favor of experience; or "binding Satan" when Bible clearly says that won't happen until Jesus does it when Christ begins His millennial reign; women pastors or remarried tattied guys who kick old women in the face to heal them?! Jer 17:9. If Christ were to give gifts of the prophets and apostles to validate men as His spokesmen as He did in the past, surely he would choose very few of these morally corrupt charlitains performing on the stages today - if any. We need objective standards and consistency with revealed scripture, or we will be deceived, lawless, or worse yet become false prophets ourselves - as scripture predicted would occur in the last days. JESUS and living for HIS glory is sufficient for His Bride. Lk 10:10.

@@OscarLeroy-xb1fc You make a valid point about uninterpreted tongues etc and also Todd Bentley. Todd said he 'kicked people', but no other evidence exists to confirm he actually did? This is where the 'gift of discernment' comes in, yes by scripture of course, but even you must admit scripture cannot address all incidents in the 21st century. After all why have teaching concerning the gifts of the Spirit if they are shortly to become obsolete in a few years? Or perhaps someone forgot to inform the Holy Spirit of this fact?

@@GI4JYT Well, when the Antichrist appears he will attest himself to men by "lying" false signs and wonders, sufficient to deceive the whole world into honoring him as Christ?!? - (conttasting all other men's pitiful displays, but counterfeiting Jesus Christ who was attested to men by his miracles) - Therefore, gifts and not testing every spirit will go hand in hand to the very end in the world and church....I believe God Himself may still intervene miraculously at times, but never to share His glory with another or prove them his spokesman - all praise goes vertical never horizontal... ?where are the mobile healing teams, the children's hospitals and cancer wards are still waiting?! approved workman RIGHTLY handle the Word of God, not by SIGNS
