Session 13: Unit Step function examples and how to express a function in terms of unit step function
In this video, we will see what do you mean by Unit Step function at t=0. Then we will see how to rewrite if we translate on the right or left side on t-axis. Then we will see examples to understand the concept.
We will also see how to write a piecewise continuous function in terms of unit step function i.e., we will see how unit step function will help us to write a piecewise continuous function in one line.
At the end we will see how unit step function helps us to translate a function.
In the next session, I will talk on how to find Laplace of a unit step function and then we will see second shifting theorem as well.

Sir, why in today's quiz the ans of that piecewise unit step function is same as Laplace of 1?? If we write the function in unit function representation i.e u(t-(n-1))-u(t-n) it Laplace change for different values of n. is it correct sir??c

Why must we do u(t-a), if we start at a point "a" cant we just define u(t) at that point? Or is it because a unit step function u(t) is universally defined at 0?

But when you change your point a then u(t) might create confusion. Hence as a standard practice we write u(t-a) and we specify what is a

at 10:17 if t >4, for example 5. I'm not getting as the output. 3[(u(3)-u(1)] +9 [(u(-1)-u(-2)] = 3[u(3)] = 3 P.S - found the answer , when we express u(t-2), that means for t >2 the function's output is 1

Answer involves cosine and sine integral functions.. Using laplace of derivative: L{f'}=sL{f} -f(0) we get, L{1/1+t^2}= s L{ tan -1 t} -0 So L of tan inverse t = 1/s * L{1/1+t^2}... @@DrMathaholic sir why U r doing multiplication of 8 with {1- u(t-2)}? Simply 8 should be multiplied with u(t-2) no, like it is done 6*u(t-2) ?? Just like {8*u(t-2)- 6*u(t-2)} This was only my problem sir.

@@kks9502 given question is 8 when 0 For first part, 8( u(t-0) - u(t-2)). For second part , 6 * u(t-2), we don't write infinity part...hence only one unit function here. This is the answer. Also, u(t-0)= u(t) and u(t) is nothing but 1 on interval (0, infinity)

If you express it as 8 * u(t-2) + 6*u(t-2) then for t>2 , u(t-2)=1 so we get 8+6 instead of only 6.
