Serrano Shoots Cuba (Part 3)

Ойын-сауық

Start from the beginning and watch part 1 here: bit.ly/Serrano-1
Andres Serrano has come a long way since submerging a crucifix in his own urine. We followed the controversial artist around Cuba as he created a new body of work, photographing the country's influential figures, political leaders, the poor, the rich, and the dead.

Loved the 3-part series! Great insight especially on process. He is very careful in respecting the community and not stepping on anyone's toes which is so important coming into a different country. Some of his portraits where kinda meh like corporate headshots. Some were stunning though. Please create a new series just on following photographers Vice!! :)

Watching this is double sided for me as a 1st generation American from Cuban people. My family came here when Castro took over and i was the first born here. I would love to go there and see what my roots are for myself as well as to go with all the memories i have from the stories my grandparents told me. Maybe one day i can go there.

Great series and Photographer....confused by one thing anybody else catch that the RZ with a Polaroid back produces a cropped image and the images Serrano shows as his test shots are full bleed on the polaroids? Didnt see a Landcamera or PressCamera anywhere in the piece am i missing something ? check out 7:40 - See

Last summer was the 500 anniversary of the Cuban city my mother was born in, Sancti Spiritus, and I was invited by the Cuban Government to exhibit my work in one of the major museums of that city. Unfortunately some issues arouse with Visa law changes 6 days before the trip and I was unable to travel as an artist (which is necessary to have any work exhibited legally, as a foreigner), after an entire year of planning. I'm heading to medschool this fall so I'm not sure when I'll have another chance to exhibit, but since I was born there and have a lot of family in Cuba I will be returning in the future, and hopefully I'll return again as an artist. To bad I probably won't be the youngest foreign artist to exhibit in Cuba when I get the next chance.

Iron Toledo If you're not a US citizen, visiting Cuba isn't a problem at all. It's the US government banning US citizens from visiting Cuba. There are ways to get around the tarvel ban though. I have friends who went there through Canada. Cuban normally doesn't stamp American passports, so when you come back the US Customs wouldn't know.

  • @albert1949

Well because of the US Cuba is how it is. Meaning Cuba is Anti US because US is anti Cuba and so the issue dates back to the Kennedy blockade days.
