SERIOUSLY?! - IxDF UX Course Review by a Senior Designer

Hey friends! Many people wanted an IxDF UX Course review, so here's one for you! I went through the first lesson from "Become a ux designer from scratch" course and compared it to the Google Foundations UX Course I took a few months ago. Interaction Design Foundation is quite popular, so I decided to look at their course next. And boy what did I find...
I looked at the platform itself and the UX of it, the UI examples, how is the course structured, how is the knowledge presented and so on.

    Hi Michal, we really appreciate the thoroughness and attention-to-detail you have paid, and our design, video and editorial team pass on their thanks to you because the points you raised are very insightful. 🙏 The good news is that we’re actually already fixing about 95% of the issues you raised. We’re rolling out new visual styles, shorter, more engaging videos, a complete revamp of outdated images and references and a lot more practical projects to help people build their portfolios as they go through a course. 💪 The course you reviewed is a foundational one-we avoid teaching about apps, sites or technologies in these, but students can move on to our more specialised courses to learn all about these. This course is even currently undergoing a revamp; this is something we do for all of our courses periodically. Our Design Thinking course was recently updated, and our HCI course is currently being redone too! We’re a small team trying to reach and teach over 100,000 students; that means it takes us a bit longer to chip away at key improvements like these. The reason we’re a small team is that we try to keep our admin costs low so that we can make design education more affordable at the lowest possible prices-that’s our mission. 😊 Since you’d mentioned you’d prefer to take more practical courses, we’d love to suggest some of our recent courses to give you a better sense of what we offer. If you’re looking to check out something light and practical, there’s a Creativity course that’s a lot of fun: www.interaction-design.org/courses/creativity-methods-to-design-better-products-and-services 🎨 If you’re looking for something more UX skill-oriented, we recommend our Quantitative research course, Data-Driven Design: www.interaction-design.org/courses/data-driven-design-quantitative-research-for-ux You also mentioned the absence of Agile in our content-well, we have a course dedicated to Design For Agile coming up in Q1 2022 which is by Laura Klein! As for featuring more practicing designers in our courses, all our upcoming 5+ courses are created with and by senior, practicing design professionals on topics from Journey Mapping to Visual Design. ✨We’d love the opportunity to give you a “behind-the-scenes” tour of our process and philosophy here at IxDF. You could even meet some people involved in creating our courses, and help us improve the content to serve the needs of what UX recruiters want to see. We'd of course be happy to give you access to any course you'd like to audit. And if you’d like to do a Master Class webinar with us, we welcome the chance to showcase your perspective to our worldwide student community! If you’re open to it, do drop us an email at hello@interaction-design.org P.S. If you spot anything else we could fix or improve, please let us know and we’ll get right on it. We appreciate your feedback and your time! 💙

    Thanks guys! This response brings hope in humanity back :) My goal with the video was to share my first impressions, especially as I completed the Google Course and many people have asked me to compare those super-beginner ones. The fact that you're improving is what I hoped to hear, as I see the vast knowledge on your platform, and I believe with more engaging delivery it can help even more people achieve their dreams :) Let's definitely do something together! ❤️

    Outdated visuals and references? Yes. Verbose? It depends on the course. Some actually have a great rhythm. Text-heavy? Yes, but the reading is quite good in places. I've slogged through several modules to find it totally worth it in the end. It's more theoretical, and you have to be up for that. I've kept my subscription active because the content is gold if you're patient with it. I get that it's not for everybody. Maybe I enjoy it more because I'm an experienced UX designer. (I love your courses, too!) I don't want everyone's courses to have the same easy-to-consume format. I don't want shortcuts to learning. I want the challenge of different formats. Diversity is a good thing. I want to think deep thoughts, not just push pixels. I don't think it's smart to try to get all of your learning from one place. Find different sources, and embrace the differences. Take what you want and leave the rest. It's all good :-)

    I absolutely confirm this review of IDF platform. I had a subscription for one year and just managed to finish two courses in it and start the third one. Lessons are very abstract with terms and full of demagogy with lack of good examples, that I was left annoyed and discouraged to continue my UX career path. I hope IDF will improve and wish them the best, but their current product is inadequate.

    I heard some people say it's helpful to learn human computer interaction (HCI) as an aspiring UX designer. What is your stance on this? I am currently looking at online HCI courses (specifically HCI by georgia tech on udacity). Should I enroll in this course, or is it better to spend that time to make more projects and case studies for my portfolio?

  • @MalewiczHype

    @MalewiczHype

    2 жыл бұрын

    That depends on your goal - it's always good to learn new things, but it's the portfolio what gets you the job in the end. I'd go with some general, foundational UX course first, then HCI but only if it's been uploaded less than 3 years ago, if it's older and not updated I'd stay away. Still - portfolio is king!

    This video made me wonder about the importance of having a UX portfolio. I've been at my current company for 2 years and have done a lot of impressive projects, but probably can't include them in a portfolio because of NDA's. I guess portfolios are nescessary only for landing your first UX job? If I want to apply for a regular or a senior position in another company, they will probably focus on my job experience and interviews/recruitment tasks, right? What do you guys think?

    IDF has a whole course on design thinking. And separate courses for creating a portfolio. (I'm yet to do the course you just reviewed) Agree with many of the points you mentioned. Yes, it is boring but I found it assuring that a real person marks my answers not another beginner like me. I'm doing the design thinking course, they have an optional exercise to design an app and they provide all the material and stuff. And another thing, (this I guess more of a very personal biased point) I found knowing those techniques is worth it(Some I feel outdated but no clear idea). Because here in my country, we don't have any UX or UI learning resources. In my perspective, I feel better coz they provided all the interview guides for me to get started. That self-promoting questions, 100% 💯 agreeing with you on that. Have it in every lesson. I felt it is kind of a free pass coz as I approach the end of the course for my level questions got tougher. And I was about to lose the pass mark. (those self-promoting questions easily added about 20 points. Which can be bad.....). Honestly starting IDF felt like a scam but after putting hard work into it I feel better. With forums and groups provided inside IDF. It is super affordable than other courses with instructor marking.

    This is a great comment! Thank you. I beliece there's knowledge there, my main problem is really with how it's presented and structured. And I bet the exercises will get progressively more hands-on - I'm hoping on it. This videos is more about my first impressions with the entry-level course, not a bash on all of IDF :) If you're getting a lot out of it, then by all means continue, as this is what it's all about :)

    Great review of this IDF course! I'm currently taking this course right now & agree with the pros and cons. I do find that there is quite a bit of reading and no interactive exercises for students. I do believe it's a great course, just needs a 2021 overhaul. I wish every other section didn't speak about the certificate. I believe it's unnecessary. Since you have addressed the outdated examples of Low & high prototypes, I have replaced those examples in my notes. The examples are updated to the year 2021 with additional information. Btw: Would you be able to review The Design for the 21st Century by Don Norman? It's a new IDF Course. It launched nearly 3 weeks ago.

I'm on their newsletter, and one time they sent a survey about UX. I couldn't complete this survey because the UX was so bad that it didn't let me! I emailed them to let them know that their survey is not user-friendly... After a few weeks, I received the answer; they asked me to describe exactly where I saw the UX issues, but the main thing was that the form in many places was unlickable - basics... Not the best impression at all :/

I took many courses, and they're all just as you explain: - too many questions where you answer how cool they are (in one course is ok, but they are at the beginning of EACH) - some "correct" answers are doubtfully true ;s like this question can be discussed and can have different answers. - can't finish course fast, many materials are so outdated that it's embarrassing, - boring, truly. Waiting waiting too much waiting.. - constant manipulation, forcing you to think that IDF is great. Which I find very irritating. And this is 2022 ( i believe it was 2017 when I joined IDF for a year) If you're gonna teach online, at least let others see your content whenever they can. I also have told them the things I have found most annoying but of course I didn't get any answer or a rather an egotistical one, because I'm just a nobody. 🤣🤷🏻 I bought a whole year and let me tell you, feeling ignored and unmotivated just stopped me from caring and i just gave my money away. Thanks! I really hoped it would be better than it was. I know they have a lot of knowledge, but the delivery of that knowledge ... well that's a whole other thing.

    You need to learn English to become a UX designer because a good user experience depends on how well a design communicates with the user. If the language used in the design is hard to understand then it is not a good user experience. Study English first, become very good at this language and then you will be able to start your journey to become a great UX designer. You can do this! Good luck.
