you do realize that the repair was mediocre at best and downright dangerous at worse. When the actual chassis and suspension is damaged in a crash that car should not be driving especially since all he did was weld an extension onto the original chassis without replacing the whole rear drivetrain and suspension. And more about those extensions he welded on, if the weld points rusted the whole rear would practically fall off or would become loose. If the car got in a crash again it's more than likely that the rear would snap off taking the bumper and trunk off with it. So yeah pretty dangerous

If you have the knowledge to evaluate a crashed car you can still safely purchase cars with minor accidents. Minor means no frame damage so the structural integrity is not compromised. For cars that unfortunately had structural damage(the one in video is SERIOUSLY damaged), it’s impossible to restore original crash worthiness, but they are priced accordingly as well. Depends on the buyer’s circumstances they’re still safer than motorcycles.

Great repair and fascinating to watch, I used to do work like this in the early 80's. The problem for the near future will be rust. After welding, in the original manufacturing process cars are dipped to get a seal inside all the hidden box sections at the backside of welds where the metal has been oxidised. This repair has rust pre-built into many structural areas and won't last long.

And certainly not down to a quarter of an inch or less. That’s why when a car is made at the factory the frame rails are put in jigs and are lined up perfectly with crossmembers and then everything is spot welded while in this jig. When the frame is released from the jig, measurements can be taken crisscross from one side to the other and the measurements should be identical.Kind of like when a carpenter measures a door for square, if the frame is not square the door is not going to line up and close right.

Repairing by going back to the very component and method of assembly from factory not only maintains the safety of the original factory safety standards but also keeps jobs and saves the environment by reducing pollutions, minimising energy used to manufacture new products/ transporting it and to recycle the waste. Throw away and laws preventing repairs (totalling/write off etc) is to increase profits.

Yes I agree he does amazing work fixing these mangled cars. But I wonder if that’s safe ? in the USA a car like that would be declared total loss and I wonder if doing all that work labor and parts exceed the value of the car ?

The repair you see is pretty much a optical one, and cant be compared to how it really should be repaired or simple put as a total loss. The frame obviously took a dent, and i bet there has'nt bin any analysis other then the back of the car. It wont perform as intended in a second chrash; aluminium frame has just bin stretched out to it's original form and thats it. Simular as chrashing a can the first time. It's difficult. Now put the chrused can back together as much as you can, and chrush it again. You'll see the 2nd time its alot more easier. Thats pretty much what this car is all about.

@@Jeroensgambling I guess they have different laws and DOT regulations in those countries . But yea if the chassis is bent or mangled it won’t perform the safety as when original from factory.

@@xavilopez4716 So from i understood from USA is that some written off cars are simply put to states where they have low regulation and being brought back into the market. Same as "water flooded" cars. We see it in europe too; it's a mass scale scam really, buy chrashed / written off cars, apply a repair and re-sell for market value with profits obviously. Next buyer woud'nt even know the history of the car. its not a joke to drive around in a chrashed car. Ive bought a merc cabrio one day; looked OK and it did had warranty. Once i had it and attempted to install a subwoofer i realised the car had bin in 3 different accidents, front, side, rear, with all poorly done repair jobs. Now the part where you and your passenger normally put your foot down, was absolutely rusted up and standing on it just crushed with your foot going straight through it. How on earth did that pass through MOT here in Portugal. For a price class of around 12.000 euro you expect something decent but that price was only based for being a "mercedes". Lol. I gave the dealership the worst of the worst and traded in the car. This is so utterly dangerous.

One can't help but be impressed with his skill set, especially given his age. That said, I take a dim view (no pun intended) of the long term damage he can be doing to his face and particularly his eyes (retinal damage) by M.I.G. welding without a hood.

I've known exhaust shop workers that weld 8-10 hours a day 5-6 days a week for years with no protection and no known problems. That said I weld on occasion and will absolutely not make so much as a tac weld without my mask on with safety glasses underneath to protect from sparks. Its just not worth the risk.
