For context, Shipman was a doctor who could just slip elderly patients a 'little something extra' into their hospital medicine and go "Oops, natural causes!". He basically played the serial killer game on easy mode.

Shipman was a GP. He was getting away with it for years by targeting his elderly patients, he'd get little old Women to leave money and things to him in their wills. When they died because they were mostly old he would put down natural causes so no one hardly looked into it, some relatives of the dead caught on and some doctors suspected something but the cops were just like they were old. Old people die of natural causes all the time. When he was finally caught it turned out he'd been robbing them on house visits as well as through their wills. He stole things like jewellery he gave to his Wife, money he could find etc and he was using all the money he got from killing them to seem like a lovely guy by taking his family on holidays, buying them nice things and that sort of stuff. (It shows you can't even trust your family doctor)

Another British Doctor was John Bodkin Adams. He also had a suspicious number of elderly patients die, and was a beneficiary in 130 wills. He was tried for one specific murder in 1957, and acquitted on account of insufficient evidence (the supposed victim was over eighty, had died some years previously, and had been cremated). There was speculation at the time that had Adams been tried for a different murder, or multiple murders, a conviction could've been secured. A second murder trial was planned, but the prosecution withdrew the charge for reasons that were never clear (though some have suggested that no-one wanted people to stop trusting doctors). Adams was later convicted of fraud, falsification of death records, and failure to keep proper records of dangerous drugs. He died in 1983. Was he a killer? Probably. Was he a murderer? Opinions differ. The law has always turned a blind eye to doctors who have administered large amounts of morphine to terminally ill patients, even when that morphine hastened their end. It's possible that he thought he was being merciful, then became obsessive. How many did he kill? Impossible to say - but probably more than a hundred.

My ex-friend's father was Harold Shipman's classmate during their time at school. I wasnt sure about it until their whole family proved otherwise. It was quite shocking to hear, I dont think his father knew that his classmate was a mass murderer.

Gary Lamont Ridgeway (aka "The Green River Killer") was not caught until 2001. I know, because I met him in 1992 in Oregon. I didn't know the man who identified himself only as "Gary" was actually the Green River Killer until after he was caught years later and I saw his picture during his trial. I'm lucky to be alive. He went back to Washington state (where he was eventually arrested) and killed at least a dozen other people over the next 9 years. But up to that point, no one knew who he was or what he looked like.

@@mikemooseman5354They can't be accurate. I'm pretty sure Ted Bundy was not killing people as an infant ( he was born in November 1946) and he was electrocuted in 1989 so he hadn't killed anyone in a while. I think since some are like a year or two, those are accurate but some are clearly not.

Something interesting. Seems like most serial killers are psychopathic versus the less calculated sociopathic or secondary psychopath. Most of these serial killers look like average joes, thats the thing, they’re intelligent and calculated enough to think big picture. its part of their disguise so you never see it coming where as a sociopath is the tatted up loud bar fighter. While sociopath and psychopath are not necessarily DSM-V terms, I feel there is a true true difference one being genetic and the other being environmentally made.

Its actually a good thing believe it or not. The USA was one of or the first to come up with the term of serial killers and knew they were out there. The USSR at the time refused to believe in such a thing as well as its satellite countries claiming that Serial Killers was an American phenomenon only and that doesnt happen anywhere else, thus leaving to many killers being free to kill. Notice how the numbers that are really high are outside of the USA. However thanks to the idea of profiling that was created still recently, by relative time, many in the USA have been caught.

That's not what a serial killer is. You can always Google the definition of serial killer if you're that confused. Guess the caveman that came up with fire is responsible for all the fossil fuels we burn. 450 people a year are killed by hammers. Does that make tool manufacturers serial killers? Of course it doesn't.

Technically they don't count since they only gave orders and had their underlings do their dirty work. But I agree, those are muderers in a differemt form. But the killers on this list were pretty much independent, usually in civilian territory, and did everything with their own hands.
