Cleverly got obliterated in his home town. That's how you win a world title.

One of Kovalev's very best performances in my opinion. Cleverly is very sturdy and Kovalev just annihilated him like he was nothing. I think that Kovalev would've done the same to Ward too.

Ward forced kovalev to wear huge gloves. If kovalev was wearing the same tiny gloves that ward was wearing, ward would've been knocked out

Everybody knows your punches are more effective when the gloves are smaller and less effective when the gloves are bigger. Ask any boxer!

Terrible tactics from Cleverly team but if you listen to Cleverly's corner that's to be expected. Shouting "C'mon!" at your boxer isn't coaching, especially after they've just been dropped twice. His corner (which included his dad!!) should've stopped the fight after the 3rd round. Crazy. Cleverly and his team were found out in this fight. You can only dine out on guys like Tommy Karpency (who worked as a male nurse as a day job when he fought Cleverly) for so long. By the time this fight came around it was time to pay the piper. Still a great performance from Kovalev. So relaxed and focused.

I find it unbelievable that Roy Jones Jnr couldn't recognise Kovalev was intentionally throwing uncommitted punches in that 3rd round, to create openings for his power shots!

Indeed sir. As you well know there's levels to this, another good example of not using you're face as defence is the James Toney V Prince Charles Williams fight. One of my all time favourites!

The referee screwed up twice in the 2nd round. At 11:59, cleverly voluntarily takes a knee. As he's going down, Kovalev hit him with a right. It was just before his knee touched so it was a legal punch. After his knee was definitely down,... however,..... Kovalev landed a hard left and a hard right to Cleverly's head. The referee said nothing, the announcers said nothing. Then, with a few seconds left in that round, the referee raised his arms over his head and waved them. that is the signal that the fight is over. he got between them, also indicating that he wanted to stop the fight. the problem is, when he began raising his arms , there was about 1 and 1/2 seconds left in the round. as he pulled them apart, the bell rang but his actions were an attempt to stop the fight because Cleverly was hurt. When he intervened, the bell rang so he instinctively changed his call. He did that because if he had known the bell was going to ring in less than 2 seconds, he would have allowed Cleverly to stay in the fight so he could recover bertwee get a rest between rounds. I can't believe that commentator Roy Jones Jr didn't notice that Kovalev hit cleverly twice while he was down. jones lost the first fight of his career by disqualification, when he hit Montell Griffin when he went down to a knee voluntarily. It was nearly an identical situation to what occurred here.

i think cleverly wasn't fighting cleverly he should have been less aggressive. fighting on the retreat and jabbing constantly going backwards until mid to late rounds when kovalev tires out. to trade with a much more skilled, stronger, and harder puncher wasn't good.

Always a gamble to engage with a banger, to try to wear him out. As Jones Jr said...Can you run the gauntlet of Cannons from this beast in the early rounds? It's a tall order! Only elite dudes can beat Kovalev.

@@TM-vg9pz when boxers never meet due to being from different eras (although only slightly, in this case) I suppose you have to imagine them both fighting each other in their prime. Unlike reality, where boxers meet in different stages of their career, Kovalev in his prime, would have been Calzaghe's biggest challenge of his.
