Maybe I'm wrong, but, somehow, I can't imagine the politburo feeling comfortable with this. There's an "off the wall", sometimes tongue-in-cheek, quality to Prokofiev's scoring that doesn't quite have a heroic, "socialist realist" sound. Whatever the case, it is a marvellous piece of music....

I really find these late Soviet works Prokofiev wrote after he came back to the USSR very enjoyable to listen to. They feel as if he were writing everything quickly, and knew that he didn't have much time left to get them all down. Also, I believe, he had to write many of these works for financial reasons, or obligations to the state, for which he was remunerated.
