The first and third movements originated in 1925 as intended additional movements for the 1924 chamber ballet, Trapeze (the six published movements of that ballet comprising the Quintet Op. 39.)
I. Moderato, molto ritmato 'Divertissement' 00:00-04:10
II. Larghetto (non troppo lento) 'Nocturne' 04:10-07:50
III. Allegro energico 'Dance' 07:50-11:30
IV. Allegro non troppo e pesante 'Epilogue' 11:30-15:15

Inventive (wittily so), melodic (unpredictably so) and brilliantly orchestrated. 15 minutes of musical pleasure. I particularly love the way the Epilogue seems to range widely in such a short amount of time. Another winner of a performance from Jarvi........

Prokofiev was a genius and proved that he could write in any musical genre. I'm amazed at the assortment of his works from the most fantastic piano sonatas ever written to opera, ballet, film music, incidental music for plays, cello concertos, piano concertos, violin concerto, string quartets, vocal works/cantatas, amazing and underrated symphonies (the 4th of 1946, and 7th), and he did it all with such originality and melodic flare at at a time when music was moving into a trap of serialism.
