Sequential Prophet Comparison: New Vs Vintage

After Sequential released its Rev 3 update on the beloved Prophet-5 synthesizer line, some synthesizer purists couldn’t help but notice the subtle changes to the characteristic sonic flavor imparted by the Curtis analog VCOs and filters used on the Rev 3. To appease enthusiasts of all stripes, Sequential recently released its Rev 4 update to its flagship keyboard synth line, featuring Curtis 3340 VCOs as its analog core, plus Rossum-designed filters like the ones found in Rev 1 and Rev 2, as well as the same filters included in the Rev 3-effectively making Rev 4 into all previous versions of the Prophet-10 in one box, designed to let modern users access all the sonic quirks of previous iterations!
Mike Borish of Borish Electronics joins Roland Chira at Chicago Synth Exchange to help you hear for yourself some of these subtle, yet discernible, differences by comparing a pre-owned Prophet-5 Rev 3 with a new Sequential Prophet-10 Rev 4-the latter of which essentially stacks two Prophet-5 synths in one box for 10 voices of polyphony! The P5 rev 4 is the best example of the Prophet-5. It has things that the originals never had: poly unison, poly glide, MIDI, Velocity, Aftertouch, Fatar keybed, both filters, stacking, splits.
I love knob turners. The best analog synth bar none. Thanks guys. I wish i had one.

@3:27 if you can't hear the very evident difference in tone there, either you need better speakers, or you need to have your hearing examined. The REV3 is bright and the REV4 is dull.

While I do think the REV3 sounds a tad better I'd rather have the REV4 for its reliability and flexibility in today's world. I bought a REV4 on release as I'd been wanting a Prophet 5 since 1986 when I saw one in a local music store. My Prophet 5 is now 10 voices and I love it.
Rev 3 just sounds better overall and I don't see anymore sound design possibilities with the 4 so I'd always go for the sound and use good external fx to create original sounds. I guess theres a reason older Prophets command a higher price.

I don’t think the difference worth the amount of money. Most of the time rev 3 doesn’t sound better but different, and even in some scenarios rev 4 sounds better if you check other comparisons. The difference is not that relevant I would say, and if you are a good sound designer you can make some sounds even better than what you see in several demos out there. I own a rev 4 and I can say this comparison doesn’t really show up how great the synth is, and I am pretty sure it wouldn’t be that easy to try to replicate the other way around (I imagine these comparisons may try to replicate what rev 3 does instead of focusing on what rev 4 can do great).
the sound on Rev3 is more open, more punch on low and mid it's clearly audible i've got the Rev4, and it is more straight and more civilized, it's sure

I somehow thought the prophet on top was the original, so I gotta say, I thought the revision had more character in some cases.
