Sequential Prophet 5/10: a Musical Exploration

Музыка

A musical exploration of sounds and timbres on this classic analog synth using custom-created patches. All the sounds you hear in this video were created by me on the Prophet 10 and include brasses, pads, keys, bass, poly synth, sines, chimes, strings and FX.
I wanted to retain the raw sound, so in the making of this video no chorus, modulation or thickening effects were used (software or hardware). Note that the Prophet 5/10 has no internal effects. The only effects used were reverb (mainly the Valhalla Vintage Verb plugin) or delay (Logic native delay plugin). No EQ was used to enhance either the low end or the high end.
The Prophet 5/10 has a single mono audio output, so to create a stereo image I used old-school layering in my DAW. When I recorded each audio take, I also captured MIDI data and used this to record new tracks of the original take. Using the Vintage knob on the Prophet set at 3 means that each MIDI take has subtle differences in pitch, envelopes and filter. Panning and slight detuning of the tracks creates, to my ears, a nice rich stereo image and retains the character of the sound.
*If you own a Prophet 5 rev 4 or Prophet 10, all the sounds featured in this video are now available to purchase as part of the Synth Universe Prophet 5/10 rev 4 Sound bank. Follow the link below where you can also watch video demos of all 80 patches.

    Yeah, and a lot of this can be attributed to the dual layering with slight variation in the vintage tolerances. Kudos to the author for taking the time to do this.

  • @synthuniverse

    12 күн бұрын

    Thanks for the feedback! Yes all of these patches will sound the same - only with 5 note polyphony of course. Just bear in mind that any patches that use unison (such as Octave release) will be monophonic on the P5, as it doesn't have the polyphonic unison. Hope that helps and be sure to check out the sound bank videos linked in description if you're interested.

I still have questions though over the quality of the components and long-term durability of his synths - as well as the core sound. Although the Prophet is expensive, it's very well made and feels like it will last a lifetime. Worth saving up for in my view.

  • @synthuniverse

    @synthuniverse

    2 ай бұрын

    Thanks for the feedback. The Prophet and Hydra are of course very different beasts. For sheer breadth of sound design the Hydra is best as it can do V/A, FM, and wavetable with modular synthesis levels of modulation. The Prophet has a more limited palette, but the analog quality and character of its sounds are arguably unrivalled and when layered and used with external FX it can still create amazing soundscapes - it just takes more effort. Good luck with your search

  • @synthuniverse

    Later in the video and in the description I summarise how I do it. If you use a DAW then you can run the Prophet through a stereo reverb or other stereo plugin which will convert mono to stereo. But for recording I would always use layering and panning separate tracks as it sounds much richer. Good luck with it!

    I have a novation summit. Should i get the prophet 10 module and control it with that or do you recommend buying the prophet with the keybed?

  • @synthuniverse

    @synthuniverse

    3 ай бұрын

    I guess it comes down to space and money. if you have both then I would buy the keyboard version - it's a thing of beauty and well constructed with a nice keybed. But to save space and money I would buy the module to get the same sounds. Another consideration, is that with the P5/10 keyboard version, you don't get any additional performance controls (ribbon or buttons), just pitch and mod wheels, so you could use your Summit fine to control the module.

    I had used Repro-5 for years until I decided to get the real thing. Repro-5 sounds really good and is a bit more versatile, but *nothing* compares to the basic sound of a Prophet-5/10. It sounds like it looks: a bit archaic but also natural. You seem to literally hear all that wood.
