September 11, 2001-WFAN, Pt 1 (Don Imus)

I know a lot have asked for this, so here is the first of six parts of WFAN coverage of the fateful, tragic day of September 11, 2001 starting with the breaking news during the Don Imus morning program. Imus would stay on the air for the next several hours before handing it off to Mike Francesa (Chris Russo was presumably off that week). WFAN benefited from having the eyewitness observations of Warner Wolf, who lived several blocks from the WTC and could report on what he was seeing. Their chief drawback was that they still had to run commercials at various points, the only station I know of that was still doing so that day. There are occasional dips into TV audio coverage from NBC, MSNBC (which as you will hear, Imus frequently rips) and WCBS. Additional parts of coverage will follow over time.

I was listening to this while sitting on the West Side Highway just after the Boat Basin.. I was supposed to be at the NY Stock Exchange store by 9am, and was stuck in traffic. I'll never forget this day. I've made it a ritual to listen to this every year since it was produced. Thank you to all the first responders who gave their all for America.

I thought it must have been a small plane, then, 2 minutes later, I drove on Rt. 80 over the Hackensack River bridge and had a clear view to lower Manhatten and the towers and saw the first tower smoke just pouring out...sad day, something I'll never forget...especially listening to this 19 and 1/2 years later.

Still shocks me how they continued to play commercials and comedy bits on Imus so long after the first tower was hit. The moronic traffic report at 29:01 is jaw dropping. "45 minutes at the inbound Lincoln" while the towers were burning and people were jumping is insane. Warner Wolf was great on this day but the rest of the Imus show fell far short by simply playing commercials and simulcasting TV networks.

@@will89687 Totally different time and situation. In '63, CBS in New York was getting information via teletype from Dallas. The technology was antiquated and communications from 1500 miles away were slow. And it was TV. On 9/11, this example here is radio, they were two miles away and watching on TV while in the studio. At that point in NYC that morning, only WFAN was still doing program matter and running commercials. The Imus show then was overloaded with spots and they didn't want to give back the money unless they absolutely had to. In retrospect a horrible decision and that traffic reporter comes off as both clueless and heartless. We knew then people were jumping from the buildings and she's giving wait times at tunnels that were already closed at that point.
