@@azo0ownz I have the Superlux HD681, the Phillips SHP9500 and the comfort of the HD599SE is unmatched, at least for my head, I can wear them all day. But if they are not on sale I wouldn't pay 200E for them (their current price)

I got mine for €82 when they came out, in fact I just recently replaced the earpads. With one of those cheap 7-band EQ amps to compensate for their minor quirks they really shine. I like to lower down the upper bass a bit and increase the high end to make them brighter.

enjoy your detail analysis and review of all these monitor headphones , it would be interesting to see your review upon less popular and lesser known models from the various other audio brands other than the typical Senn, Beyer or so , say Koss PRO4s , Yamaha HPH-MT5/8 , or esoteric one like the Roland(s)

hi Todd. Due to your advise, I purchased and I am using the Beyerdynamic DT 900 Pro X the last 2 years. They are permanently on the Focusrite Scarlett Solo. I use it both for online classes. Cause I have also a mic on. But I use it almost everyday for playing bass. Well, not everyday, but whenever I steal free time from work. 😄 Do you have in mind any upgrade, any other pair of headphones, that could level up my setup ? Or maybe do you find it necessary to upgrade the Scarlett Solo, in order for better headphones to be supported ? PS I live in a very quiet neighborhood, and I like using open back headphones

  • @askdrtk

The 900 Pro X are very well suited to your use case and imo one of the best open-back options for bass guitar. I would say the headphone amp in the Solo is (considerably) holding back the performance you can get out of the 900s. Even though the Solo can drive the 900s to a reasonable listening level, it lack the current / dynamic range that will really level up what the headphones can deliver. Upgrade options would either be a dedicated headphone amplifier (DAC) or to upgrade the Solo to an interface with a superior headphone amp built-in. If you like the simplicity of the Solo setup and don't foresee needing more IO, I highly recommend the Audient ID4 MKii as it has an excellent headphone amplifier that will handle a wide range of headphones (impedance and sensitivity ranges). It also has an excellent mic preamp, j-fet instrument input, and great converters. If you think you may want something with more expandability, let me know and I will share a few other recommendations. Cheers!

@@askdrtk I will not need more plugs than what I already use. 1 mic, the bass plug and the headphones. But you are right, I am not so satisfied from the performance of the Solo. Is Audient ID4 MKii a replacement for the Solo or it is supposed to be plugged in line (one after another) ?

  • @Kats072307

@k looks like it's a better audio interface than the Focusrite Solo with the same port options. kzread.info/dash/bejne/qWd9rKyre5a4dJs.html This is the best option for me, cause I like to have a minimal desk setup PS It is ordered and it will soon be tested 👍

Great to hear! The ID4 should be a seamless replacement for your Solo with a significant performance upgrade. BTW, Audient uses the same preamps in the ID4 that are used in their large format consoles. Looking forward to your update once you get it setup!

I am torned between this and m40x. Both are under 100$. My main usage will be playing guitar through an amp and listening to music. What would you think the best choice? TIA. ❤❤

  • @residentzero

The main difference is hd599 is open back so sound leaks but the soundstage is amazing. These are also one of the most comfortable headphones ever. The m40x are closed back so more private, but sound is more intimate, in your face. And are very tight clamp, extremely uncomfortable

I've heard that around the 150$ range, good options for open back and good bass are the Fidelio X2HR or the Hifiman HE400SE with the custom grill upgrade "Super Grills" from Custom Cans
