I use ist - absolutely great ! Only a minor downside: with the fur, the dead cat on, you have problems with your fingers to reach the on off button and you do not see the green light and then I forget to swith it off after use.

how much self noise does this thing have? Also do you need a shock mount for it or can you mount it on camera without it picking up the sounds from operating the camera? My zoom h1n can't be used without a shock mount or it hears every little sound from camera horrible.

The self noise specification is dependent on the gain setting; low/medium/high is 16/21/40 dB (A-weighted). The mic capsules are internally suspended and shockmounted to reduce handling noise, but it’s entirely possible for any on camera microphone to pick up the sound of a noisy autofocus lens. There’s also a 1/4-20 mount option that’s built into the cold shoe if you want to move the mic closer to your sound source for better signal to noise, and to get away from any noise from the camera. The internal shock mount is quite effective from isolating the mic from handling noise and these mini shotgun capsules would be a significant improvement over the H1N.

@@wcsdiaries here’s a photo of the 1/4-20 mount that I found in an image search - you can use a camera tripod or lighting stand and just mount the mic right to it. Is it possible to connect this microphone to a smartphone and use it to its full potential?

Hi Sebastian - to the best of my knowledge, there isn't a way to connect a stereo signal into a smartphone using some of the more typical, inexpensive adapters (i.e. Apple Lightning Headphone adapter or USB-C headphone adapter) since they are designed for mono microphones and a stereo headphone signal via TRRS wiring... but there are interfaces available that would allow you to do this, albeit a bit bulkier.

Good review, but cutting to the moving side view shot is totally unnecessary and you lose eye contact with the viewer… not sure if you are trying to impress someone that you have a two camera setup with a slider…. But it would have been better if you stayed with the front view and perhaps punch in for a closeup. And the side view with sliding partway into a dark post is not good…. Just trying to give you some constructive comments….taken from a long time professional videographer….. regards…. Ron
